THE REPLACER CAMPAIGN

Book 1  Kar Xaxorn, Taxarsun the Monk, and Garom the Bard battled a female ogre, a Krenshar, and some humanoids on an extra-dimensional fortress that had opened a portal into a tavern.  Kar and Taxarsun had to kill Garom the Bard.  Later, after hiring the services of a sorceress named Laraway and a half orc named Sirranon, Kar got involved with Yaruk, another replacer, and looted the tomb of Ebly, a fourth Age tinkerer who lived when the building now used as a library was the main castle of King Alisander.

Kar, Laraway, and Sirranon explore the passages of Ebly and undercover a huge Troglodyte war.  They find that the Troglodytes have discovered psionics and are breeding psychic warriors.  They defeated one after much effort.  Currently they are trapped by one sect of the Troglodytes and their illithid leader.

Trapped, they found that they could escape through an old chimney that links the floors of the dungeons.  Their troglodyte guide also told them a bit of what this clan of Troglodytes was up to.  Apparently the mind flayer known as Uropordellmious ("Servant of Golem Lore") was intent upon rebuilding the ancient Flesh Golem known as "Dûhm" (pronounced
doom), an abomination destroyed by Xug Thaquaroth many centuries before.  The pieces of this golem were bound and scattered throughout the seven levels of this dungeon.  Uropordellmious and his seven illithid servants made the queen of this clan a thrall.  A rival mind flayer, named Absterarint, who is a minion of Xug Thaquaroth, allied himself with the king of another Troglodyte kingdom and created war, which hampered Uropordellmious' search.  Absterarint also gave additional power to the high priest of the clan (a were-crocodile Troglodyte named Fakazanmot) to cement his place in the tribe's hierarchy.  Absterarint started teaching the psionic arts to the Troglodytes.

The party battled four of Uropordellmious' mind flayer psychic warriors (Maanzithid, Alsine, Lugrihoon, and Ilsendordell) just as they discovered the Eyes of Dûhm.  After killing the flayers, Laraway the Rage Mage cut out Kar's eyes and inserted the Eyes of Dûhm.

They snuck up a level and came into the throne room of the Queen and Uropordellmious and battled them.  Uropordellmious' troglodyte assassins came in to assist the flayer, but it was too late.  The party killed him and the queen, as well as the assassins.  They took the Hand of Dûhm, which lay upon the statue in the temple.  Laraway chopped off Kar's left hand and put on the Hand of Dûhm, which grafted itself onto Kar.

They took Uropordellmious' head up a few levels and entered the domains of King Krasukhil ("Heartfoe") of the Troglodytes.  King Krasukhil had replaced his own right arm with the Arm of Dûhm.  After presenting the head to Krasakhil and Absterarint the illithid, the king gave the party a hefty chest, telling them it contained the magical works of Ebly.

The party took the chest up to the surface.  After contacting Sothard about flesh golems (see
the Message Board), Kar opened the chest.  Inside was a magic mirror that sucked him into itself.  Laraway managed to free him and they covered the mirror with a black cloth, which they figured out would render the mirror harmless.  They removed the black cloth covering the books of Ebly, only to find a severed Medusa head.  Kar was petrified instantly.

Book 2 Laraway knew she needed help to avenge their friend, and she decided to kill King Krasukhil.  She and Sirranon met Akdar the Psychic Warrior and enlisted his aid.  They went down to the Troglodyte kingdom of Krasukhil and made their way into the temple complex.  They battled the high priest Fakazanmat, who escaped by melding into the stone statue of Laogzed, his vile god.  Meanwhile, Fakazanmat had mentally summoned Absterarint, who was slain by Laraway the Rage Mage.

As they made their way to the throne room of Krasukhil, they were attacked by a horde of Troglodytes.  As they were ready to fight the horde, having secured a defendable spot, Fakazanmat's curate (also a were-crocodile priest of Laogzed) came from behind and
held Sirranon.  Akdar the Psychic Warrior battled the curate and was cut down.   Akdar managed to self-stabilize himself, but remained unconscious.  The curate ran toward Laraway and the held Sirranon.  He coup-de-graced Sirranon, but was himself killed by the very angry Rage Mage.

