I generally follow a few simple steps. Step 1: during the session 0 I let them know that there may be encounters they cannot win. Step 2: set up an encounter they can't win. Step 3: Broadcast, broadcast, broadcast. Make it obvious they cannot win. Step 4: Give them multiple routes of escape. If I want to make escape something more difficult than "we bravely run away", allow for failures...

I let any PC retreat from combat automatically if there is a reasonable path or potential for them to do so. No rolling necessary. They can grab a downed ally automatically, regardless of positioning, should they have the strength to do so. The loss of hp and other resources for no gain is usually punishment enough for entering into combat recklessly or by misfortune. If the monsters pursue...

The design of classes making their basic attacks effectively at-will strength and sometimes spikey more, was also rather a poor thing as it interacts much too well aka badly with anything granting basic attacks (almost like a narrow perceptioned designer in charge didnt even consider the most popular Warlord type)

The problem with running Fly on a Warlock is that it's a concentration spell, and you fall if your concentration breaks. If you had maxed Con and Con save proficiency, I could see taking it, but since you don't, and since nobody in your party has access to Feather Fall to save you if you fall, I don't think it's worth it.

Yeah, word count is the metric of professionals for that reason. If you do see somebody talking page count, 300 words per page is the translation, even though, most people know it's fuzzier than that. And agent or publisher or magazine will go by word count.

They don't necessarily make a huge difference but they can. With Feats and MC turned on, if your group then goes for full optimization, there are synergies that allow you to get quite a bit above the baseline in terms of power. As with magic items, they can simply make you better than what the game was designed for. Combine that with white grid encounters and a misunderstanding of how CR and...

And it’s broad enough to use for all such beings...so that greater deity, intermediate deity, and the like don’t really matter. Sure, in game terms maybe those designations may mean something to some games at...

Vengeance, being only once per short rest, will not make up that difference in...

Adventuring is dangerous. If death is not an actual possibility then it wouldn't be dangerous. Part of the problem is player expectations and the design of the game. Her base role play will be a "Paldinish" fighting character, not a spell caster, so the question is what would work with Paladin, not what would work with wizard. The reason she wants Paladin is the smite melee damage which will eclipse anything a bard can do and is comparable to a rogue, more dpr, but less uses. With Paladin 8/wizard 4 she will get slots equivalent to a 16th level Paladin...

Frankly, I think the best solution for those issues is to let the dice fall as they may. If the players get really lucky, maybe they'll survive (or even win). If not, they learn that bad stuff can happen to them. The advice about capturing rather than killing is good too, though you should be careful not to overuse it because doing so can negate the lesson that not every potential encounter...

Obviously it will vary by build but the fighter gets a full extra attack including all the dice and the strength/dexterity bonus plus...

So do a Master sheet listing the PCs and then extra worksheets for each character listing all their NPC connectionsand interest, then on the MAster sheet do a Match on the NPC names to identify all the PCs with common NPC connections.

Sometimes you have to follow through on the character deaths to keep the game moving properly. But I would tend to warn my players directly when the campaign starts that not all encounters will be within their respective power level and sometimes it's important to run. Tends to result in fewer dissatisfied or irate players.
