Creature Catalog FAQ

Question
Why are the unique creatures so powerful (Primus, the Oinodaemon, demon lords, etc.)?

Answer
Because if you look back in 1E where they first appeared and compare them to the Solar, Planetar, Tiamat, and Bahamut you will see their relative power in relation to the aforementioned creatures.

In 3E the Solar can advance all the way to 66 HD. Tiamat and Bahamut were presented in Dragon as very powerful creatures. So, with that knowledge in hand, it would stand to reason that a creature that could stand toe-to-toe with them in 1E could do so in 3E.

For example, in 1E (and 2E) the Solar had 177 hp. In 1E Anthraxus, the oinodaemon had 233 hp. In 3E the Solar has 22 HD and can advance all the way to 66 HD. Doing a straight conversion of Anthraxus (assuming he had a max of 8 hp per HD) would yield a 3E HD of 29 (233/8). While he is more powerful than the average 22 HD Solar, he pales in comparison to the strongest 66 HD Solar. So, it would stand to reason that he, as a lesser deity of the daemons, should be more powerful.
