Aleax (Template)
An aleax is an agent of vengeance employed by a god to punish those worshippers that have strayed from the path. It is the sole duty of the aleax to exact retribution against transgressors who fail to make proper sacrifices, stray from sworn alignments, or otherwise anger and invoke the wrath of their diety. As such, an aleax will never be encountered by chance. There is only one aleax for each god. It is a fragment of the god's own will, and it cannot be fully destroyed unless the god is destroyed.
An aleax is a form of celestial doppelganger, and will always appear as a nearly identical duplicate of its intended victim. To its victim, an aleax appears to be clad in a shimmering column of light. This color of this unearthly glow depends on the deity's alignment: golden for lawful good, deep purple for lawful evil, scintillating red-and-blue hues for chaotic good, and so forth.
An aleax will attack its intended victim as soon as it manifests, saying only that it has been sent by his god to punish him for his sins. It will speak no more.
Creating a Aleax
"Aleax" is a template that can be added to any intelligent being with a class level (hereafter referred to as the "base character.") It becomes an Outsider, and gains the subtypes of it's alignment.
Hit Dice: Same as base character. Do not increase or decrease to 1d8.
Speed: Same as base character.
AC: Same as base character.
Special Attacks: The aleax retains all the Special Attacks of the base character.
Special Qualities: The aleax retains all the Special Attacks of the base character, and gains the following.
Single Combat (Su): An aleax cannot be detected in any way by others, including magical means such as true seeing or othter detection spells. In addition, an aleax can in no way be fought by anyone other than its intended victim. This immunity extends to melee combat, ranged combat, spells, psionics, or any other form of combat or magic. Only the intended victim can see the aleax and engage it in combat.
Regeneration (Su): An aleax will automatically regenerate 1 hit point on the first round, 2 hit points on the second round, 4 hit points on the third round, and so on doubling each round until it is fully healed. If it is then hit again after fully healing, the progression starts again at 1 hit point. An aleax will only die if reduced to 0 hit points.
Critical Vulnerability (Su): Any hit scored against an aleax on an unmodified roll of 19 does double damage, and any hit on an unmodified 20 does quadruple damage. An aleax never scores critical hits on its opponent, regardless of its roll to hit.
Penance (Su): A victim killed by an aleax forfiets to his deity all treasure and possessions. The aleax transports all gems and coins are to the coffers of the closest temple to the victim's deity. All magic items owned by the victim loose their magic and become normal items (i.e. scrolls become blank parchment, potions become water).
In addition to the loss of all treasure, the victim looses half his experience points. The victim is then returned to life at the new level. The player of a multiclassed character is allowed to determine how the experience point loss affects his classes. If the loss of levels results in the character no longer qualifying for a prestige class, the character looses that class entirely.
Should the aleax loose the battle, the god transports the victim to his home plane to act as a personal servant for a year and a day. Upon his return, the victim regains all of his possessions. The magic items will be restored to their former power, and all coins and gems will be returned. There is also a 95% liklihood that the deity will grant an additional reward such as a powerful magical item, promotion to the next highest experience level and so on.