As Laraway battled the horde of Troglodytes by herself, slaying nearly twenty of them, King Krasukhil came from behind.  The Troglodyte's stopped fighting, waiting to see their king with the magic arm defeat the female.  Krasukhil
coup-de-graced the psychic warrior and entered into battle with Laraway.  She killed him, and the remaining Troglodyte's agreed to follow her.

Book 3 Laraway still needed to dispel the magic that has petrified Kar, so she questions the Troglodytes, and leans of a dragon that dwells on the Seventh Level of the dungeon.  She decided to hunt down and kill this dragon, hoping something of use may be in its horde, or that she might manage to discover how to dispel magic on her own.  Figuring out that the dragon was about 40 some-odd years old, she knew she couldn't take on a juvenile dragon on her own, so she opted to head back to the surface and hire some help.  She hired an 8th level paladin named Cestian Maltor, a rogue-warrior named Rexnon, and Rexnon's two fighter cohorts.

They battled an efreet named Yasuf ibn Yafan, who had been engaged by the dragon's mother to guard the dragon for 101 years, and killed him.  Also they fought a Stone Golem (in the shape of a dragon) that killed the two cohorts.  After that, four guardian ettins arrived and nearly killed the paladin and Rexnon.

After healing, they came to a large stone bridge (100 yards long) over an underground river.  They started to cross, the paladin in the lead.  The dragon dropped on them from the darkness, killing the paladin instantly with a bite attack (the three-20's in a row instant kill rule in DMG).  Rexnon grabbed up the paladin's Dragon Bane glaive and battled the dragon with Laraway.  Rexnon was killed in short order, and then the real battle began.  Bleeding and barely alive, Laraway finally killed the dragon.

She returned to their lair and
dispelled the magic on Kar.  They learned from notes in a book that the Heart of Dûhm, if placed in a heartless chest, could bring back the dead.  Laraway and Kar decided to procure the Heart for Sirranon.  They found a secret door in the dragon's lair and found a hall and room filled with chains... and ten Kytons.  Kar was killed by the Kytons, but Laraway the Rage Mage won her way through and acquired the Heart.  She cut open Kar's chest, took out his heart, and inserted the Heart of Dûhm.  Alive, he prayed to Catemar, and was granted a Raised Dead spell and resurrected Sirranon the Half Orc.

Book 4 They found a plane-traveling portal and they investigated the magic tower of a long deceased Githyanki.

Book 5 Kar and Sirranon decided to go to Catemar to find out about the bones of Grindill being transported there.  They chartered a boat and left Alisander.  Kar defended the ship from pirates with a swarm of insects.  He found out that a shin bone from Grindill was on board.  When the ship put in to Zimbala Cabe, Kar found out that the captain had smuggled the bone off and was giving it to the temple of Tenebrion.  Kar discovered that the town was actually ruled by elves, although the humans who lived there had no idea.  Kar met and befriended an elven rogue, who took them with her to Acheron to recover a magic sword.  They battled an insane Cornugon, who nearly killed them all.  The horned devil's whip took out Sirranon and the rogue, so Kar almost single-handedly had to fight the Cornugon (although the damage Sirranon caused in his one round of attacks helped).

Book 6 On Acheron, Kar, Sirranon, and the Elf woman battled an Axiomatic Blue Dragon (Young Adult) for the magic sword.  Sirranon acquired a belt of giant strength from the dragon's hoard and Kar took a Staff of Life.  Returning to Zimbala Cabe, they encountered a dead dog... twice.  The same dog.  Kar resurrected the dog with the Staff of Life and noticed that there were no dogs in the entire town.  Kar learned that the people of Catemar were trying to resurrect Grindill, and that the Temple of Tenebrion in Zimbala Cabe were trying to prevent that from happening, having their own plans toward the bones of Grindill.  The elf woman offered to allow Kar into the Tenebrion Cult, but Kar declined.   He also learned that the human ruler of Zimbala Cabe had summoned a Pit Fiend to help him.  Kar also noticed that the shadows in Zimbala Cabe flipped toward the sun twice.

