Robert E. Howard, "The Scarlet Citadel"
Pelias is Tsotha-Lanti's rival. Pelias' soul, which can be seen by reptiles and their kith, is such that the scaly creatures will flee his presence. Pelias is a very excellent summoner. There is some debate as to Pelias' alignment. I personally favor an evil alignment (after all, the foul things of the world flee from him). Sure, he helped out Conan, but even a basically evil person can show gratitude. Pelius is driven by vengeance in the story, and doesn't seem terribly interested in the welfare of others, but... when I gave Pelius an evil alignment, I got soooo many emails from folks who consider him to be the single good wizard in the Conan Saga. I compromised and gave him a neutral alignment. Use what alignment you please, I guess.
Robert E. Howard's story, "The Scarlet Citadel,"
was first published in Weird Tales in January of 1933. The story can
also be found in the Ace/Lancer paperback "Conan the Usurper"; the Arkham
"Skull Face and Others", and the Gnome Press collection "King
Conan".
