Let's say I'm a 6th level wizard. My moon's in High Sanction. I now count as a 7th level wizard for the purposes of spell-casting. I don't get to learn any new 4th level spells, but I do get the extra spell slots associated with a higher level spellcaster, and I can cast my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells at 4th level if I am able to do so (since I have a 4th level slot). Let's say I'm a 7th...

ToA isn't really very high fantasy - in fact it can be pretty gruelling both in the jungle exploration section and in the (quite deadly) tomb itself. And you aren't really saving the world, just the elite 1% . in any case, it should be simple enough to change the background reason for the adventure if you want.

My problem was merely in remembering that it had been broken out from the general "make stuff up" vibe that permeates the game (and is not exactly foreign to RPGs in general, of course), categorized as an 'Action' (and that Fate had any formal 'action' at all, for that matter) and given a name. In 5e D&D creating the advantage of Advantage by stealthing up on your victim most certainly...

That night, you warm yourselves around a fire, eat a simple dinner, and exchange pleasantries. Kamala tells tales of her homeland, while Valea regales you with the adventures of her youth. The next morning, you head out for Dalarath. Around noon, you suddenly hear a buzzing sound. You look over at Kamala quizzically. "Yes, I hear it too," says Kamala. That gave me another thought. If the whole point here is ease of use to allow for narrative freedom (alongside a meaningful choice between the tiers of armor), why are we sticking to tiered proficiency based on the heaviness of armor? If light, medium, and heavy armor are to ostensibly be a balanced choice, it makes as much sense to gate away heavier armors from some classes as it does to gate...

An excellent strategy. You travel north, at a steady pace. The first day passes uneventfully. The dunes meld into an endless sea of sand. You are grateful that you are with Q'al Shariff, who seems to know the route like the back of his hand. You can tell it would be easy to lose oneself in this scorching, unforgiving desert.

Death in RPGs is one of those things that sits between the game and simulation aspects of D&D. To tie it to the story being told together, I think that has to be something the player embraces and adds to the tapestry, not the DM. It has to be the PC sacrificing themselves to hold off the monsters that have all but defeated the party, or the PC taking a hit in place of their comrade. It’s no fun...

5e has three main types of D20 rolls: Attack Rolls, Ability Checks, and Saving Throws. Initiative is a Dexterity Ability check, all skill checks are Ability checks, all tools are ability checks. Even though Saving Throws and Attack Rolls usually use an ability modifier for part of their bonus, they aren't ability checks.

One of the more overlooked traits of this edition wasn't anything specific in the rules but how the game was presented to the audience through the eyes of game designers. We were constantly treated to behind the scenes looks at why things were being done the way they were, what the design goals were, and how the designers think. It treated the game as just a game, and I think the engine as a...

The way I see it, druids are unconcerned with alignment stuff. Nature covers both the soothing rain that brings life to the land, and the hurricane that tears life from it. It's both the mother wolf nursing her cubs, and the same wolf savagely tearing into its prey. Some druids are good and some are evil, but neither is inherent to being a druid, and thus their magic doesn't much care either way....

In Cortex+ Heroic the action is not called "create an advantage" but rather "create an Asset". Otherwise it works very similarly to what Aldarc describes, with two exceptions: (i) only one Asset can be used at a time; (ii) an Asset doesn't adjust the result but rather adds a die to the pool. As well as Asset's there are stunts (bonus dice triggered by spending points) and resources (bonus...

Yes, the only way I would wreck the ship is if there is a high probability of commandeering another. The slaver ship in this case. Edit: Unless they fail the skill challenge so hard that they wreck it, not me.

In Imaro's defense here: in Fate fate points can also be used to power powerful stunts. So you are correct that if you are spending fate points for the +2/reroll or declaring a story detail, then you are invoking aspects. But there is another channel for fate points in the form of stunts. These sort of stunts are rare and up and by far not the primary mode of spending fate points, but they do...

He got better! :D 3.5 That is not my experience. If a combat encounter's CR is equal to the average party of the player, they'll be alright. A character only dies if their health drops below -10 HP, which takes a while.

While players choose what they want their armor style and materials to look like, the following rule of thumb seems to be in play. LIGHT ARMOR • full fabric armor (arms and legs too: boiled leather, padding, layers, fur) • light helmet (face uncovered) MEDIUM ARMOR • metal armor

I've played plenty of D&D using 2nd ed AD&D NWPs (the same mechanic is also found in the DSG/WSG, and I've used those too). I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. They're fairly weak descriptors, with a poor relationship to PC build rules, masquerading as a resolution mechanic.

Yes and not. The PCs are allowed to travel to the time spheres, something like the hollow earth from Mystara setting. This allow traveling to the past, but without changing the true present and avoiding time paradoxes. Sometimes if the changes by the chrononauts or time-travellers are too big, then a new time timeline is created, or little details are changed but not changed, like...

That's a weird thing to say. If you've only ever played auction-and-trick card games (bridge, 500, etc) and then play blackjack, you skill at remembering played cards might still help you but you're going to have to learn a lot of new stuff. The skills a player gets from playing Caves of Chaos and Tomb of Horrors and White Plume Mountain are going to be of pretty modest use in a game of In a...

A PLAYER death? Ouch, that's tough! ;-) Umm. what RPG system do you use? In D&D it's impossible to remove the potential of character death from a 'fairly balanced combat encounter'. E.g. in 3e a single lucky crit roll will do it. In 4e it usually requires a string of unlucky saving throws, e.g. vs. continuing damage. And in earlier editions even a single failed saving throw can result in...

I get that. Considering that. I guess when thinking about reallife, a shield is highly effective, it is just that it seems highly cumbersome too. At least here, the +2 shield makes sense, but with a max Dex punishment. My gut instinct is that a shield feels like ‘medium armor’. So one would pretty much never see a rogue or monk with a shield. Normal people benefit alot from a shield. But...

I agree about the former, but not about the latter: A character dying out of the blue because he didn't bother to check everything for traps is not something I enjoy*. I prefer it, if death results from combat encounters; ideally meaningful encounters. I don't fudge die rolls, so characters will occasionally die through no fault on the player's side, but I vastly prefer if they're forewarned...

I'm a big fan of 4e, but I didn't care for the Essential classes. I felt it was a mistake to stray from the 'perfect symmetry' of classes they achieved by using the AEDU framework. To me, it felt like the solution to a problem that didn't exist. An anecdote I always mention in this context is that one player in my group who had never played anything but fighters and paladins in earlier editions...

Üngar shied away from the main festivities, lingering at edge of the crowd to watch intently as people enjoyed themselves. The smell of brewed yeast and hops antagonized his nostrils and he found himself gravitating towards the bar, and the half-orc who was busily quaffing the liquid of his curiosity. "I also drink," the dwarf signaled, and proceeded to match draught for draught with the...

I am still experimenting to find an ideal mechanic. But one thing is certain, that hitting zero hit points hurts. Those are the lethal wounds, and if survived, leave a scar of some kind. Where zero hit points is a threat to ‘life and limb’, it may result in physical damage rather than death, such as the impairment or even loss of a limb − at least a fatigue-like condition. I also want to...
