Summonings are vile, twisted little creatures
from the Abyss. They vary in appearance, but all have
features in common. They are short and stunted, with small, useless wings,
and sharp, toothy beaks. The legs are thin and bony, and the hands end in
little raking claws.
Summonings are devilishly clever,
delighting in destruction and havoc.
Combat
In
combat, the summoning attacks with its claws and teeth. If both claws hit,
they cling to their opponent.
Improved Grab (Ex): If the creature hits with a melee weapon (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. No initial touch attack is required, and Tiny and Small creatures do not suffer a special size penalty.
Blood Drain (Ex): A summoning can suck blood from a living victim with its teeth by making a successful grapple check. If it clings to the foe, it drains blood, inflicting 1d4 points of permanent Constitution drain each round the cling is maintained.
This
monster appeared in the TSR D&D Conan Module "Conan Unchained!", published around 1984 by
David Cook. The Turanian army is marching against one of its own small
cities to the west. For reasons unknown, the governor of that city has
rebelled against the Khan of Turan. This is not a Robert E. Howard story, but the creature
is still very cool. My thanks to Mr. Black for
making this module available to me.
