I just remembered an idea from long ago that applies to the idea of items becoming spontaneously magical... there is a concept that "perfection" is eternal. So on a critical performance roll you have a chance that any ritual might become permanent or create permanent side-effects (that may not exactly match the ritual but should be related)
It wouldnt be anything unique to the "becoming one with the sword" ritual, seems like a lot of possibilites there in.
