Weird. But I got started with D&D and D&D CRPGs rather than the types that had hundreds of levels and hundreds of hit points of damage per attack. So for me, 20th level is just where levels are supposed to stop. I also think 5e's DMG handles epic levels better than any other edition. You can choose exactly what benefits you want. You can increase your hp, attack bonuses, skills, etc, or you...

I normally stick fairly closely to the original design parameters, but this one might actually work very well for the OP under two conditions: 1) The important theme is warlock (preferably single-classed) focused on a staff, rather than the official Pact of the Blade 2) The OP is okay with the character splitting up their damage between two adjacent opponents The combination negates the need...

The way it’s written, it seems like the Zhent leader was acting on his own. He wasn’t sent by anyone higher up. He just seized an opportunity that presented itself (that is, he used the excuse of offering the town protection from marauding fire giants in order to set up camp so he could pursue a personal quest).

The rules are fairly clear on this even if they do allow for some DM discretion Under Hiding If the halfling pops out he can be seen clearly. You don't remain hidden just because at one point on your turn you were hidden. However there is an exception a few lines later. This seems pretty clear to me. What those circumstances are will vary from DM to DM of course but I would...

I'm a big fan of OD&D, though in never played the original. A few years ago I started exploring the OSR and really fell in love with three games - AS&SH, Swords & Wizardry, and Delving Deeper. They all hot certain buttons for me. AS&SH was so much like the AD&D of my youth, the simplicity of S&W grabbed me with its flexibility, while Delving Deeper (which I don't hear enough about) is an...

As a GM, the hide, pop up again to fire needs the rogue to *move*. If you hide behind a small object and stay there, foes still know your location! There is no surprise. Besides, if the fighter is adjacent to the enemy the hiding is not needed.

I think any situation involving grappling will require at least some common sense. Take for example a human grappling a brown bear. A brown bear is large vs. human that is medium. A human could grapple it in the sense of holding a limb or perhaps a choke hold. However, there is simply no way a human is going to move the bear as part of the grapple. It is more likely that the human will just...

I played in a Shadowrun story, in which the PCs came across the tail end of a firefight between two strong groups. We finished off the survivors, and found a LOT of useful items. It was the GM's way of giving us an immediate power boost, but with ensuing complications. What if the PCs arrive just in time to break a deadlock and tip the victory towards either of two sides? Right, she treated Trinket like a friend to be protected above all, rather than an expendable resource. Travis probably would have played a better Beastmaster Ranger on that count. I think it would be perfectly reasonable to just give it (as a houserule). I also think the Ranger should get access to a Ranger-only feat that grants an additional fighting style. Possibly as a half-feat with a +1 ability boost. But of course that runs into feats being an optional rule issue.

Some people would suggest that making the focus of chargen being good at something, rather than being a character which is realistic to setting, or being a character that produces an interesting story, would be min/maxing.

I think at some point the size might be too big, but I'm thinking grappling a medium size dog vs grappling a small dog for relative sizes. Assuming they are both as fast and roughly as strong, it seems to me that the small dog is going to be easier to hold simply because you can grab a greater percentage of dog. Of course not applying any penalty/bonus and simply following the rules works...

That is - i think obviously, where i stand or sit. Your usual length jump and the jumps you can make on the run with no chance of failure and no action spent as just a part of your move up to your feet in strength etc (per chap 10) are "usual length jumps." leaping further than that - attempting to do so - requiring an athletics skill check with chances for success, failure and setbacks is...

Mind Spike is the go-to offensive divination spell. But out of combat divinations tend to be cast as rituals, so don't qualify.

Mearls (and I think Crawford) have said they will be conducting another survey this year (I'm guessing in the fall). They are waiting until they have the results of that survey in hand before they move forward. AD

My groups have rarely "booted" anyone per se, but we have specifically not invited a couple of people back. In most cases, we try to set up a meeting at a neutral location for new players, like a Starbucks or Barnes & Noble, etc. to meet and get a feel for the person's personality and manners. In one case, the prospective gamer came across as so "weird" that we did not invite them to our...

Hmm - I think I would go with advantage if the grabber is a size larger and disadvantage if there's a greater size difference than that (because relatively tiny things are hard to catch :) )

I was just going to say the same thing. I had a grappler in 3.5 that was completely broken even at fairly low levels without even trying. I wasn't the only one, it didn't even take a great deal of system expertise or min/maxing. Whether or not grappling being so inconsequential in all but a few edge cases in 5E is personal preference of course.

Start by naming them, and I don't mean "Bobo" or "Meatshield". Next, consider what their role is in the party, beyond "He'll watch the horses". Does the Druid's animal companion scout for the group? Does he/she/it have a real combat role? Does the Wizard's familiar scout, carry touch spells in combat or provide a flank for the Rogue? Realistically, if you never make use of them,...

Hi, I DM'd a 5e session set in Eberron. Things didn't go as planned (as they always do), so I instead let my players have a long sandbox session in a metropolis (Fairhaven, for those who know Eberron). At the end of it, they entered a haunted cathedral. Turned out the cathedral wasn't really haunted, the screams and ghosts were all illusion magic. Then they found the magically hidden...

So... she did damage based off of her magic bow, magic bowstring, and Hunter's Mark. The fact of the matter is Trinket could have been a bear following the party with no mechanical ties to her class, and she would have been better off. And I agree with you, people love a pet story. People might go for the Beastmaster Ranger despite it's flaws. That does not excuse it's flaws. I don't see how...

Here's what I meant in the OP, in case we're derailing a bit: Succeed/fail: rules that set up a dichotomy of A) get what you want or B) suffer pain or boredom. As in, "welp, I failed my Caster Level check, so my level 13 Invert Monster spell just did jack and squat to my opponent. And I'm not allowed to do anything else besides talk until my next turn." Or "I just failed my Detect Traps...
