Can you show me where I've done that? I take a lot of flak because I don't automatically agree that everything every DM does is automatically right, that's true. But, where have I argued that DM's will abuse their power and act in bad faith? There's a difference between not thinking that sitting in the DM's chair makes one completely immune to making mistakes and treating DM's as if they...

So to bring this back around to the original topic (which was "how to improve Inspiration" and not "why your particular problem with Inspiration isn't valid")... ad_hoc: How does this work out, in practice? How do you prevent it from being abused? Like, I could imagine someone with the Ideal of "Survival" wanting to get advantage on every single saving throw... I'm asking because I...

In the Sherlock Holmes' books there are references to Sherlock being an excellent pugilist because he could out-think his opponents. I think the Robert Downey movie version also had this. Sounds like an interesting home-brew but I wouldn't hold breath for anything official.

I have a couple issues with the way inspiration is presented in the rulebooks. The first has already been mentioned. It's how the way the mechanic is used doesn't match what's implied by the description, most notably the sentence about the Beggar Prince. It just seems sloppy. Second, and I think this is more important, DMs should be encouraged by the rules to put their players' characters...

I hope this was meant tongue in cheek. There are lots of things I dislike about 5e for which I haven't come up with any great solutions. Does that mean I shouldn't say, "Hey, I don't like this aspect. Anybody have any ideas?" For example, I've yet to see a flawless solution the the "problem" that whichever of your Dex or Str is higher renders the other one irrelevant. A character with 18...

Switching sub-classes of a class can be tricky, as the selections you made for the first sub-class may become greyed out, but not reset. Even if the selection is greyed out, the generatot see it as a valid selection and it will affect other things. If you are switching sub-classes, it is best to reset everything related to the first sub-class before selecting another sub-class. So, if you start...

Agreed. If you want to knock out an opponent instead of kill it (or the reverse, depending on what's been set as the default at that table) then such should be declared before the to-hit roll is made. This reflects the fiction where the attacker is making the decision to strike for subdual before taking that attack. This assumes the townsfolk will kill them. Of course, the other most likely...

No, I don't accept that we should use a derogatory name on them just because the concept has had different names across different RPGs. It's like calling HPs or AC a gimmick, because it also has a lot of terms in different RPGs. If you want to call them a neutral name, go ahead. But don't pretend you're just giving them a common name and not putting them down when you use the term gimmick. ...

Since there is no exotic weapon proficiency in 5e, I may be inclined to grant it along with martial weapon proficiency. I may be more inclined to give proficiency to those with the dueling fighting style. Using the shield as an off-hand improvised weapon would negate the damage bonus of the fighting style for...

I have an Eldritch Knight with the Ritual Caster (wizard list) feat. There are 2 ritual spells on both the cleric and wizard list. Detect Magic and Gentle Repose are on the cleric list, but he never prepares them. However, they could occasionally have proven at least mildly useful. Can the cleric teach those 2 spells to me during downtime days so I can have them in my ritual book? It's...

In Fate, you have to use your Personality/flaw/ideal (traits) in order to spend a fate point. You don't have to keep track of why you got it in the first place but spending it has to be 'in character'. So, you might gain an Inspiration because you have a 'greedy' flaw. (Maybe you stole someone's money pouch which almost got you arrested.) You can spend it on anything you want but it...

Definitely Dread, for its core mechanic that pogre mentioned. A good horror story should build tension over time, and Dread does it better than any other game I've played. Seriously, ya'll should check it out.

Lorenn flew off on his board and by the time the others were working their way through the pass between two icy peaks, he'd circled most of the double-iceburg island. It was a clear day and very cold when exposed to the higher air currents. The sea reflected the sun and was very bright - the stark white of the iceburg brighter still. His eyes grew sore from the glare and his nose grew red and...

If I'm reading this correctly, one of your complaints about Inspiration is that you get it for, say, roleplaying your character, and then 10 minutes later you get to spend it on, say, an attack. And it can be a pretty tall order to connect the two in the fiction. It's pretty weak (and just uninteresting) to say, "Um....I think back to how it felt when I let my greedy side get the better of me,...

My gaming buddies have never been the type to get into horror games, outside of Chill for a while in the 80's. Nobody is interested in playing a scared dude, they want to go on the offensive. When horrors would threaten they never said "oh my lets run" it was "Oh hell no, get the shotguns".

Well it is the single most important monster in the single most important fantasy RPG of all time. I'm surprised anyone downvoted it at all. :D But then again, someone keeps upvoting Fiends for some reason so I'm kind of at a loss.

A counter to this tactic is to grapple or shove the dodger to move him away from the choke point. Dodging doesn't help against ability score contests, just attack rolls.

I'd play with any of them. The main reason I participate in these threads is to see how different people think about their games, so that I can adapt myself to play with more people and be familiar with more systems.

I don't know, it isn't SO bad. You could play a dissociative identity disorder champion, where one personality has not killed and the other stands aloft waves of butchered folk. Your champion character would have a pet T-Rex that has been backgrounded, possess a motor bike that may be stolen, and there'd be a 50% chance his/her father is a murderous psycopath (which make sense given your PC's...

You could do the die roll + proficiency bonus. It's a modest bump that would make it hurt a lot less if the player rolled a Nat 1 on his recovery roll.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this upthread in my earlier post. I also award inspiration as a reward for things that don't earn xp. See, to me, xp comes from activities that include danger. I prefer to reward social encounters, puzzles (but not traps- those I give ad hoc xps for) solved, or the like with inspiration, rather than xp; it's a tangible reward, yet maintains D&D's...

I went to a Viking Ship museum while I was in Oslo in the spring. Can you tell? BTW... If I gave the impression that you have arrived at Oyaviggaton, I shouldn't have. This is just two very large iceburgs in the way that have joined, blocking the best straight journey with a mile of valley pass between them. The plan is to reach the sea on the other side.
