Mister Bubbles disembarks quietly, standing near the boats for a few moments to listen. The eerie silence seems unnatural, but not necessarily unpleasant. The half-orc turns to his companions and shrugs. He opens his mouth, but then closes it again. It seems wrong to break the silence, somehow. Perception I guess Mister Bubbles can be second or third in the marching order. Just behind...

Actually, to be honest happyhermit, I'd say 5e is doing quite well on the world building front. There's what, 15 books for 5e now? Other than SCaG, none of them are much rooted in world building. Now, I do have an issue with the amount of world building that is in 5e core - particularly the Monster Manual which I find mostly useless to be honest. All the bits and bobs about this race being a...

Wilhelm frowns. Someone is ringing that bell as if his life depends on it, perhaps calling for aid. Moving around the church, the warlock moves about looking for the entrance. He meets Fareon and Wolf, who obviously came to the same conclusion. ”Who’d you think is making that noise?”

What's the point of PF2 if casters end up as OP as in PF1? Luckily for us (but maybe not for Paizo) we have 5E. It has proven beyond a shadow of doubt you can create a game with better class equality AND still have popular casters. It would be very sad indeed if they go through all this trouble and STILL* fix none of 3.0s endemic issues; caster supremacy and spell dependency being one of...

Being so focused the words exchanged do not register, but when the strange tentacle appears, the dragonborn prince knows it is the bigger threat. Realizing that battle against it would only stand a chance if they all attack it and seeing none of the others do so, Aanzu lets go of his battle...

The true solution is to have rest frequencies vary depending on the needs of the scenario. The default 1 hour short and 1 day long rests suit many but not all adventures. You can have an intense dungeon where 5 minute short and 1 hour long rests work better. And any long ocean voyage or desert trek needs 1 day short and 1 week long rests. If even that - you could ban long rests...

On the Paizo comments a lot of people are annoyed that classes get less than PF1, less class features and have to pay feats to get them back. The counter argument is that you get those feats instead of class features, just meaning you can chose how you want your class - rather than stuck with what is written. The same applies to races/ancestries. Either argument aside it does seem that all...

Sigh. Yet another "designers don't need to make monsters beefy, all they need to do is up their INT which makes it totally okay to offload the entire task of making the monster work onto the DM" No. Just no. A high INT is no magic wand that excuses anemic monster design elsewhere. The stats is what makes its CR. If high-level heroes rip through the monster in a single round that CR...

I find deities are one aspect of world design that will, if allowed, inevitably expand to fill any available space plus 10%. You think you've got all the deities you need, and then the party find a new culture which would logically have its own local deities; and even if these are just reskinned deities already written up elsewhere you've still got to write them up again in their reskinned...

Methinks you are tilting at windmills a bit here. There are all kinds of materials out there for all kinds of RPGs and while D&D does get looked down on a lot in some circles, there is exceedingly little in way of "that shouldn't even exist" or even "that type of game is objectively bad". Certainly not any masses such as they are in ttrpgs. New ideas have always been allowed in "the hobby" even...

GFB + Shillelagh is a nice secondary option for a celestial tomelock, and comes at little opportunity cost. But I would use it as a secondary attack, with eldritch blast as primary. No advantage to being a hobgoblin though. As for leveraging hobgoblin, I would make a war mage, use the bonus weapon proficiencies for Glaive/Halberd and Longbow, and use the Booming Blade + Polearm Master + Spell...

The problem is, when you put it this starkly it reads as if the DM is not allowed to insert anything of thematic interest to herself, and has to bury or deny any interests she might have. But then you say this in the next post: So the DM can have influence on the players' stories but not insert any story of her own? Hardly what I'd call recruitment-poster material for attracting new DMs. :)...

All standard narrativistic games are "story now" in the Forge sense, but not all "story now" games are standard narrativistic ones. As far as thinking about PbtA goes, I am the faithful student of Campbell. The "standard narrativistic model" is about scene-framed RPGing. PbtA is not scene-framing - I don't have a terrific handle on how best to describe it, but Campbell has explained it well,...