Book 7 Kar traveled to Catemar with Sirranon and Laraway to follow the false bone of Grindill(Artim 17- Eul 9) Once there, he met Wulfgar and Furland in a tavern outside the city.  Wulfgar, a priest of the Indorian gods, agreed to escort Kar and his party into the darksome city, where the false bone had been taken.  Not figuring out where the black carriage went, Kar decided to stop at the Temple of Catemar and look for jobs.  Kar was introduced to Zepe Morrel, a puppetmaster who was renowned in the city for his masterful creations.  Wulfgar and Furland, working now as Temple Guards witnessed the lich Merandius coming to the temple and trading a potent crystal halberd for the right to ride in one of the black carriages.  The carriage took the lich to the central palace of the well-ordered city.  Kar discovered that one had to be "known" in order to gain access to the black carriages, or at least be invited by one whom was "known".

Seeking funds, Kar talked Furland into fighting in the gladiator arena of Catemar.  Furland was killed in the first round by an Mbankanae native with a longspear.  Kar and Wulfgar then met up with another temple guard named Leofric.  Together, Kar and Leofric entered the gladiatorial arena and were paired against an invisible blade and reaping mauler team.  Although Kar managed to kill the invisible blade, Leofric, trying to kill the reaping mauler, killed Kar, and then the reaping mauler killed Leofric.

Laraway used the staff of life to resurrect Kar, and Kar then resurrected Leofric.  Kar sent a message to the palace, telling them that the bone they received recently was a fake.  In short order, a black carriage arrived for Kar and his companions.  They were taken to the black palace and were engaged to steal the real bone and return it to Catemar. (Eul 9-10)

Kar gathered his companions, including Leofric and Zepe the Puppetmaster (who chose to leave his pampered life to go elsewhere), and left for a return to Zimbala Cabe.  (Eul 11-Ankou 2) They found Zimbala Cabe to be destroyed, and the rest of the people were holed up in the castle, where monsters (elves) attacked them nightly.  Apparently the city was attacked by elves.  Kar led the group to the realm of the elves and found the underground castle to be filled with Yuan Ti.  After some intense fighting, they killed several Yuan-Ti.  They found several captive elves, and a captive human named Selina.  They killed more Yuan Ti (and a pit fiend) and explored the complex, eventually capturing a Yuan-Ti diplomat from one of the noble families.  This Yuan-Ti, named Gorkr, was placed in a Zone of Truth (from Wulfgar) after Zepe mindfogged him.  The Yuan-Ti diplomat spilled his guts, hoping for mercy.  He told them that the black ships were illithid craft, and that a pit fiend had possessed the elf queen.  He also told them that someone named Ordiss Ool was behind the illithid invasions and the fall of Ahmn.  He told them that Ordiss Ool had ordered the shin bone of Grindill shipped to Alisander.  After this, the Yuan-Ti was killed.  Kar, Zepe, and Wulfgar masterminded a plan to rescue the Elven Queen, and they executed the plan perfectly, banishing the pit fiend and slaughtering the rest of the Yuan-Ti.

