Emerging from the bottle, the Phase Rider ... … Seemed to blur into the glass orifice as it intangibly passed through. A strange mechanical gallifreyan noise grew louder and quitter, louder and quieter, louder and quieter until the wondrous ship phased out of this reality. Images blurred. The giant barbarian and the cleric distorted both viably and audibly. The space around them grew dark and...

I agree it needs an update, but is it a good idea from a business stand point? I strongly suspect Paizo has given the question some serious thought, and has good reasons to stay with the current edition for now. First of all, creating a streamlined, more simplified version risks alienating their fan base, who are, for the most part, really happy with the game. PF fans may not be happy having...

So how dependent is this build upon your DM? I mean, seems like if the DM doesn't put you in a lot of situations where you're able to surprise the enemy then you could lose that surprise round crit damage.... how effective will this character be in combat with the nova damage? I think you'll still get advantage the first round as long as you roll well on initiative (and there are enemies who...

I like option B, with a couple changes. I'd have the attack roll made at advantage if the foe was targeted (not necessarily hit) by the spell the previous round. And I absolutely would remove the idea the spell ends on a miss, even on the first round.

Several reasons... 1. Familiarity - Pretty much all of video gaming is built on the D&D foundation. It's easy to get into because most people have already experienced its rules in some form. Its setting is also very accessible since it is a relatively unspecialized fantasy world until you get into settings. If you try playing Numenera you have to learn everything from the ground up, if you...

The latter. The Ready action only appears under the list of "Actions in Combat" on p. 192, which says "When you take your action on your turn, you can take one of the actions presented here..." Readying actions isn't mentioned in any other context, so there's no reason to think that it can be done outside of combat. Stealth and the Surprised condition are the mechanics for determining the outcome...

You can't Ready an Action outside of combat, so the question is moot outside of a few exceptional cases. If the PCs want to get the drop on the approaching enemies, then they should Hide. Then you can resolve things as usual with Stealth checks, passive Perception, etc.

I didn't say it was released, I said it was wasted. The spell is consumed when you complete the casting. If you decide to hold the energy in your hand, that's at your peril. You're right, the rules don't overtly say until the end of the round, you still only get 1 action, and 1 reaction per round, and then it resets. Just like a fighter who readies an arrow at the door, when his turn comes...

One option that I've seen work well in other games is: Abort-to-Dodge. When an enemy that you can see attacks you or forces you to make a Dexterity saving throw, you can Dodge as a reaction, but then on your next turn the only action or bonus action you can take is to Dodge. You must declare the Dodge before the attack roll or saving throw is rolled, and the Dodge applies to the attack or...

I would say the RAW is not clear on this. It does not specify WHEN the spell slot is consumed, so I think it is reasonable to rule that it's consumed when released instead of when initially cast. It also does not say that you automatically release the spell after a round. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, as other readied actions also shouldn't work that way at all. "I ready an action...

People who notice their coin purse is suddenly missing could cause all sorts of a ruckus you could take advantage of as well, although you'd probably want to spread this out so you don't build a negative reputation following your party.

That's a lot of reading, and most of it is unnecessary. The problem with casting a spell and readying it as a reaction is, they have to release the spell by the end of the turn, or the spell is wasted. If the observer was a spell caster and understood what the cleric was doing, they wouldn't have to cast counterspell or dispel magic, they can just wait for the round to be over and see if the...

Most DM's (this one included) find a lot of value in the 1e DMG appendices. The 5e DMG did a pretty good job of replicating some of that, though it is not as expansive.

It jives with Tolkien, though. We don't have any way to survey all of the different fantasy worlds, but I'd wager that many of them take their cue from Tolkien in this regard. The early Monster Manuals all seem to assume it. It's not until you get into specific weird setting, like Forgotten Realms, where they begin to change their tone at all.
