The huhhoad is a 3.5 OGL creature created by Ogdoad in roughly 2004. You are missing an "H", which is why your Google search is coming up empty. I think you aren't really supposed to know what it is as it is fairly obscure (which I suppose works for an extraplanar creature). Biomantic is more of a description than a template that is applied to monsters. They are in appendix B of the Complete...

Heh. Every time I encountered a table like that, I'd just figure out the dice to roll to get that spread. D12 + D10 + D4 - 2 and viola! 1-24. The curve got skewed a bit, but we were too young to even realize that. Now days, I still do it. I just don't care if the curve is skewed. :p

I read through most of this thread before realising that it was more than a decade old. (I failed my Perception check.) Then I decided to check if there is a more definitive answer to this question for 5th Edition. It turns out that googling "darkvision mirror" gives this exact thread as the first suggestion. So, for everyone else who may have ended up here hoping for 5th Edition advice, I'm...

You gain the following benefits: · When you successfully grapple a creature or escape a grapple, you may make a single attack with a light melee weapon you are wielding as a bonus action. Additionally, whenever a creature fails to escape a grapple with you, you may make a single attack with a light melee weapon you are...

I got into D&D during 1e. When I read the books, I misread hit dice and thought hit dice equaled hit points, so a 4 hit die monster had 4 hit points. Two things puzzled me at that point. First, giants and such were REALLY easy to kill for how highly the books ranked them. Second, why the heck did some monsters have 8+4 hit dice when they should have just told me 12?! I figured it out before...

I have the other opinion in these discussions, not having a problem running a fun and effective game at any level. We used feats; everyone had plenty of magic items; and at least one PC multiclassed. One PC was a GWM champion with a Defender greatsword that frequently had foresight cast on her. 1. I converted Age of Worms to 5e and ran the campaign from levels 1 to 20 over 3 years. We had a...

Of course 5e supports high lv play. You only need 7 things: A PHB, A DMG, a MM, a set of dice, a pen/pencil, a notebook, and your imagination. You do have all of those things, right? WoTC can sell you the first 3 or 4 of those. WalMarts got you covered for the pen & paper. The imagination? That ones on you. Official adventures top out around 11th lv? Yeah, that's intentional. As...

It occurs to me that, in general, mechanics may not be the best place to look for creating suspense in RPGs. As soon as you have a player doing math to see uncertainty or danger looming, they're out of the immersive moment, and dong metagame analysis - logical thinking - which isn't what you want when you want suspense, right? You want visceral thinking. I may not have missed it earlier in...

Which makes sense, except you then have the meta-issue of Luke's player deciding to quit before things get dangerous for Han. If they see these assets start to build up, the threat to his friends become obvious, and they are apt to stop before the situation gets so critical that Han ends up in carobonite.

IMHO, putting on my AD&D player's cap for a minute, it is rarely a good idea to waste time in a combat situation 'setting up' anything. There's a great deal of value in doing that AHEAD of combat, but once you're in combat the business should be to follow the cardinal rule of Musashi, who said "Every movement of the sword should be a killing blow."

I'm not a modron fan. Never have been. More or less hate them, in fact. The only way I've found to use them is to alter what they are. (For instance, in one of my forthcoming campaigns, they're basically the Borg, trying to convert everything into a purely lawful, static state.) But... If this is the direction WotC's going, I'll look to see what they do with it, and I'll either use it or...

My reading of FATE Core is that modifying story details DOES require an Aspect. This can be against your own characters aspects, or against an aspect of another character (NPC or PC) or an aspect of the scene, including one introduced in play. Stunts I'm not so familiar with, but given that the build process heavily restricts their availability I'd consider them to be intermediate between an...

There has long been a self-defeating loop. "There's no support so we don't play it, so they don't design it because no one plays it." Mordenkainen's Tome has a bunch of new high level monsters with more than just hit point stuff. There are also a number of iconic monsters just in the MM that have Legendary and Lair actions that are quite enough to challenge a group of high level characters in my...

I appreciate how much Primus is being featured in 5E. He's gone from just being a godlike ruler of Mechanus to a being capable of taming Limbo, creating maruts that are as powerful as demon lords, and being an authority that even Asmodeus must answer to. In my personal setting Primus was created by a god called the Prime Architect to take his place.

The original Monster Manual didn't have experience point values for monsters killed. That information was in Appendix E of the 1E DMG. In the far-right column, under "XP Value" it gives the xp base and a variable for how many hitpoints the monster had. Example: Orc 10+1/hp. So an orc with three hit points would be worth 13 xp. However, we thought you somehow gained hit points by killing...

To a extent you seem to be missing my point. Charm person makes the target your friend, but what people are willing to do to their friends differs greatly. Bob, upon hearing his car was being stolen from his friend, might ask his friend to try to get a good look at the thieves... because he can't leave his post. Sam, upon the same situation, might run to look. Tim might assume it is a...

Unless the player has declared their PC is looking for secret doors, then their passive perception isn't looking for secret doors. It's assumed that the default is that PCs and NPCs are alert for dangers, but not looking for secret doors, traps, treasure, or whatnot. DC 10 passive absent...