The Elven Queen thanked them, and the elves were freed.  She summoned her silver dragon friend who lived in the lake beneath the complex and asked him to help them to attack one of the black illithid nautilus ships that floated there.  En masse, and running out of spells, the group attacked the illithids, killing most of them on the deck quickly.  Inside the ship, one of the illithids managed to stop most of them with a mental suggestion, but Laraway and Zepe were still going strong, so it turned invisible after fleeing and returned to the room as the other illithid switched minds with Sirranon (who couldn't make a Will save if his life depended on it).  Zepe was on the ball and caught the switch.  As they were working out a way to unswitch them, the invisible illithid attacked Leofric and extracted his brain before he was killed.  Using a dispel magic, the group saved Sirranon and killed the final illithid.  Judging from the illithid's logs, they judged that the ship with the bone was but three days ahead of them. (Ankou 2)

Book 8 Having no time to lose, Kar Xaxorn (Donald) piloted the nautiloid ship out of the cavern.  He found that by sitting in the throne in the midst of the ship, he could control the craft.  They worked out a way to reach Alisander in a few days, but Zepe the Puppetmaster (Mark) felt that the other ship would have done the same thing.  However, in a few days they spied the other craft on the river.  The other nautiloid rose into the air to see what its sister ship needed, why it had broken from the plan.  Kar piloted the ship toward the enemy craft, and, once in range, started attacking.  Leofric (Allen) and Morila (Dawn) fired the heavy ballistae and Laraway (Barbara) flung lightning bolts.  Wulfgar (Chris) destroyed many of the enemy with a well placed Blade Barrier.  The other ship responded by raking its pointed ram alongside Kar's black ship.
Kar quickly realized he was no match for the trained pilot of the other ship.  Suddenly, illithids (dressed as pirates) and grimlock thralls teleported onto the deck of Kar's craft.  As Kar and his opponent maneuvered the ships, ramming and raking each other, the mind flayers and the heroes battled.  Leofric, enhanced by Kar's spells (cast before the battle began), was incredibly deadly.  A very powerful illithid was nearly killed, and had to teleport deeper into the craft, hoping to hide until forgotten.  Leofric easily slew the two Grimlocks that threatened him and Morila, as Morila slew another mind flayer.
One of the mind flayers bull-rushed Wulfgar, pushing the Indorian through a gauntlet of mind flayers and grimlocks (getting attacks of opportunities from them as he was pushed through their threatened areas by the bull rush).  Sirranon the Half-Orc (Vincent) slew and cleaved through several, and Laraway fought hard, slaying another and cleaving one.  The mind flayers managed to grasp the heads of Sirranon and Wulfgar and proceeded the process that would extract their brains, but Zepe bull-rushed Wulfgar and shoved him out of the grasp of the flayer and Laraway slew the flayer that had Sirranon.
Several of the illithids managed to get into the cabins of the ship, each hoping to hide until forgotten, but the other ship managed to ram Kar's ship, destroying Kar's craft, and it broke apart beneath their feet.   Laraway polymorphed Sirranon and Wulfgar into birds (as well as the Elvin gunners), and Kar escaped by flying away on the Spelljammer Helm.  Leofric made an impressive leap onto the enemy craft, grabbing onto the ram.  Laraway and Morila also jumped, landing on the enemy deck as it passed through their ship.  Zepe flew on his griffon and landed on the deck.
They hunted down and killed the enemy pilot, then landed the wounded craft.  They found the enemy log and read the following:

Ulophomeen 1  Summoned by Talaire to bring receptacle for three divinity sparks from the One Created.  We are to pick up the receptacle, a leather and wood box containing a bone and godsblood, at Zimbala Cabe, from the elves there.   In exchange for taking this box to Akuneyptab in The City Upon the Corpse, we will receive two hundred elven slaves from Felyntranzaer the Drow.  This will go a long way to easing my banishment from the House of Xogotha. I am curious about rumors of the Flayer Gates being used again on the Sister World.  I must contact Lugriordellator and ask if they have sensed the Great Mind of the One Created within the Flayer Gates.
Ulophomeen 14  Arrived at Zimbala Cabe and picked up the receptacle from Talaire, who has possessed an elf queen.  The elder race accompanying him remind me of the old tales, when the Queen of Angust called us to help them against the elder race, a race we bred to begin with, and we made the One for them.  Many things of this trip recall to mind the old tales.  Rumors of Flayer Gates, the elder race, hints of things Angustian, Drow, and, of course, the City Upon the Corpse itself.

