| Go to the local pharmacy and ask the clerk to help you find a bottle of Folate pills. They're folic acid. I take three pills a day myself for another ailment (cholesterol related).
Green leafy vegetables also contain folic acid so that's why the one doctor recommended vegetarianism. Also consider including lots of fish in your diet. Tuna is good if you like it. Fish also contains folic acid along with other wonderful things that will help.
I'm not a doctor, but thought sharing that info about folic acid might help.
