I run a hardcore sandbox, so I don't use the encounter building design guidelines at all. With that in mind, the party included: Buford (fighter 9) Windsor (wizard 8) Karn...

There has been discussions on how to represent weapons like the longsword (the historical one) that were very agile and fast, with a fighting style based around versatile weapons. Nothing really successful stood out. Sentinel and PAM trigger a lot of AoO and that could add to a lot of damage.

To answer your other question: Your scenario with Sharpshooter looks a little problematic (and rather reinforces zardnaar's position that the feat is broken), and if it concerns Hawk Diesel, I think a decent solution would be to reword Swift Strike to give an extra melee attack, only . . . which...

It probably doesn't. A monster's CR is determined by 2 parts - it's damage output and its damage input. To figure out its damage output, you figure out its average damage/round by adding all the damage it does over 3 rounds, assuming it uses its best attacks, and that it hits every time (or its targets fail every save) and deals average damage on each strike. Now, I don't actually know...

Why? It's the mechanism that the TWF style and the Shield Master and Polearm Master feats use. In fact, it's the standard mechanism for doing something extra. I've thought further and this could be abused with Sharpshooter. Are you comfortable with a first level character doing 3d4+12+30 HP damage in a round? (Assuming an 18 stat.) That's one attack with the weapon, the second attack thanks to...

Sure it doesn’t work for every day of an adventure but a good number of days in the adventure can be like this. Let’s call them “adventuring days” ;) Meaning if you’re going to have action encounters it’s best to bunch them up into a single adventuring day. Exploring a tomb/dungeon: easily an adventuring day. Taking a long journey? One day (or more) just sucks and has all kinds of trouble,...

It does seem a little odd for the second save to also be a Dex save. You're not really dodging or trying to avoid something coming at you. You're trying to shake off magic that has already hit you and affected you. I could see Con, Int, Wis, or Cha to save against this. Like, are you going to jump out of the stone that you're partially made of? I mean, everyone wants to only have to save...

Aye, but I believe what Harzel was suggesting was that the writer took the text from one of those monsters, but then when deciding to change the first save to Dexterity (because ray!), the writer swapped the followup save to Dex, too - and that's the point where Harzel is "accusing" the writer of not thinking too hard. Also, add me to the list that thinks the followup save should be Con.

It _can_ be an edge. Group init means several NPCs go at once and with only one roll there is a reasonable chance they will go early in the round (and a reasonable chance they will go late....both of which can really effect the difficulty), while the PCs have a greater chance of splitting up. Let's say you have 6 orcs vs 4 3rd lvl PCs...so a "hard" encounter. If zero or one PC goes before...

I also tend to shoot from the hip when running games, but there are answers to many questions if you know where to look and find it worth the bother to do so.

Yes. The DM has to provide a reason why the PCs can't rest. Resting invites more danger or loss of precious time or some such. It also, IMO, requires a bit of player buy-in. So the longer it takes us, the more our allies suffer...we're low level, low on...

From a narrative perspective, that's a lot of things to happen in one day. I think one of the things about the 6-8 encounters is that the encounters, individually are a joke, but it's an attrition issue, you take 5hp here and you take 2 spells there and after 6-8 encounters that's 30-40hp and 12-16 spells! But I mean, I think what this really goes to show is how 6-8 encounters work best...

OR it's D&D physics, which loosely approximates real world physics. D&D physics loosely approximates real world physics all over the place. Hell, during 1e Dragon put in articles on how to make D&D physics more like real world physics.

Hey Dragonfly, the project looks great, I was wondering, what system would you recommend to use with the "Superverse" for novice younger players and is there a recommended group size for these adventures or can they be scaled?

What does ".a loose approxiation . . . simulating in a loose manner" mean? You and Lanefan are saying that D&D uses real world physics. But it's measure of terminal velocity is different. So either G is different, or the way friction works is different, or . . . it's not physics at all, just common sense tropes!

Again with the deliberate refusal to see that D&D is just engaging a loose approximation of real world physics. So what if "terminal velocity" occurs at 200', rather than 450'. It's a game. It doesn't need to match real life exactly. Simulating physics in a loose manner is just fine.

This is incorrect. You are allowed to tur into one of the four specified creatures - which are all CR 5. It is not saying you ca turn into any elemental - just those 4 specified ones.

I guess, maybe, if I was feeling merciful I’d have had about half the goblins able to be woken in time. Ultimately I don’t see any issue with the ruling. The heroes pushed themselves beyond their means and chose to engage an entrenched enemy with an unknown number of reinforcements while low on resources.

It's the same as other forms, so your Druid level divided by 3, rounded down. CR 3 at level 10, CR 4 at level 12, etc. I am wrong.

Glad it went well. A few more tips for next time based on my own experiences: (1) Pass out large index cards for each player to put his character name on. That will help both you and the player. (2) If possible, begin the story 10 minutes into the adventure with some narration explaining why the characters are there and have gotten together. This is a good way to "hit the ground...

This is an entirely different question though. This is a question of cost to have it available rather than cost to use in play. People here are arguing that it isn't worth it to use it in play. I think that is wrong. As for whether it is worth taking, Sorcerers and Tome Warlocks do like it more because of their greater selection. With 5 or 6 cantrips the character can have 2-3 attack ones...

The key is for the players to to know that there could be more encounters. Even if the day ends up being shorter than average, the long rest classes will still have most of their abilities because it could have been longer. As for narrative, we just have the rule where if it isn't safe then no long rest is possible. It has to actually be safe. So no long rest in a dungeon unless, for example,...

xangpow started a thread Elemental Wild Shape
The search function for the website seems to be broken so I will just have to start this thread. I apologize if this has already been talked about. When a druid from the Circle of the Moon reaches level 10 they get Elemental Wild Shape, which means they can spend two uses of Wild Shape to turn into an elemental of air, fire, water or earth. But what kind of elemental can you chose from? By...
