Thoth Amon, the most infamous of Stygian wizards, made his home in the oasis of Khajar in shadow haunted Stygia.  At one time he was the formost of the Black Ring, the most powerful and unrelentingly evil of all the unholy brotherhoods of arcana, but was overthrown by Thutothmes sometime prior to "Phoenix on the Sword".  Later, after recovering his Ring, he rose to ascendancy again and, by the time of the events of "Conan of Aquilonia", he was again the leader of the Black Ring.

Thoth-Amon is noted for his arrogance and his lordly bearing.  Even when serving as Ascalante's slave, he kept his regal attitude.

Combat:

He prefers to fight with his magical spells.  When he is away from his home, he relies on his Ring (
the Ring of Set) for his magic, for his magical tomes are much to precious to take with him.  This proved his undoing by Thutothmes, for if his ring was stolen while he was away, Thoth-Amon could be rendered powerless.

If at all possible, Thoth-Amon sends underlings or
outsiders to do his battling for him.  In Conan the Buccaneer Thoth-Amon animated a tapestry to slow down Conan.  In "Phoenix on the Sword" he summons a thing from the abyss to slay Ascalante and all who was with him.

Combined Levels: Add the character's Black Ring level's to the levels of any other arcane spell casting class he has when determining the level-based effects of spells.

Blood Sorcery: Thoth Amon can use the blood of a freshly slain victim to increase the power of his spells.  He can either add two to his casting level, add two to the DC of the spell, or add any metamagic feat desired to the spell without increasing its level.  He can also add sacrificial blood to magic items for the same effects.

Spell Dilettante: Thoth Amon can choose from the Druid spell list when selecting new spells that are known to him when he gains levels.  These spells count as arcane for Thoth Amon.  This is a supernatural ability.

Powerful Presence: Thoth Amon gains +2 to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks.  Once per day, as a standard action, he can force all living beings within a 30 foot radius to make a Will save (DC 10+Black Ring class levels+Charisma bonus) or suffer a -2 morale penalty on attacks, saves and skill checks for 1 round / black ring level.  This is a supernatural ability.

Magical Might: The difficulty class for all spells cast by Thoth Amon is increased by 2.

Knowing Stare: Once per day, Thoth Amon can invoke a 30 foot gaze attack that holds all living creatures.  Those affected must make a Will save (DC 10+Black Ring level+Charisma Bonus) or be held for 1 round/Black Ring level.  This is a supernatural ability.

Mastered Name: Upon reaching 10th level, a Thoth Amon can sense when another being speaks his name.  When this occurs the wizard knows the exact location and the name of the speaker.  He is free to ignore such knowledge, retaining the details for when they seem significant.  This awareness is sufficient to allow the wizard to scry on the individual as if he had just met the speaker (DC 10).  It does not convey enough information to allow the wizard to teleport to the speaker's location, though such information could be gathered through other magical means, including scrying.

Thoth-Amon was featured in the short story "Phoenix on the Sword" (the first published Conan story) by Robert E. Howard.  He was also featured in the L. Sprague De Camp novels "Conan the Buccaneer" and "Conan of Aquilonia".  Thoth-Amon also appeared in the story "The Treasure of Tranicos", written into a Howard story by L. Sprague De Camp.  (The original text of Howard's story, titled "The Black Stranger", did not have Thoth-Amon in it.  The original text, unchanged by De Camp, can be found in the book "Echoes of Valor".) This conversion was done as a collaborative effort between Vincent N. Darlage and T. Patrick Rooney.  The story "Phoenix on the Sword" can be found in Wierd Tales, December 1932, also in Skull Face and Others (Arkham House) 1946, King Conan (Gnome Press) 1953, and Conan the Usurper (Lancer/Ace) 1967
