I imagine the warlord class like a martial adept from 3.5 Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords with maneuvers from the school of the white raven, and I would add the monster subtype "squad" with a gameplay close to the swarn monster subtype.

Yeah they're referring to the bounded accuracy of the game. Ability modifiers go from about -2 to +5, and proficiency, advantage, disadvantage and other modifiers adjust a d6 you roll and either add on or remove to your roll. I'm not sure that the bounding itself is a barrier to high level play as abilities, hitpoints and spells can keep upping the game, even if the numbers don't get...

I did run Bonds with my group, though to avoid metagaming and spoilers I excised a decent chunk of his backstory from his character sheet. Maybe it's my fault. On the bright side, I got to invent and then hint at Stanfield's former relationship and failed sinister plans with the Red Contessa, which led to her long vendetta with him.

The reason Dodge isn't taken more frequently has little to do with its tactical benefit. Players like dealing damage, and taking the Dodge action tends to reduce this. I feel that Dodge's best (and most underutilized) use, other than blocking a choke-point, is while at range. All too often, I see melee PCs Dash forward, trying to get to the enemy while bombarded with arrows or whatever....

I think gold as a reward had its uses in previous editions. It was tied to XP in the first two editions. The next two editions had a magical item economy. Now in 5e it seems mostly a vestigial remnant of a bygone era. Sure, you can spend thousands of gold to build keeps and such, but that's not really the focus of the heroic action game that D&D provides. After the first few levels, after...

My group uses dodge frequently. Usually when they lure the monsters back to a choke point and the tank can block a doorway or narrow passage, or station themselves over difficult terrain combined with forced movement to make melee enemies attack the tank or waste their turns trudging through the terrain. The only downside to their heavy use of tactics is often letting runners escape.

The end of Act 2 has to execute in a very specific way, so the PCs can't discover too much too early about the voice. But, he's still a neat presence in the Unseen Court book, and it's neat to meet him in Book 3. Contrast him to...

The tactic you describe of letting PC's fall before healing them is a fine resource preservation strategy but it does greatly increase the chances for PC death. In my experience resource starvation is typically not an issue. Instead people dying to focused damage while more than half the team sits at full hp is a bigger issue.

Below are the Lore You Should Know videos on Ravnica, covering all guilds, and one on Ravnica Monsters. The ones on Monsters and the Orzhov and Dimir are the the newest. Bria looked downwards in sadness, staring at a patch of dark stone for a few quiet moments. This had always been a possibility, in truth it had been somewhat assumed. Now though, she had what was near enough to confirmation. Her eyes shifted to meet with Gimlak's then. "An accident. Of all the possible endings... I pray it was swift." A small smile was offered to Zemryn then, "If only it...

You are poisoned and have the Drained 1 condition. Next stage is 1 hour from now so you don't have to worry about it getting "worse" too soon. But.... Still need a new Perception check from everyone. Also, we are getting close to the end of this adventure. Start making 4th level characters for part 2. Details for char gen are in the RG thread.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Going off your answer I think we'll just rule it in the most beneficial way for the player. He's making an artificer/seeker and it's surprisingly difficult to make an effective build as both classes were largely overlooked by WotC. Also, kinda unrelated but thank you for making such a great product. I'm eagerly awaiting my hardcovers.

A bit of an observation, the edition war was between 3e and 4e players, yet somehow the grognards won? I think lowkey is up to something. Not exactly correct, but partially right for the wrong reasons at least. I mean I think that WotC is in the best position to give us a good quality list and stuff to make gold worth it, in the same way I think they can give us a good warlord. However...

I'm listening to a Stan Lee interview from 1991 on NPRs Fresh Air. He said James Cameron was about to direct a Spiderman movie. That would have been awesome. He also talked about his real name, Stanley Lieber, and why he changed it.

She thought she had it, but the tumbler was a fake; a trap. "Aoow!" she said as the pin bit her. She was terribly embarrassed for thinking she'd had it. Then she felt her vision blur and her head spin. "Not again!" she thought to herself. Oh. I thought the DC was still 15. Oops. Ouch.

Agreed nice for Warlord I approve though I think Battle Ready could also be just any fighter. So those who opt for Strength get their favored secondary as initiative (and its barely more than a tweak) Yeh I think both of these are minimal fuss modifications, I even like the Battlemaster name being a pretty fair synonym of the "War" "Lord"

Dausuul If you look at the conjure X spells, the lowest level is 3rd (same as Animate Dead). So I think that is realistically the lowest level you could go to summon/create allies in combat. This is why I think a Necromancer needs a 2nd level spell for a 1 HP minion. Additionally, I agree about animate dead. The spell should allow creating small or medium humanoids, but it should allow...

The small chest holds its own for a few swings until one attack hits the hinge just so and then the top is quickly turned to kindling. Inside the chest you find a well-made crossbow, a feather, three arrows, two scrolls, a wand, a vial of liquid, a collection of rare inks and powders, a series of related books, a small bag of gems perhaps, a small sack of coins, the Star of Desna, and an...

I find the Complications rule to be poorly designed. I'm sure some math person will correct me, but it roughly equates to a 25% chance of a major mishap each month, where "no profit" is about the best case scenario. Three of the six options are more or less "lose your ship"... this is fun how?

I considered having them use Intelligence instead of Dexterity. Or something like Investigation/ Perception checks. Instead, I opted to give them the choice of adding or subtracting Int, which gives them more of a range, and lets them decide where they want to act. Which adds a quick decision element that feels tactical. I do like the idea of adding a new fighting style! It's also be a...

Except for exactly what the GC stat block says: “On a successful save, the creature can choose to be pushed 5 feet back or to the side of the cube. A creature that chooses not to be pushed suffers the consequences of a failed saving throw.” Being pushed is not a move (nor is it something you do to yourself). Or are you telling players at your table that they have 5 less feet to move after...

    Greenfield replied to Pellet bow?
I think the big one could have been made to work. The only change needed would be to change the one thick cross arm into several layered cross arms. It's essentially the multiple bow you've illustrated, but with the "bow" part made of several layers. Think of closely nested parentheses. ))))) The bows would be so close that they'd slide on one another. The single bowstring or stone sling...

In case others haven't seen this, there's a UA article for ships and the sea here. Looks pretty straightforward. At first glance, it was a bit odd that ships have ability scores (int, wisdom and charisma are 0) where a ship’s Strength represents its size and weight. Dexterity represents a ship’s ease of handling. A ship’s Constitution covers its durability and the quality of its construction....

Let them celebrate their astute following of the advice they were given. Tell them how difficult things would be if they didn't have crampons etc. Give them their success, but the gear doesn't solve all the problems. After the PCs have passed an easy check or two throw the dragon's pet Rust Monsters at them. They did bring spares, didn't they?

Thanks! I don't think specify enemies turns is the 5e standard. The Marilith's reactive trait states: "The Marilith can take one reaction on every turn in Combat." Though not the same as what I am doing, I don't think I need to limit it to enemies turns either. I will think about it though. Yes, I actually like legendary actions quite a bit. However, as I have been working on...
