It's funny you mentioned nothing like that was in the rules back then in 3e, because I could've sworn there was something in there about not just rolling dice for rolling's sake. By far the most daily useful cantrip in real life, in my opinion. Prestidigitation: This spell is a minor magical trick that novice spellcasters use for practice. You create one of the following magical effects within range: You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor. - so fun at parties, new...

My point wasnít clear. IMO, there are more ďcorner casesĒ than times where the rule works better than the other way. Historicity is irrelevant. People expect a good weapon, it should be a good weapon. Itís a game, not a re-enactment. Ugh. No. Every concept that swings weapons is not better as part of the fighter. The idea of the Barbarian having conceptually weak subclasses is just inane silliness, though.

How are you defining low level here? A 5th level wizard preps 9 spells and you just gave nearly half of them of them up already in your list. Plus mage armor, typically. That cuts into offensive, defensive, and buffs. Don't forget that a wizard only averages 1 additional spell prepped over spells known for a sorc. Sure, it adds up but that's higher levels instead of lower levels. A sorc...

Since you specifically ask the question, I will tell you why I can't roleplay in 4E. It's because the rules don't tell us what's actually happening within the game world. With earlier editions, the mechanics very much told us what was happening at each step along the way of attempting every task, in as much granularity as we needed to perform those tasks. The mechanics of the game reflected...

I think it comes back to being about "take the attack action" being a requirement to even have a bonus action from shield master to be able to use. Thus, if you are still in the process of taking the attack action then the question of "did you take or have you taken the attack action would still not be true and thus you still wouldn't have a bonus action from shield master.

Fortunately, you can still take an attack action on your turn without performing it prior to the bonus action. All that the feat requires is that you take the attack action on the same turn. Which you can do even if it's not the first thing you do. You're inserting a requirement that isn't there. There is no "when, then".

I find a lot of uses for Shield Master and shoves: 1. Shoving into a hazard, difficult terrain, off a height, or into a spell effect like Spirit Guardians; 2. Cutting their speed in half by knocking them prone, as it costs half speed to stand up for most. 3. If I am in air proning a creature that canít hover causes it to fall 4. Giving advantage to that sneak attack , that...

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I ask the player to describe how they are helping. Depending on their answer, I might grant Advantage or lower the DC, or do nothing. Real example from my game table recently: Bixby (the rogue) was opening a locked chest. Chux (monk) wanted to help. Bixby: "I take out my Thieves' Tools and begin picking the lock." Chux: "I help, he gets Advantage." Me: ...

If you don't meet the requirements a feat lays out to have a bonus action then you have no bonus action to use. The Shield Master feat only allows you to take a bonus action if you take the attack action on your turn. So, you don't have the bonus action shove attack to use unless you take the attack action on your turn. Once you take the attack action on your turn then you have the bonus...

Yep and reasonable people also say very unreasonable things plenty of the time. I know I won't convince you but in this case saying that you have a bonus action before you ever take the attack action when the feat requires an attack action for the bonus action is unreasonable. That's funny. I rule that the Shield Master bonus attack can be used before the attack action. So I guess that...

Because I decided to use Pathfinder RPG to develop and publish my Kaidan setting of Japanese Horror. I stopped playing 3.5 to start playing Pathfinder, now I'm developing and publishing for Starfinder. I haven't even looked at D&D since 3.5, so no 4.0 nor 5.0. Besides I am not interested in a streamlined, lighter game - PF is the right amount of crunch for the games I play.

I know, I was trying to make it more dramatic/heroic, but the action has already been described in earlier posts. It funny, I feel the same when I lose my own character as I do when I kill a PC as a GM. I'm interested to see what Azurewraith comes up with. As for now, whats the plan?

Complaints about 4E If you've been in the hobby for a decade or so, you've probably heard all the usual complaints about 4E, which I'll try to address here from the perspective of a DM who has tried to sell starting a new 4E campaign in 2019 in the era of what's arguably the most popular edition of D&D ever. Combats Take Forever This is a hard point to argue. For example, I was recently...

I have no idea how many people agreed with your ruling without seeing sage advice, but most people that I've played with over the past few years never read a message board or even know that the twitter version of sage advice exists. Heck, most probably didn't know sage advice existed when it was published. In my admittedly limited experience, no one else has stated that you could not use the...

The increase in DPR for one handed polearm master paladin with duelist over a halberd polearm master paladin. For a Halbred/Glaive with 2 attacks and a bonus action d4 attack GWF adds 1.975 average damage and does d10+d10+d4. With a spear and duelist you do (d6+2=d10) d10+d10+d4 and duelist then adds 2 extra average damage on the last bonus action attack. The extra damage on smites will likely...

Ergo, my point. That is not upheld by the text, thoughóit doesn't say that you must first perform an attack action or that the attack action is granting you the bonus action (it's not, the feat is)óit merely requires you to take the attack action in the same turn as the bonus action.

Okay, so at the end of your turn you pushed the goblin back and went over to stand by your wizard. So? You're done with your turn the bugbear can continue to attack the wizard next round and as an added bonus the goblin can come over as well or use their shortbow to help kill the wizard. Heck, you've done the goblin a favor, he can now use his cunning to hide and potentially get advantage. ...

When I was gaming before I used books like Unearthed Arcana and other support books to create characters as I am the type I can't stand to use run of the mill characters I love using advanced characters that stand out somehow. Is there a generator that includes the support books for 3E and 3.5E?

I have the opposite complaint. I think advantage and disadvantage is handed out like candy way too often. They are basically the equivalent of +5 or -5 to the roll. I don't have a problem adding or subtracting 2 from a number and wish that a lot more game features used +2 or -2 as a slight gain/loss instead of throwing advantage or disadvantage into the works as often as they do. In...

+2 AC is significant but so is 10 feet reach. But if we want to maximize damage a GWF with smite rerolls would be better? However using 2h weapon would require 3 Hexblade dip on Half-Elf because he is SAD CHA. Which is not that bad, because Darkness, Devilsight and Agonizing Blast and 2 short rest 2 level slots. However at same time we delay Paladin progress.

But shield master bonus action doesn't have a timing. You can use it anytime on your turn after you have it. What matters is whether you have the bonus action or not. In the case of shield master you don't have the bonus action until you perform the attack action. After that you are welcome to use the bonus action you have at any time you choose.

The difference is in the consequences. For example, I need to get past a guard. I can persuade them to let me pass in return for a bribe. I can intimidate them to let me pass or I hurt them. I can deceive them to let me pass thinking I am supposed to be there. In all three cases, I succeeded in my goal (that is, I got past the guard) however the consequences are all very different. In...

It's revelent because there would be no necessity for the timing clause if things worked as you claim, as all bonus actions would happen after whatever allows it.

" I can shove and then hit followed by another shove if I have multiple attacks but I have to wait for all my attacks t be completed before shoving if I want to do it as a Shield Master?" This is wrong. If you have Shield master and extra attack you can take the attack action to shove, hit, then shove as BA with shield master. So your example is the same with shield master. The sequence is...

My argument has nothing to do with timing of a bonus action, it has to do with whether you even have it to take. In the case of shield master you have no bonus action to take until you take the attack action. After you have the bonus action to take you can take it at any point.
