Allowing Tide of Iron with THW builds

From a flavor standpoint, knocking a guy back with a big flat piece of wood makes as much sense as knock a guy back with a big piece of metal.

Mechanics wise, while the debate between THW and S&B still rages on, I don't think anyone thinks THW is better than S&B.

So I say, why not allow Tide of Iron to be used with a THW? I think cleave and reaping strike are great at-wills, but for those who like tactical positioning tide of iron is a fun feat, and no reason to exclude the big sword wielders from it.

I don't think there's any balance reason to exclude it. I don't think flavor excludes it either.

I do think that an effort to keep different styles of combat separate and unique is an ok reason- shields seem to relate to a number of powers involving pushing or controlling your foes. So I'm fine with that.

But if things were otherwise, I can't see any reason to complain. Go for it.

I think it's better to leave S&B with something uniquely it's own and make up something that is uniquely THW... oh wait, it already has Reaping Strike and Power Attack.

Heh, yeah, I'd say, best if you gave S&B fighters full damage on Reaping Strike, too.

The thing I worry about with just letting a two-hander take Tide of Iron is that I suspect ToI+reach = broken. In particular, while it requires Paragon, a glaive, and a bit of MAD, ToI+HBO+Polearm Gamble is kinda sick. Add Spear Push for extra gravy.

I'd probably just let the THF do it 1/encounter as a "stunt". That way the S&B still gets to feel special, and you don't have to worry about the player springing any surprisingly broken combos on you (if they're the sort that likes to do that).

Or if they -really- want do it at-will, I'd say OK as long as they stuck to pure S&B mechanics and just reflavored the description (e.g. they use the numbers/feats/powers for longsword/heavy shield or whatever, but can write whatever description they please on the char sheet).

But... maybe I'd just allow it and see what kind of badwrongfun ensues. At worst they burn a bunch of resources on a fancy combo that looks cool but maybe doesn't do all that much in the end

I opened this thread to say pretty much this.

Reach + Push = uh-oh.

Cheers, -- N
