I use blade ward all the time on when playing a Blade Pact Warlock - mainly to make Armor of Agathys last longer, or for situations where you expect to be in a fight very soon. If you can manage to cast it just before initiative is rolled it's perfect. Usually this means casting it just before the character kicks open a door and steps into a room, etc. I've also used it on a Tiefling ...

From a narrative perspective, that's a lot of things to happen in one day. I think one of the things about the 6-8 encounters is that the encounters, individually are a joke, but it's an attrition issue, you take 5hp here and you take 2 spells there and after 6-8 encounters that's 30-40hp and 12-16 spells! But I mean, I think what this really goes to show is how 6-8 encounters work best...

What does ".a loose approxiation . . . simulating in a loose manner" mean? You and Lanefan are saying that D&D uses real world physics. But it's measure of terminal velocity is different. So either G is different, or the way friction works is different, or . . . it's not physics at all, just common sense tropes!

Again with the deliberate refusal to see that D&D is just engaging a loose approximation of real world physics. So what if "terminal velocity" occurs at 200', rather than 450'. It's a game. It doesn't need to match real life exactly. Simulating physics in a loose manner is just fine.

I guess, maybe, if I was feeling merciful I’d have had about half the goblins able to be woken in time. Ultimately I don’t see any issue with the ruling. The heroes pushed themselves beyond their means and chose to engage an entrenched enemy with an unknown number of reinforcements while low on resources.

(2) If possible, begin the story 10 minutes into the adventure with some narration explaining why the characters are there and have gotten together. This is a good way to "hit the ground...

The key is for the players to to know that there could be more encounters. Even if the day ends up being shorter than average, the long rest classes will still have most of their abilities because it could have been longer. As for narrative, we just have the rule where if it isn't safe then no long rest is possible. It has to actually be safe. So no long rest in a dungeon unless, for example,...

We get around that by having a house rule that says 'for balance reasons between classes, we'll have the equivalent of 6-8 encounters with two short rests between long rests. One approach would be for the DM add a new weapon - maybe call it a harpoon or some other spear variant. Make it a martial weapon (i.e. most rogues can't use it), add the finesse property, remove the versatile property, and state that it can be used with pole-arm Mastery if used two-handed (but no extra damage).

Yeah, I get how he's trying to build a brand, but I don't find it compelling. Really, I don't like any logo / brand focused apparel. But many, many people do and I expect he'll do pretty well with this line. I'll certainly keep an eye on it.

Perhaps the Kensai Monk template would do... ... I would note that for "dex spear fighting", the multitudes of blows a monk can deal seems to work well. In my campaign one of the PCs is a monk (open fist) with a +1 spear. She kicks butt.

I would like other people on the thread advise against ability score damage. It makes things too fiddly. It's a good idea imo to look at the existing rules and options in 5e to see if theres something that suits your purpose. The dmg option of not restoring hp and only half char level in hd solves your first problem straight away. They have to spend hd to recover ir use spell resources,...

And it was interesting. I'll post the encounters below, but the short of it was that a thief (technically speaking, a warlock) stole an altar with a *god* in it (a very minor one, but still) and fled into a dangerous jungle. The party had to give chase before the tail grew cold or the warlock did something dangerous with the god. The party: Monk (open hand) Monk (drunken master)...

I always disliked monster group initiative for reasons likes this. Not exactly this situation, but being able to more effectively focus fire is the usual one for me. Yes, they could do it if they hold actions but at least that is giving up something for what I consider to be a powerful option of chaining attacks out. I understand it is to simplify running monsters but I still don't like that the...

I like the beholder pin . . . I don't like how the "Death Saves" logo gets more focus than the D&D artwork on most of these products. No thanks, Joe!

A second elf, his head showing about a month's growth of white hair, stands at the back of the group, so still his pale skin seems like marble. He wears an off-the-rack paper suit, the hilts of twin katanas sticking up over his shoulders, over the straps of his backpack. He has no visible tattoos. EDIT: His pupils dilate slightly as he recognizes the razorboy, but no other movement...

Still struggling a bit with my character build: thought taking a level of Tough would solve my defensive woes, which it did, but then realized that'd mean loosing his Mentor Spirit Talent... Back to the drawing board. Comments and suggestions: Touch weapon property could use a little flexibility, I think. Something like: "User can choose to either take +2 tohit without Str or Dex bonuses to...

Hiya! I generally try and 'default' to saying a skill that is most appropriate. In this case, Investigation works because it involves "looking for clues and connections". The more experienced a person is at this, the more they can keep a sort of 'mental notation' of things that may or may not be important later on. In other words, seeing a pen on a table and green ink beside it. A day...
