"There, in a dark, cluttered, and filled chamber that smelled of old
parchment, they came upon Sabalisstra Alounace, the witch of the Elder Times. The woman was as ancient
as the oldest dragon ever seen. Her skin was like wrinkled black leather, something
nearly unheard of among the fey races. Yet her glowing red eyes were like sparks
from a forge, alive and vibrant." ~Illithid Slayer
Chronicles XIV
Sabalisstra
Alounace is the last of House Alounace,
a Drow House that died out generations ago (elf generations to boot). She now
counts her years in millennia; how old she is, none knows, nor do any know how
she achieved her extraordinary longevity. She claims to be older than Sha'a.
Thousands of years ago, a young Sabalisstra studied
wizardry, and found she had a knack for conjuration/summoning magic. She also
found she was completely inept at casting transmutation magic. As she grew
in power and in knowledge, she became zwy'il, and
was on the paths of Lolthtanchwi. When she first
showed she had ambition, drive, and a willingness to put herself before others,
she was given the Chwineka, the Test of Darkness, by mighty Lolth. She had no doubt when the time came, and her arrogance
carried her through the test, as her dark mistress watched her undertake a difficult
lesson of magic. Young Sabalisstra began committing
horrid acts of murder, fraud, deception, and coercion. The Chwikezzar
was upon her. She learned that a rival student of her mistress had discovered
a rare and powerful artifact. Young Sabalisstra used
deceit to gain the location, and used trickery to gain the artifact first, risking
the ire of a very powerful House. She gifted the item to her dark mistress,
and was rewarded with additional spells, and a higher position in the black
school. She was also introduced to the coveted dark art of demonology.
Cruel, twisted, and utterly evil from birth, she followed the Dark Road as a
means to ultimate power. Hungry and rapacious, she cared little for the pain
and suffering she soon caused; she was interested only in crushing those who
stood before her. Soon enough, though, she was given the most infamous of Lolth's
tests – the Chwidridera, the Test of the Drider.
She had proven herself as having high aspirations, and as being a skilled backstabber
and conniver. She soon had disturbing visions of her body being consumed from
the inside by a mass of spiders. She began to fear spiders, such was the power
of the dreams, and her paranoia increased. Her strong will, however, asserted
itself, and she managed to control her irrational fears, and the fears vanished.
She had passed.
Young Sabalisstra became more and more adept at summoning
demons and instructing them to do as she commanded. Then she was presented
with the Chwiakrell, the Test of Lies. The web of intrigue and doublecrossing
she was involved in was tightening around her. She planted seeds of lies and
deception with the dual purpose of bringing down an enemy House and propelling
herself higher up the ladder of status. She heard a rumor about herself that
she was only a half-drow, and had human blood in her. She quickly quashed the
rumor and the perpetrator of the rumor by utterly humiliating her enemy, removing
her from her position of power – and had her killed.
Lolth became jealous of young Sabalisstra's
power, and she wanted all of young Sabalisstra's spell
books – her entire library. She saw Lolth's messenger crawling along her books,
and she knew that the Chwidencha, the Test of Sacrifice, was upon her. She packed
up her library and donated it to the Temple of Lolth.
At this point she found herself unable to restore any of the spells she knew
because she had no spellbooks.
It did not take long for her to gain new spellbooks
and build a new library of dark tomes and vile scrolls. She passed the Chwidevbril by betraying her lover, killing her after destroying
her reputation among the drow. She had resumed her study of wizardry by this
point. She then saw a spider crawl across a map showing territory controlled
by illithids. She knew the Chwihendrell, the Test
of Domination, was upon her. She summoned up demons and other horrors, and
attacked a community of illithids, destroying them utterly, and capturing their
thralls, making them drow slaves. She enjoyed the experience so much, that
she went to the surface and captured an entire city of humans – and the ruling
Chaos Lord. All were killed or enslaved by her and her demons.
Sabalisstra learned
early to tell exactly what a person wanted by just looking at them, and could
often determine a person's sexuality and their main sexual kinks or fetishes.
She learned she could pitch an irresistible deal to people, and would summon
demons to sexually pleasure her customers. She soon had a regular stable of
magical creatures, summoned or captured, that she would offer her customers
as sexual playthings. She eventually opened an otherworldly brothel in Erelhei-Cinlu.
She ran it personally for many decades, then sold most of her ownership when
she tired of it.
Sabalisstra was now much older, and in her prime,
and she had begun learning the skills of the binder, a very specialized branch
of demonology, using her knowledge and skill to first summon demons, and then
bind them within magical items to harness their energies. For several centuries
she was called upon as one of the greatest of magic-crafters. Rulers of Houses
demanded swords, shields, and armors enchanted by her, and she found she could
create powerful artifacts.
Several centuries went by, and Sabalisstra found herself
reaching a pinnacle of her existence as a creator of magic items. She soon
began to have visions. In these visions, Lolth taunted
her, berated her, and belittled her. Lolth degraded
her victories and revealed her weaknesses. Deprived of the restful meditation
that all elves require, Sabalisstra started seeing
hallucinations of the demon-queen of spiders. Then, one day, the visions stopped
abruptly. Sabalisstra knew she had to face Lolth.
She fought for her life against a proxy of Lolth,
and she brought all the demonic forces at her command against the proxy, sacrificing
much of her power to bring down the deadly divine being. She killed the proxy.
She passed the last test, the Chwilolth, the Test of Lolth. However,
during the fight, she lost one of her ears. She summoned a powerful demon who
grafted a fiendish ear in the lost ear's place.
For another hundred years or so, Sabalisstra continued
to create magic items, binding demons to them, and selling the items. Eventually,
she tired of this. Sabalisstra felt the need to change vocations, and she sought
out fresh bloodroot, and ate it each morning for a week. Surviving, she soon
began to manifest the strange powers of an oracle. Her new powers of foresight
and intuition brought her new demand from the heads of the Houses, and she found
new power.
As the millennia passed, she soon found herself becoming an eldritch master,
and learned even to cast divine magic as arcane magic. She traveled the planes
for centuries, particularly the Abyss, and has stayed in the palaces of several
demon princes as a guest (and enjoyed several of their beds) more than once.
Currently, however, she had retreated from drow society several hundred years
ago, and much of modern drow society has forgotten her. Events have occurred
recently that has her wishing to be reintroduced to the powers and Houses of
Erelhei-Cinlu, the drow city where she resides
in a forgotten and darksome district. Although she does not draw much income
from her divinations, and draws a complete lack of demand for her demon-bound
magical artifacts, she still gains a modest income from her brothel of otherworldly
pleasures. Although she no longer runs the brothel, she is still part owner.
