Hrothton, home the Nexus of Conjuration, was the first nexus
to appear on Inzeladun. Indeed, Hrothton was, at one time, the gleaming
capital of Pre-First Age Inzeladun, home to the vile Samat and their sub-human
servants.
Although now just a small city, Hrothton was once the high-built, marble and
granite crown of all the Vulanpan Empire. Her walls looked mountainously
down upon the primordial jungles of primitive Inzeladun, and her heaven reaching
spires were an alabastine multitude. She was opulent among cities, superb
and magisterial, paramount over all. Its original name was Tscho
Vulanpanmu (it was renamed by an Indorian during the Fifth Age).
Proud and Lordly was Tscho Vulanpanmu, and her humblest dwellings were more than
the palaces of other cities, and they worshipped a strange
deity whose only presence was that of a hand. It is said the area is
still holy to this Power.
The ruins of this city are said to exist still, buried deep in the swamps that
surround Hrothton, but this is unconfirmed. It is said that the dragons of
the swamp have horded the beyond-ancient relics of ancient Tsho Vulanpanmu.
It is also said that the ancient snake people, now interbred with man and called
Yuan-Ti, still have remnants that survive still, deep in the swamp or under the
ground.
No one knows what brought about the end of the Vulanpan Empire nor what force
laid Tscho Vulanpanmu low. It died aeons before the first elf took her
tentative step onto the soil of Inzeladun and nothing living remembers.
However, there is an Undead who knows. Merandius, the Guardian of Time,
knows. And he has forbidden all chronomancers to go back that far into
history... and he slays anyone who challenges that law. This city guarded
by Merandius more fiercely than any other on Inzeladun, for it is rumored that
here the truth may be found about History.
Currently, the oldest building in Hrothton is the Library. It is a
mystical building that dates to the Dark Age betwixt the First and Second Ages.
No one living knows who built it or what it was originally built for, but some
theorize that it was originally a temple to the strange Samat deity of Tscho
Vulanpanmu. Others believe it was built by a dragon, either as a testimony
to his own power, where he was worshipped by early man, or as a shrine to Tiamat.
All that is known for certain is the name "Kalmal", which is carved
into a cornerstone of the building in a forgotten language. Did he, or it,
build it? Was Kalmal a dragon, or a Samat? Or was he a powerful
early human?
The powers around Hrothton seem to enhance the necromantic as well as the
conjuratic. The huge graveyard to the north of present-day Hrothton dates
back to the Third Age, although most of the burials there are from the Fifth
Age, when a massive battle was fought there. A tower stands in the center
of this colossal graveyard. This tower is the second oldest building in
the area. Again, the word "Kalmal" is carved into its
cornerstone. Most recently it was used as a lair by the lich Xanthor.
Currently it is against the law for anyone to enter that tower without the
express permission of Lady Kia. Thus far, anyone who has entered it
without her permission has never come back out. What secrets do those
ancient walls hold? Perhaps Lady Kia and her associates are the only
living souls who know. And they ain't talking.

Visual: Most of the town is very orderly and laid out, with noble and wealthy estates on the northern outskirts of town. To the south is the beginning of the Great Swamp. The southern portion of Hrothton is far newer than the northern section, although both sections are built on top of ancient ruins. Graveyards and swamplands dominate the landscape around Hrothton, lending it quite a foreboding air.
Behavior: Citizens are on edge, pushed by Yam ibn Saud's men, yet wanting to be loyal to their beloved leader, Lady Kia. Lady Kia's black warriors from across the Sea of Storms are accorded respect by the population, but the Saudians are reviled (in secret). Still, the population greets strangers with smiles and volunteer whatever information they may have, once the stranger has shown himself to be non-Saudian. They are outwardly emotional, and judge people instinctively.
