You are mistunderstanding what construes an assumption. It's not an assumption to raise the possibility that the DM and player may not be on the same page regarding the PC's deity/patron/oath when initiating play and that this can only become obvious later into play. An actual error of assumption in this case would be assuming that the DM and player are on the same page when play begins. And my...

AKA, if the DM doesn't agree I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue? :hmm: If you have to use mental jujitsu to justify a ruling, I'm going to disagree. The simplest, most straight-forward ruling is almost always the correct ruling in my games. It's bracers or archery, casting spells isn't using an archery skill. In any case, the opinion of the posters on this message board don't...

Yeah, I'd have to say no to that. The reason being, the title of the magic item is bracers of archery. If you're not firing an archery weapon, it doesn't apply; since casting a spell isn't even an attack action, there's no argument, at least in my eyes. That being said, would I allow a player to fluff their eldritch blasts as magic crossbow bolts from their magic crossbow? Sure. Just no...

See above reply to Hussar regarding convenience. The 1e Cleric is the better comparable here - it has to be answerable to its deity who gives it spells every day, but its presence almost never limits party composition and it doesn't have the magic item limit. Should a Cleric who tells his deity to sod off still receive spells? No, it doesn't - I was once again simply trying to take your...

Yes, that was the idea. Plus, this subclass doesn't get much oomph other than more "spells known," so I feel like they are already behind the wizard in some respects, and giving them double the recovery felt fine. In hindsight I should have probably phrased this ability similar to Arcane Recovery to make it really clear that it was double-strength.

Depends on how you're adjudicating it. When you call a locksmith for your car, your car isn't in a dungeon, there isn't the possibility of a trap or monster lurking in/behind the lock, and the locksmith knows where he's sleeping tonight. For most locks, the locksmith can take his time in a generally relaxed atmosphere and has as many retries as needed. Done deal. And, yet, locksmiths do...

Except I'm coming at it from a 1e perspective. We don't have to worry about warlocks but we do have to worry about paladins and clerics, and these things are very much a balancing mechanism. And even if it's not, as you assert for 5e, there's still the 'convenience' factor to consider. When signing up for a class such as cleric or paladin or I suppose warlock, or an exotic race such as...

Yeah, believe me i know. In games i run, the number of players that makes for a good game varies with campaign. If its a setting thats primarily team based group play, then 4-6 is what i find optimal for our 3-4 hour sessions as long as we stick to our up-front parameters of no solo stuff thats not very brief at the table. If its more internal drama and social focus (VtM, X-Men, Serenity)...

The base AC is 14 + Dex (max +2) so it only goes up to 16. It is deliberately identical to breastplate -- dragons can't wear armor, so they get a decent medium armor, for free. Unfortunately that's not such a great deal for someone who wants to actually dump Dex down to -1, which I think should be as viable for dragons as it is for fighters/paladins etc. I just can't bring myself to give dragons...

I don't let players call for rolls at all. My method has layers declare actions, the DM determines yes, no, or uncertain outcome. If uncertain, the DM calls for a roll. In all cases, the DM narrates results. Rinse, repeat. On topic, this helps greatly with guidance spamming -- since players are declaring actions openly, that's when a guidance caster would declare casting guidance -- ie,...

What system are you talking about? In 5e a warlock is less flexible than a wizard. And at least notionally balanced, assuming 6-8 encounters in the "adventuring day" (the fewer encounters, the less powerful the warlock relative to the wizard). There is zero reason to think that the relationship is a "trade off" for power. And even if it was - how is it a "trade off" to have the PC bossed...

Common sense within the setting and its practices. When it seems appropriate folks buy new clothes. They key difference in this and backgrounding is, there are not some players who get to meta-game opt out of clothing getting worn, dirty, treated as out of place etc because the did some meta-game-erasure dance. What is tracked, what gets responded too, etc is the same for each character and...

Aaaactually, a +1 weapon only has the same requirements: "You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon." Using it as a foci still means attack and damage rolls made with it. As does chucking it at someone, say as an improvised weapon.

Maybe as films yes, but as it relates to D&D I think the Hobbit was more influential. FYI, there were at least 3 Miyazaki films on the list.

Have a Glyph of Warding that casts Spike Growth* if the party fail to make a secret hand signal, or say the passphrase. It's not much, but will burn up time and maybe a couple of spell slots to disarm, or dispel the spikes. *or your preferred AoE spell.

The issue I take with this is that you and chaochou are debating this from a story now perspective where the DM is not the primary story driver. I have tried to be explicit in my posts of how different the games run from your traditional D&D to a Story Now approach. You will always get some DMs that are more forceful than others. There is a range. In fact when the PC played a warlock in my...

    1. Did they came off a long rest and burn through all of their resources on the young chuul and skeletons? If so, they need to figure out how to last longer. There are several adventures in the future that stretch the heroes to the breaking point. 2. Did they go back in the fire tomb and rescue Sheena? They will need someone to provide teleportation services. 3. They should learn about the...

Boots are different from horses are different from motorcycles are different from handkerchiefs. You're the one who asserted that motorcycles are relevant but boots not. Why? You're the one who said that in some games nothing is backgrounded? Sneezes, urination, etc are all things that - in such a game - I would assume not to be backgrounded. If in fact they are backgrounded, then it's not...

There is Zone of Truth, but as a 1st-level spell it's not really powerful or fool-proof. I would rule that spell detects lies not falsehood: A spell/item that would actually detect what is intrinsically true/false as someone speaks it in words would be fun, probably more fun than a spell that itself just told you the truth. But then, why casting it on someone when you could just...

What it it is a long flexible piece of wood with a cord attached. You can do lots of things with it. You could use it (unstrung) as a walking stick - historically authentic, you could wave it in the air to cast a spell (if you have a class ability that enables that), you could use it to shoot arrows at a target, you could throw it on a fire as fuel. Only one of these uses is called "Archery". ...

Yes. A party of four 3rd levels likely has as many hit points more HD similar armor classes and with four characters worth of actions plus likely healing then the hag is almost certainly little threat long term. The biggest ability is the invisible but that is more escape or delay than offensive. But faerie fire or web or tasha (iirc) or many other spells can mostly end her romps in...

Yes it is. Rape, cancer, death, war, sexism are all serious issues are you saying people are not allowed to make jabs about them? I do concede, this is probably not the best forum, since I'm not familiar with the posters and everyone has different levels of sensitivity, so for that I apologise. By the same token I can call out your comment as implying that they wouldn't hire a person of...

With his ghost snakes, the Goblin Shaman became the primary threat for the group thought Enseth. "Combat Priority One: Enemy Spellcaster. All other priorities rescinded." Enseth's shoulder opened and multiple light darts flew to their target. Action: Cast Magic Missile at level 2. First...

Let me begin by saying that the parameters in IRON DM are each intended to challenge the contestants in different, often synergistic ways. No single parameter is less important than another. A competitor may be tempted to squeeze in a few (or, letís say, forty) extra words and gamble that the strength of the writing and ingredient-weaving will carry them through. The reason that is a gamble is...