Ulophomeen 15  Have heard that the Flayer Gates are now inert.  I wonder what that means?  No matter.  Someone will read the Nan Curinir and will return the One Created one day.  Our supremacy will be made manifest, and if this rumor proves true, then our power has only hit a minor setback

They debated whether or not they should take the ship to Alisander for repairs or to this Oard place they heard about.  They decided that if they went to Alisander, that they may have to contend with this Akuneyptab, reasoning that "The City Upon the Corpse" was Alisander.  They also learned that these crafts could travel away from this world to other planets and, of course, they found the cargo of slaves and the bone of Grindill...
Each of them drank of the Godsblood and Kar, assisted by Laraway, inserted the Shinbone of Grindill into himself, taking on the Divinely Infused template (from Monte Cook's Requiem for a God).
Deciding upon Oard, they flew the ship first to intercept Zepe's supplies, and then went to Oard, where they met Roland and crew (who was alerted that an illithid warship was flying toward the city).  They were invited to use the shipyards to repair their craft, and were invited to Roland's castle for dinner.  They briefly explored Oard, encountering a flying hat and a few centaurs. They met the Apothoker.
Zepe really liked Roland's castle and asked the castle golem if there were any secrets in the castle that Roland did not know about.  The castle indicated that there were thirty three rooms that guarded the secrets of Grindill in the castle.  Zepe found out that they had to take a test to reach these rooms.  Zepe tried to go around Roland, but Roland found out. Roland hired the Replacer and his companions to take the Test of Grindill and find these rooms, and report back any secrets they find.
Agreeing to be tested, the Castle opened a portal to the realm of Phlogiston, a half-fire elemental/half-great wyrm red dragon druid (20th level) [CR 47].  Morila and Zepe found that the dragon was just acting impressive and wasn't going to kill them.  It was a test of courage.  They were allowed to pass through to the realm of Strong Root, a female half-earth elemental/half treant druid (20th level) [CR 30].  Strong root told them that the next portal had a password and all the things in this realm knew what it was, they had but to listen.  Zepe figured out that the password was balance, using various clues about the layout and by listening to nature.  They passed then to the realm of Exclamor, a half-air elemental/half-androsphinx druid (20th level) [CR 33].   They found themselves in a blizzard on a tall mountain peak.  Exclamor told them that the next portal would open in 24 hours and they must survive the cold.  Zepe used elementals to bore out a small cave, and activated his elephant figurine of wondrous power, since it had a duration of 24 hours, to figure out when the 24 hours was up. They passed then to the realm of Tempestine, a half-water elemental/half-storm giant druid (20th level) [CR 35]. They had to swim to the next portal, which lead them through a series of riddles and puzzles.  Finally they reached a library.
Beyond the library was a book called "The Book of Grindill".  Zepe and Morila touched the book and was taken to the first age, to the original Oard.  Kar explored further and found out that these rooms were in the Fortress of Time.  He was chased by Time Lords and managed to escape back to Roland's castle.  He told Roland what was going on, but Roland could not gain access to these secret chambers (since he had not been tested, and Grindill only allowed that one group per generation could take the test).  Kar, Laraway, and Wulfgar were sent to go find Zepe and Morila.

