The Pool of the Black One
(circa The Pool of the Black One)

Wonderous Item

This pool of water petrifies anything (or anyone) dipped into it.  Not only petrifying them, but shrinking them down to about a six inch height, making them into small stone statuettes.  The Black Ones use this pool in their diabolic unholy rituals.  It is unknown why.  Perhaps it grants them power.  Perhaps it is merely a ritual as many religious rites often are, with a more symbolic meaning than any practical use.

The Black Ones keep all those they petrify on shelves surrounding the Pool.
A Black One from Donald M. Grant's limited edition "Pool of the Black One"
"The Pool of the Black One" by Robert E. Howard first appeared in the October 1933 issue of Weird Tales.  It can be found also in the Lancer/Ace collection "Conan the Adventurer" and in Donald M. Grant's "The Pool of the Black One."  It is currently available in the British "Conan Chronicles Volume 1: The People of the Black Circle".

All the artwork on this page comes from the Donald M. Grant edition of this story.
