Conan is now King of Aquilonia, the mightiest empire of the Hyborian Age, but he had been deposed by Xaltotun during this period of his rule.  His rule was characterized by a certain level of religious tolerance.   He had no wife at this point, but did maintain a large seraglio for his pleasures.

Combat
Conan's fighting style has gained his well known deadliness at this period of time.  His combat reflexes give him quite the advantage in mass battles, with up to four attacks of opportunity as soldiers pass through his threat zone.  His Great Cleave skill allows him to further wade through lesser warriors, crushing them left and right.

Rage: Four times per day, Conan can go into a rage and increase his Strength and Constitution by +4, and gains a +2 morale bonus  to Will saves.  He suffers a -2 penalty to AC.

Fast movement: Conan's speed is increased by +10 feet when wearing no armor, light armor, and shields.

Sneak Attack: Conan strikes a vital spot for extra damage  whenever he catches an opponent flat footed or when he flanks an  opponent.

Evasion: If exposed to an effect that allows a Reflex save  for half damage Conan takes no damage if that save is successful.

Uncanny Dodge: Conan retains his dexterity bonus to his AC even when caught flatfooted or surprised.  He can sense danger before it even becomes apparent.  Conan at this point cannot be flanked.

Damage Reduction: Conan gains the extraordinary ability to shrug off some amount of injury from each blow or attack.

Right is a scan of my copy of Gnome Press' "Conan the Conqueror", the first time Robert E. Howard's "The Hour of the Dragon" appeared in complete book form.  Right now this is the only Gnome Press book I have, but I hope to eventually complete the set, but convincing my wife of the importance of this task has proved very daunting.

Robert E. Howard's story, "Phoenix on the Sword," was first published in Weird Tales in December of 1932.  It was the first published Conan story and was a rewrite of an unsellable King Kull story, "By this Axe I rule".  The story can also be found in the Ace/Lancer paperback "Conan the Usurper"; the Arkham "Skull Face and Others" and the Gnome Press collection "King Conan".  Thoth Amon appears in this tale, but he is not after Conan.  Conan just happens to be in the vicinity of Thoth Amon's real victim when the demon appeared.

Robert E. Howard's story, "The Scarlet Citadel," was first published in Weird Tales in January of 1933.  The story can also be found in the Ace/Lancer paperback "Conan the Usurper"; the Arkham "Skull Face and Others", and the Gnome Press collection "King Conan".

Robert E. Howard's story, "The Hour of the Dragon," was first published in Weird Tales as a five part serial, beginning in December of 1935 and ending in April 1936.  It is Robert E. Howard's only Conan full length novel.  The story can also be found in the Ace/Lancer paperback "Conan the Conquerer"; and the Gnome Press collection "Conan the Conquerer".  It is also available in the Burkley/Putnam edition, "The Hour of the Dragon".  This is easily my second favorite Conan tale of all time (following "The People of the Black Circle")