Book 9  Kar, Sirranon, Laraway, and Wulfgar caught up fairly quickly with Zepe and Morila.  They wandered around the First Age Oard, a dreamy city with many peaked arches.  Spired castles floated above the city, and ships and elephants flew from the city to the castles above and back down again.  They explored the many sights of the city, visiting tall taverns and massive ship-building yards.  Zepe flew an Elvish spelljammer craft and they visited a large Elvish warship.  They visited a library and found out that there was a town feud between two noble families.  They also discovered a memorial fair was in town, one that showcased a historic victory against a horrible penumbral lord by the chaos lords.
They visited the memorial fair and saw the bones and relics of the penumbral lord that was defeated.  As they viewed the memorial, the pavilion was attacked by undead.  The undead army of two wights, eight zombies, eight ghouls, and two vampire spawn was led by a command group of five leaders. The leader of those five was Incunabulum, a human necromancer.  He was aided by Aoket (a mummy monk), Redbone (a wight assassin whose vampiric master was no more), an advanced Flesh Golem named Lord Carrion (crafted by Incunabulum), and Taliaferro, a human cleric of Wemusa Hob.  Using a darkness spell, the leaders ran in and stole the remains of the penumbral lord while Kar's party busied themselves with the minor undead, Lord Carrion, and Aoket.  Once the vampire spawn had the remains, Incunabulum ordered a retreat, but by then Zepe had taken control of Lord Carrion.  A female djinni named Jemera was caught up in the conflict and joined Kar's group.
They followed the undead with the help of the flesh golem, Lord Carrion. Kar's group caught up to the undead group in the catacombs of Oard and battled.  Sirranon and Jemera were killed by spells, but the end of the conflict found Kar's group victorious.  They found the penumbral lord's remains and returned them to the traveling memorial.
They met the proprietor of the traveling memorial, and he arranged for them to meet his patron, a chaos lord noble who served the Chaos Lord of Oard.  The proprietor also gave them a magical bouquet of roses after a minor misunderstanding with Zepe.  They were taken up to the Castle of the Galyna House, which was on the penultimate layer of floating castles.  They met the Chaos Lord R'usk Galyna, who had the aspect of a tiger, and who seemed to collect golems.

Book 12

Historians Note:  Books 10 and 11 are currently lost to history.  Should they ever be found, they will be added to this listing.

A comet which looked like a blood red claw appeared in the sky of T'bor.  Tharmus read the signs and received an omen that told him to watch for the time of Oleander Gates which heralded a time a great evil.  They then learned that 500 people disappeared during a summer festival the night before.  Investigating the disappearance revealed that the disappearance occurred in a grove of Oleander and that many of the castles in T'bor had these Oleander groves.  In the castle of the disappearance were ancient tapestries that showed young people dancing into the Oleander Grove and then exiting as old deranged people under the sign of a blood red claw.  Further research revealed that the knowledge of replacer technology and mecha construction came from the mad gibberings of the people driven insane.  While pondering whether to destroy the oleander groves Kar's castle was attacked by bile spitting Zombies! A series of Blade Barriers cut the slow moving Zombies to ribbons.

Kar searched the castle and spotted an invisible Elven creature in colorful garb.  When the creature noticed the he had been spotted he flew into a nearby Oleander grove and disappeared.  They decided to seek the advice of the Lord whose life they had saved near Oard.  Arriving at his Castle, they found the household looking for him.  Kar called for the major Domo, who told them that his master had traveled to fairyland to study replacer technology with the elves.  When asked why the house was being needlessly searched when the Dome knew of his master’s whereabouts the Domo realized he'd been caught in a lie and fled into a neighboring room.  Kar followed while Tharmus went to the hall to cut off his escape.

Kar discovered that it was no room at all but some sort of pocket dimension containing an Oleander Grove!  Five Ill-tempered Pixies blocked the replacer's path and invited him to dance.  Their charms were too powerful and the misshapen Kar began to caper about -- they led him into Oleander grove and they all disappeared!  The others, realizing that they had lost Kar, decided to risk their lives and journey in the nefarious dimension known as Fairyland. They entered into the Oleander Grove and began a dance of their own and soon found themselves in a field of Oleander surrounded by more Pixies who insisted on their surrender.  While Tharmus Leng attempted to find a diplomatic solution, a beautiful dryad appeared with several gnarled elves.  The dryad's beauty blinded Laraway, the rage mage, but Kendrick and Tharmus saw through it.  Tharmus uttered a powerful word that he hoped would thwart the dryad.  She succumbed to his spell and found that she had become blinded in turn!  Begging for her freedom, the Dryad restored Laraway's sight and ordered her Elven lackeys release the Pixies.  The Dryad had come from the Court of the Unseelie and knew of Kar's capture by the Unseelie Court she agreed to part peacefully if the heroes from Inzeladun would free Kar from the Unseelie court so that they would not benefit from his replacer lore!  The party readily agreed and, with the aid of 2 pixies (grateful for their release), led the way to the Unseelie court.

