If it makes you feel any better, I almost forgot that as well when I was designing the class. Had I done so, they
would have had a higher AC bonus, and would have wound up being very, very broken.

Not Elan specifically; I just envisioned bards the way I've usually seen them played, and tried to design a class that would make that concept work.
