I think they're
both important. Both the GM and the players should be having fun. If you're in a situation where the GM and the players want different things and you can't or won't split up the group then you need to compromise. Telling the GM to bow completely to player wishes or the players to take whatever the GM gives them is a way to end up with a burnt-out GM or bored players.
Nobody can get what they want all the time, but everyone (players AND GMs) should get what they want some of the time.
