I don’t get why you would ban advantage from cooperation. If I need to change a tire, it’s a hell of a lot easier and faster with a second person. When someone wants to help another character in an out of combat task, I ask them what skill they will use. If it’s appropriate, then they get advantage. It’s obviously easier to move a stone if two people are pushing it, so if the secondary...

We use the Revised Ranger, but I tweaked and modified it quite a bit to be less crazy. I still need to make some changes to it, because the beastmaster companion has survivability issues; my player who loves Rangers and pet classes ended up retiring the character entirely after a while, because the pet just isn't able to survive long.

First I'd talk it over with the group. If they're on board? Then I'd invite the guy over for a beer & a gaming chat about his/your styles of play. If that went well I'd extend a limited invite - say for the 1st few lvs. After that the group would decide wether or not to invite him back for the next few lvs.

So let's look at your hold person example... They shoved someone, then moved, got held mid-move and ended their turn... How is that a "problem" if its "a shove action (bonus action) and move then turn interrupted" but not a problem if it were "a shove action (attack action) and move then turn interrupted"? It's a net result of the same exact set of events in the game world with the...

I used and modified Sean McGovern's Curse of Strahd guide (it's online but paid for the DM Guild version, it was a good investment). I'm not attaching my full notes but here's some materials: 1. Oh, there's even more. 7. Random magic item selection was great for getting scrolls - randomly generated, so maybe not so useful for the average wizard. But it was very hard on wizard-based items for virtually everything else. Wands were rare, bracers of armor were rare. Aside from the scrolls and potions, the most likely items on the list were martial oriented - weapons and armors. 8. Wands...

I usually tend to use 1 HEALTH mooks that rarely even have SOAK. They are only there to give the players something to do on their way to the actual enemy NPCs with full stats. I also use those for something like spawned creatures or a deployed drone swarm. They are meant to be distracting or slightly annoying but not really dangerous. Often enough they have a good DEF though, so not to...

I modified the explorer feat to kick in for "local terrain" after 24 hours in an area - getting the lay of the land - plus your chosen terrain. So you will have the current terrain pretty favored after just a bit of time. Beastmaster - when not ordered, it's an NPC ally and will act as GM determines. The "order" cost gives the player hard control of the NPC. Other than that - as is regular...

Just no. It's nothing to tell the player to roll to avoid getting hit, as well as rolling a "to hit" in another situation. This argument of the TH vs ... is a false dichotomy. One doesn't have to prefer one over the other, people can handle some granularity in the game. Life is like that too, it is why simulation is often good as it is intuitive. Roll To Hit - natural. Roll to Dodge -...

Thanks Morrus. When you say one hit kills a minion do you mean any hits or a hit that does damages above Soak ? I assume its the latter to give effect to the NPC's armor. I think this could work but I was thinking alternatively to use the lowest possible health points per die (1) instead of the average of 3.5. So a skeleton would have 7 Health rather than 24, making it much faster to...

Re advantage and disadvantage - in my PAR if you could apply feature ABC to "make me less likely to get hit" you can do so under PAR. If not, not. So, in your use case, if inspiration could not be used against enemy to hit rolls, it cannot be used for your AC rolls. In other words, it's about what is being done, not whose hand the dice are in, that determines what modifiers can be applied to...

Since working together means a huge improvement in the chances of getting the job done, players will be inclined to approach every situation as a group, instead of trying to solve things by themselves. It helps to keep players engaged when their characters would not have any other meaningful contribution to give.

I have a theory that this is deliberate. WotC has a history of doing this with MtG. They make crappy cards in order to make the good cards stand out, because if every card is good, nothing is really good and good becomes the new average. They may be using the same philosophy with spells.

Turnstile: "a strong character could rip it out with a successful DC 24 Strength (Athletics) check" TftYP P75 21. Stone Block: "can be pushed by the combined effort of up to four characters with a combined Strength of 45". Such obstacles are common in the average dungeon.

Not by name. However, in 5e "you can draw a single weapon as part of your move". Thus a throwing weapon user could throw the weapon in hand, then draw and throw a second with the "extra attack" feature. However, a fighter would not be able to take advantage of a third attack unless they where duel wielding or had the duel wielder feet.

