The Crawler in the Dark is a large formidable foe haunting the hidden crypts and forgotten temples of southern Hyperborea.

The
Crawler is timeless and seems to never truly age but only grow bigger as time passes. The creature is resplendent in black or smoky grey scales and its ridged back and tail are spiked with black ivory horn-like protrusions. It crawls with amazing speed upon its thick scaled belly dragging itself forward with its two muscle ridged arms and thrusting tail. Its claws are black and its beak is grey. Burning red or purple glowing eyes regard its prey with a dark gaze indicating bloodshed to come.

It can eat twice its own considerable body weight in meat per day and seems to store the excess food as fat it lives off of in times when hapless adventurers smartly stay well away from the haunted domain of its bloodthirsty maw. The crawler is the very top of the food chain and will tolerate nothing to reside within its domain, with the exception of the undead which it seems to ignore completely.

Combat

The Crawler battles unmercifully.  Despite its intelligence, it will not listen to pleas or cries for mercy.  It's hunger drives it on to fight and devour.  It does not seek death, however, and will not fight against obviously overwhelming odds and will usually retreat from a losing battle (usually when it reaches ten hit points or so.)

Fear Aura: At all times the crawler radiates a 10 ft sphere of chilling effect that all who approach must make a fort save of DC18 against or be effected by a fear spell cast by a 10th level sorcerer.

Fear Bite: On a successful biting attack the victim must make a fort save against the same chilling effect as the aura except at a DC25.

Refusal to Die: Upon reaching 0 hit points, the Crawler may take one partial action on its turn every round until it reaches -10 hit points.
