    If your using Unarmored Combat with a 16 dex and 14 wis your AC is 15 and not likely to rise anytime soon.     Crawford didn't say they would not address the known issues with beastmaster rangers. He said he won't be offering an alternative version of the class. Not the same thing. And as many people in this thread have mentioned, just a few things like new fighting style and some new spells can go a huge way to fixing it, without the need for an alternative anything.

    IMO the very first session should be a PC building session and if possible the 1st level adventure. By this I literally mean everyone shows up with pad and pencil and start talking through and rolling up PCs right there, with the DM lobbing in ideas.     I'm giving your character the benefit of the doubt that they do their best when it matters. Would you prefer to jump fewer than your Strength in feet across this gap? Now you're just being pedantic. I assume competence on the part of the characters. That includes knowing when to conserve energy and when to spend it. That's part of doing the best you can.

    Because of maximum effort. Again, the rule says that your strength determines how far you can go, and then proceeds to tell you how far you can go in the jump rules. If they don't use maximum effort, they aren't going to go strength distance. It's only auto succeed because of the maximum effort.

    If the distance is so short that you don't need to roll, I don't think it can possibly qualify as dangerous: you literally can't fail. If the distance is great enough that failure is a possibility, I absolutely agree that they'll use maximum effort.

    Sure, I'd go with the concept of a 'soft' fighter who only disables and disarms his opponents. I'd think that the great variety of ways that happens in a Jackie Chan movie is probably amenable to simply playing your 'monk' or whatever and flavoring the results correctly. Not that a disarming move wouldn't work well with that of course.

    If their best effort isn't needed anyway, it doesn't really matter if they give it their best effort or not/ This isn't something I've ever said would happen...? I didn't say characters try to jump as far as possible whenever they jump. I said characters put in their best effort at all times. Your best effort to jump 5 feet looks pretty different than your best effort to jump 50.

    But you're comparing straight stats to a build that has Feats. Since you no longer need Polearm Master or Moderately Armored, include two ASIs in the Monk build. Also, with a variant Human and taking Resilient at 1st level you could have one 16 and three 14's (plus a key saving throw proficiency). Or possibly take Defensive Duelist.

    True, I had a mind slip there about using DEX instead of STR for monk weapons but that only applies IF your not wearing armor. Which means if your not putting enough into wisdom to have Unarmored Defense make up the difference its not worth it and it means you need to get dex up to 16.     If by 'player base' you mean 'players' then just say players, player base has a different meaning. 5e is story-driven, as a roleplaying game should be.     Bringing Critical Role into this discussion in this way is odd, as watching Laura Bailey play a Beastmaster no for hundreds of hours is a pretty good anecdotal case study on that subclass (very fiddley and doesn't work the way she wanted it to, but she still dominated mic of the time).

    OK. I hadn't noticed read aura before. Think I understand how it works now. Detect magic allows you to determine if magic is in a certain area, and at lvl 7 you can narrow that down to a 5-ft square. Wooh! LOL Then you use read aura on everything in the 'area' until you determine the item(s) that are magical. Then... you can use Arcana or its equivalent to ID the item you have found. ROFL....

    Just describing my preference. I've put in a lot of work to homebrew my style of game into 5e. I've added more tactical depth and flavored some monster abilities so they didn't feel like bags of hit points that cause damage. (Taking a few notes from Matt Colville.) Running three 5e campaigns, and maybe it's easy to see why the whole thing just seems...boring.

    There is a difference. There are no rules for combat where you automatically hit by trying to. There are rules for jumping an automatic difference with ""I try to clear the 10-foot pit (goal) by jumping over it (approach)." The jumping rules kick in and you go your strength in distance.     If you give a DC every time they say "Hey, I just want to roll athletics to go farther," they will do so every single time they hit a jump that is longer than their base distance. That means that going farther isn't going to be unusual, it's going to be the norm. There's no reason not to try to jump further at every single distance that's longer than automatic.

    One level of Monk would help with the Quarterstaff idea, at the price of going even more MAD. That would both make the staff a Dex based weapon and give you a bonus action attack (synergy with Hex), while also giving you an armor boost (depending on how much you invest in Wisdom).

    If the meaning was not added by the failure, then the failure was not the source of meaning. That's what the formula demonstrates. Don't just lie. The only example you gave was the spear throwing ogre one, and I demonstrated how the failure has a cost in that example.
