| Yeah, if you do not need it right now, I would also recommend waiting for Windows 7, which, as far as we know today, a big improvement over Vista.
When choosing between XP and Vista, much depends on what software you want to use.
Older programs might have compatibility issues under Vista, then XP is clearly the choice.
If you do not have such troubles, Vista is probably the better choice.
Doesn't your laptop (at least) have a recovery CD/DVD/HDD-Partition, anyways?
And what are you using now?
You probably don't have the hardware standing around without any OS installed on it, or do you?
