For me C&C accomplished this. Plus it allows me to use all the rules, ideas, modules, magic spells and items, etc... I want with great ease, from any edition of D&D.

There used to be a good adventure, or series of adventures, to be found in Dungeon magazine.
Kick butt adventures are always to be found from Paizo/Necromancer and Goodman Games.
Castles and Crusades is my fantasy game of choice.
