Still trying to put distance between herself and
Pah-Dishah, Sonja continues westward into Nemedia and in its sprawling
forest called Darkwood. There, looking for a hospitable inn she is
menaced by a wizard, Vincentius. She slays him and rescues a young
warrior named Hunwolf; but he turns out to be as treacherous as any
sorcerer, and she must slay him, as well.Asked by a stranger, Ghunthar, to carry a brass coffer to a nearby castle, she finds its contents invaluable in dealing with the werewolf that haunts the forest - which turns out to be Ghunthar himself. More supernatural dangers await her in an eons-old temple inhabited by demonic satyrs and the slithering elder horrors they serve. There she comes upon a dying captive priest of Mitra, and sorrowfully executes him to spare him further agony before killing the chief satyr. Near the forest's edge, she happens upon three bandits torturing a halpless, bound wretch. Making short shrift of the robbers, she discovers the victim is the nameless mercenary captain who instigated the slaughter of her family. The bandits' torments have driven him mad. Cheated of her revenge, but knowing she will no longer be haunted by his hated face, she leaves him to be finished off by the wolves of Darkwood. Combat She continues to battle with style and grace. She is wearing the 'armor' she is famous for - the chain mail bikini (her AC drops to 15). This does not add any actual armor value, but is distracting for opponents, and gives her extreme freedom of movement. |
