ALCHEMY IN INZELADUN
"Throughout its history, the practice of alchemy offered many things to many people.  Physicians used it to search for cures for the ailments plaguing the people of their time.  Others, seeking riches, attempted to transmute lesser metals into gold.  More ambitious alchemists wanted what people have always wanted: immortal life, which they believed could be had by anyone who knew the secret of making the aqua vitae or elixir of life.  The most visionary of all searched for the philosopher's stone, the ultimate substance thought to cure any illness or wound, transmute substances from one form or another, and in some cases even resurrect the dead.
"Despite their varying goals, all alchemists held the common belief that there was a natural order to all things, and that those who understood this order would be able to alter the very nature of reality.  To achieve that end, alchemists bridged the gap between mysticism and science, studying and in some cases founding the budding fields of biology, physics, and chemistry as well as poring over various works of philosophy and religion.  Since an alchemist's ultimate goal was to comprehend the unexplained powers at the outer reaches of human experience, the alchemist's trade intertwined with those of the priest and the astrologer."

The Alchemist is the Fourth method of Arcane spell casting available in Inzeladun.  Instead of Alienism, Witchcraft, or Defiling, the Alchemist cast spells via science and chemicals.  A wizard who chooses this path can cast spells over 1st level, but each spell is essentially a potion that is made and prepared.  Each potion (dust, or whatever) is effective for 24 hours after it is made and the alchemist can only make as many potions as he has ingredients and spell slots for that day.
