I would agree in general that heavy armor should be available for starting characters. If you want cost to be an issue, some form of masterwork is a better way to go IMO.

So, two nights later for our scheduled session, while the characters were traveling to another locale, I had a meteor crash into a nearby mine. Most solo encounters are much weaker in 5e then they seem on paper because of the disparity in the number of actions a single creature gets vs. a full party. I wouldn't use your hatchling - it's a bag of HPs that if it hits does minor scratches, to be attacked by everyone else in the party and worn down quickly. Unless it stays far up, in which case the ranged characters will be the only ones...

To be blunt, with very few exceptions (Malazan, The Expanse), every RPG campaign/setting I've created, played in, purchased, read, or heard about has been pure hackery when judged on even the most forgiving literary standards. And that's fine. The only bit of it with any real merit, and the thing that sets RPGs apart, is what the players do, the stories their characters create in play.

This is a combination of guidance from the DMG and DM tendencies that seem to be common - but there are a lot of games that end up differing quite widely from this tendency.
