So in 1e henchmen gained experience points for killing things, but other NPCs didn't? Dunno. I never said that they had to be 10th level exactly. I said 10th level or so. A king's champion is probably not going to be a single digit level putz, though I suppose 8th or 9th is possible. Kings have powerful enemies, so they need powerful champions. Up until 5th edition(or maybe 4th....

I work on my setting as a hobby and I'm not just talking about prep for an upcoming session. It's my way of "playing" when we're not actually playing. As a result, I have layers and layers of things going on all across my setting at any given time. The vast majority of this work will never be seen or noticed by my players and I'm okay with that. It makes running campaigns within my setting all...

Levels in themselves are weird (and "gamey") because of the way they group together, and homogenise, various elements of human capability. Ability scores are similar in this respect (eg there are at least some human beings who have good reaction times but don't actually move very fast, and/or have poor balance; but in D&D these traits all tend to track one another via DEX). But it's especially...

Perhaps the former, but certainly not the latter intentionally. Then again, you made a reference to "dissociative mechanics", so we are probably playing two very different games, and are unlikely to agree. So maybe we'd best just leave it at that.

Very true. I've had it in mind, but never fully codified it, that non-adventuring NPCs can slowly gain levels in a class just through spending years at doing what they do; be it lab mage, street thief, stay-at-home temple cleric, militia or guard, or whatever.

You might not have passed your own reading comprehension check there. The rule explicitly allows for an improvised weapon (e.g., a shield), to the extent that it is similar to an actual weapon (e.g., focuses impact on a flange or rim like a mace), to be treated as such for its damage die and type. The DM may then, at his option, allow or disallow the application of the proficiency bonus for that...

I don't think you'll find me saying that. The process of authoring a RPG is (obviously) different from the process of authoring a book: most obviously because the audience is also the author, and there is both the real-time dimension to that and the consequent lack of editing. I think Galahad is an excellent example. On a slightly related note, on of my favourite things about 4e is that a...

It depends what's going on both in the fiction (given the established fiction, the framing of the (failed) check, etc, what sort of thing might happen next?) and at the table (what were the players looking for from the check? what was at stake?). Maybe in the crime lord situation, the lead they are talking to suddenly collapses - dead, poisoned! That could easily make sense if (eg) one...

So, you and the others talking about this do realize that the rule you quoted about any physical/visual similarity is only to determine if you add your proficiency bonus or not. It has nothing to do with the amount of damage the improvised weapon will do. The damage die is fully up to the DM to decide, as far as I can tell. A table leg being similarly shaped to a club means you get to add your...

And they still aren't really relevant to the setting, at least them being planeswalkers isn't. They could just be any other named NPC. The only real reason Jace is important is because he is the living guildpact, he could be just a regular person in Ravnica instead of a planeswalker and it wouldn't really change anything foe this book.

When you convert sorcery point to spell slots, regaining half of them on a short rest is roughly equivalent to the wizard’s arcane recovery ability (actually, arcNe recovery is a tad more generous). So half sorcerer level rounded up sounds about right for me. this makes the 20th level capstone ability less enticing, but if you’re willing...

Probably All Flesh Must be Eaten and associated Uni-system games. I also like Bureau 13, The Laundry, and Deadlands. I'd like to try Esoterrorists or Night Black Agents.

I really enjoy the built-in tension the tower brings to Dread. It is my "go to" system for one-off horror scenarios. I have not been particular successful in maintaining a true horror campaign. I have run Cthulhu campaigns, but they always seem to fall apart - at least the PCs do.

So it’s nearly Halloween. What horror RPG (or setting) is our go-to? Cthulhu? Dread? Ravenloft?

No for both? You randomly said yes for something. I was previously referring to cosmic firm and ability scores from portfolios and now cosmic firm and ability scores from divine templates. If thats the case whats the benefit for Absolute and Supremacy besides Ac and Bab

And I truly believe everyone got fixated on the one sentence in the PHB rules section about damage being a d4 if the object doesn't resemble a weapon and that everyone forgot to take the context of the section in consideration.

Feedback version 2.28 Beta 8 Sword Bard On the Start Tab: 1. The sword bard is supposed to be proficient with medium armor at 3rd level. However in my 20th level sword bard test build, on the Start tab it was listing all medium armors as Not proficient. 2. In the Character Details column, the bard college feature (fighting style) lists all of the fighting styles despite the fact...

I ran across a dual list of the most powerful and the weakest D&D monsters throughout the various editions, and - not to spoil anything, but it's not really that big of a surprise - the poor little duckbunny's being singled out again for his lack of combat prowess. Here's the link: https://www.cbr.com/powerful-dd-monsters-and-weakest/ Duckbunnies frequently show up of lists of "Stupidest...

A thousand times: THIS XP are the default mechanic for establishing a reasonable time to quantum up. They work fine as a meta-mechanic. But get really awkward when viewed as a simulation of anything and even worse when applied off-screen

Chapter 221 “Let’s just stay calm,” Konstantin said. The wizard was alone with Bredan and Xeeta in one of the small meeting rooms. The dwarves had almost had to be physically separated by the Apernium guards, who had been drawn either by Darik’s shouting or by some subtle alert from the wizard. The two emissaries had allowed themselves to be escorted to a waiting area, though not before...

I have been reading through the Planeshift articles, especially the Bestiaries to get an idea of what to expect from Ravnica's Beastiary. The way they are organized is heavily by type. So there would be an sections on broad Angel, beasts, demons, horrors, undead, giants, and more particular creatures. With in each section are a over view of how these creatures fit into the setting,...

Feedback version 2.28 Beta 8 In this build I started off selecting sword bard, but then switched to lore bard. When I did the switch remnants of the sword bard trait remained and would not disappear. This is shown on Character sheet 1 in 2 places: 1. active features still has the defensive, slashing and mobile flourish. 2. my Fighter 1/ Lore bard 6 is showing 2 attacks per action when...

Surina rushes forward and throws her javelin true, killing the rear kobold (K4) in one shot. Perin fires at the one next to him (K3) and he drops as well. The forward kobolds do not seem to notice this until a bolt of fire whizzes past K5. They turn and start barking orders haphazardly to one another. The one on the west side of the road rushes toward Surina with his shortsword. The other...

Some of my favorite works of sf/f involve unusual politics and social structures. The Nehwon stories by Fritz Leiber, the Bas-Lag novels by China Mieville, the Majipoor chronicles of Robert Silverberg, the Viriconium stories of M. John Harrison . . . For my roleplaying game campaign I prefer players who are either fellow-libertarians, or simply interested in politics even if they don't agree...