Pnumadesi Player's Companion Undead: No trees of any recognizable family grow inside the Elemental Plateau, and the fallen simply rise as undead in almost no time. This latter situation may show a closer connection to the underrealm instead, but historians are torn as to whether, in fact, both the overwhelming presence and the lack of any presence of the underrealm has the same net effect on the...

Eldritch Horror will support up to 8 players. It is a Cthulu-themed co-op board game, a simpler version of the Arkham Horror game that came before it. There are a lot of components, mostly stacks of cards, but the play is intuitive and flows quickky once you get the hang of it. You never feel like you`re waiiting for your turn because you always want to see how the others fare and if you may be...

Yeah, we're not going to get into any gaslighting nonsense which tries to hide that toxic backlash. There's no place for that here. Keep the topic on the upcoming movie, please, folks. I'm not allowing another flamewar about this topic here.

Hey, feel free to try to gaslight us all you want, the record is pretty clear that there was a backlash of men offended that the franchise was going to be represented by a “gimmic” of women instead of men. We’re just not going to fall for it.

As you can see, I'm really not a fan of martial classes being resource-dependent :P I think I'll keep the idea of Momentum but give it to the Battlemaster to fuel its maneuvers instead (once I find what could give Momentum, that is). I dont really mind the Monk, I think it works well mechanically, but I feel the thematic/narrative is a little too niche. Since I gave up the idea to use the UA...

I don't remember who it was but someone said they had a group where the highest str was 10. It was in this forum in an earlier thread on the same subject. Could have been Hussar or maybe Harzel.

Ah yes, I missed that. Sorry dude, I hate killing PC's even in games that are meant to be dangerous and deadly. Looks like I misread the object interaction rules - just re-read them. For some reason I thought that having a tough interaction (like the stuck lever in the PHB example) required your action, which it does not, only a STR check. Treating dragging a character like a grapple just...

Since the DM is the one that decides on whether a roll (whether with Advantage or not) is required, I'd say this is a non-issue and therefore it definitely misleading to state the Help action is definitely broken.

Part of my post was illustrating how the DM did not appear to make it difficult for the players. The spider was never spotted, there was 3 or 4 opponents in most of the 3 area effect spells, even one spell which was readied and could have done virtually nothing if the NPCs had performed different actions. With a different DM and/or different rolls, he could have also done 20% of the damage that...

Lunysh identifies the apparition you encountered earlier as a ghost. She also recalls that ghosts have a frightful moan special attack. It is just past four so you have a little less than two hours until you are to meet Audrahni at the Creekside Tavern and Inn for dinner. Randolf speaks up. "Well! I have learned never to turn down a free meal. She said she wanted to buy all of us dinner. I...

IIRC the Romulans were supposed to be a stand-in for Communist China and the Klingons were the Soviet Union analog. During the Romulan conflict neither the Federation nor the Romulans had video capable FTL radio so all contact was via voice or text. No one had seen a Romulan until the incident. Of course "Enterprise" threw that all out the window.

Oh, thats a load of nonsense. I watched that trailer and before I saw it I was genuine interested at the idea of a new GB movie. I couldn't give a damn if it was an all ladies or all men cast. But after watching that trailer, with Leslie Jones loudly screaming at the screen, I was so put off by that film. I'm sure I am not in the minority for having that opinion. That trailer was absolutely...

Kickstarter’s February initiative, Zine Quest, promises to feature a variety of RPG zines to crowdfund. Since its announcement, we’ve been gathering requirements, talking to publishers about the projects they’ve planned for February, and written the first in a series of articles to raise awareness. To that end, we spoke with the project’s originator, Luke Crane, Head of Games @Kickstarter and...

I think the DC already considers having advantage on pretty much every check. That's why "medium challenge" translates to a DC of 15 rather than 10. It's not broken, but instead a particularly smart implementation: Your players will be happy because their smart approach to solve the problem gave them advantage. Also, most of the time succeeding at something outside combat is more enjoyable...
