Conan returns to the Hyborian kingdoms, where he serves as a mercenary in Nemedia, Ophir, and finally Argos.  In Argos, a slight misunderstanding with the law impels him to tak the first ship outward bound.  He joins forces with the pirate Bêlit and her crew of black pirates.  He becouse the scourge of the Black Coast, preying upon Stygian and Shemite traders and gains the name "Amra."

Combat
Conan's fighting style has gained his well known deadliness at this period of time.  His combat reflexes give him quite the advantage in mass battles, with up to four attacks of opportunity as soldiers pass through his threat zone.  His Great Cleave skill allows him to further wade through lesser warriors, crushing them left and right.

Rage: Once per day, Conan can go into a rage and   increase his Strength and Constitution by +4, and gains a +2 morale bonus  to Will saves.  He suffers a -2 penalty to AC.

Fast movement: Conan's speed is increased by +10 feet when wearing no armor, light armor, and shields.

Sneak Attack: Canan strikes a vital spot for extra damage  whenever he catches an opponent flat footed or when he flanks an  opponent.

Evasion: If exposed to an effect that allows a Reflex save  for half damage Conan takes no damage if that save is successful.

Uncanny Dodge: Conan retains his dexterity bonus to his AC even when caught flatfooted or surprised.  He can sense danger before it even becomes apparent.

Note:  As a member of a crew of barbarians, I moved Conan up a level in Barbarian.  It seemed most appropriate.  Away from civilization, I felt that choice made the most sense.  I gave him the Mounted Archery feat as a reward for having spent so much time in the Turanian army.  He should have had that feat earlier, but I was constrained by the rules just a tad bit..

Robert E. Howard's story, "Queen of the Black Coast," was first published in Weird Tales in May of 1934.  The story can also be found in the Ace/Lancer paperback "Conan of Cimmeria"; the Donald M. Grant Limited Edition "Queen of the Black Coast", and the Gnome Press collection "The Coming of Conan".  All of these are out of print, but usually available on eBay.

Currently in print is the British volume "The Conan Chronicles Volume I : The People of the Black Circle" which is part of Millennium's "Fantasy Masterworks" series.  ISBN: 1-85798-996-1.  It is available off of Amazon.com

To the left is the cover of that issue of Weird Tales, featuring an unlikely Conan protecting Bêlit with a rather feeble looking knife.  The artist was Margaret Brundage.

The Horror in the Jungle (The Winged One)

Original interior artwork from Weird Tales, depicting Bêlit's ghost coming back from death to save Conan from the Winged One.  The caption at the bottom reads "Her lithe figure shimmered ivory beneath the moon".

This story featured Conan's famous opinion about gods ("I would not tread in their shadow") and one of the few times he actually discusses Crom and his own beliefs.  Bêlit is Conan's first true love and he stayed with her for three years.  The story also features a ruined city, strange other worldly critters, treasure, and lots of combat.

Marvel comics, beginning with issue 58, did a wonderful adaptation of this story, concluding it in issue 100.