Through the forest, the group saw a large keep made out of interlaced foliage.  Their approach was apparently noted since a large array of Zombies was blocking the entrance along with a pair of mummies.  The gates of the keep were 2 ents!  Tharmus whipped up a storm of crystals which erupted from the earth -- the Zombies were obliterated and the Mummies moved out of their area.  One mummy conjured up a large area of magical darkness and the other belched out several swarms of insects which swarmed about several members of the Replacers.  Tharmus tried desperately to dispel the darkness so that the machinations of the mummy could be seen by the living but the fates conspired against him.  Others tried to deal with the insects swarming about them but found that mundane weapons were useless.  Kar moved about to deal with the second Mummy while Wulfgar approached the dark area and was about to plunge in to deal with the other mummy.  As Wulfgar approached the deep area of darkness, Kar yelled out to him because Kar’s magics allowed him to see things which Wulfgar could not.  “There are shadows in the darkness!”  Wulfgar cocked an eyebrow and thought Kar mad, “Laddy, it be dark.  How ye be knowin’ there are shadows in the darkness?”  Just at that moment, Tharmus was able to break the spell.  At the edges of the darkened area, there was revealed a host shadowy creatures and a ghostly form that spread fear by its very presence.  “Oh, ‘shadows in the darkness’, why did not ye say so, lady?”  Wulfgar was quickly surrounded by shadows as they drained his life force away.  Other shadows moved to hinder Wulfgar's companions.  Kar and Laraway dealt with one Mummy and Kendrick was struggling to keep a shadow at bay while being hindered by the locusts that still swarmed about him.

Suddenly, a divine roar of holy energy from Wulfgar sent most of the forms facing him fleeing into the surrounding forest.  Tharmus had brandished his mighty War Sword and rushed to Kendrick's aid.  A fierce blow sent the shadow off into the nether regions but mere paces away, Wulfgar was failing as the mighty Wraith struck another dire wound.  Laraway and Kar had the second Mummy on the run while Kendrick tried to hammer arrows into the first one.  Another mighty shout from Wulfgar cleared away the remaining shadows but was unable to sway the Wraith.  Tharmus steadied his nerve and charged the ghost form -- his blow was true and with a hiss the wraith returned to the land of shadow but not before striking the warrior heart with his cold grip.  Shaken, Tharmus was too weak to fend off the mummy as it closed and grappled him.  Kendrick's expert aim was able to pinpoint the Mummy as the two struggled, as Kendrick ignored the many biting insects that flowed about him.  With a burst of power, Tharmus broke free and Wulfgar and Kendrick finished off the dried emissary of the dead.

Kar and Laraway neared the keep as the Replacer's enhanced vision pierced the blackness within.  On a darksome throne sat a dazed elf maiden and behind her:  the grim visage of a Mindflayer who had survived the grave through foul pacts with demonic forces.  Kar had one opportunity to break the thing before it unleashed it's magic.  Gathering his magics to him, he evoked a spell of breaking -- the powers that animated the lich were ripped asunder and his rotten form slumped -- animated no longer!  The elf queen seemed newly awakened -- as one from dark and gruesome dreams and shank from the lich who lay upon her.  His grasp over her had been broken in his passing and she once more had her freedom.  She told of how the lich had imprisoned her and used her name to wreak doom in this world and others.

The group returned to the Unseelie Court where a festival was held in their honor.  They prepared to leave fairyland behind and the elf maiden asked if she could join them.  Her request seemed honest and so she was allowed.  As they returned to Inzeladun, they discovered that their adventures had once more shifted them through time and into the Second Age.
