Today, 02:45 PMWell, the elf and dwarf chapters are supposedly more like "elves vs drow" and "dwarves vs duergar", so they do fit the conflict and monster themes. The chapter on gnomes and halflings does kind of stick out, even if it is explained as a chapter that contrasts peaceful raves with those in conflict.,,43 replies | 1348 view(s)0 XP

Today, 02:36 PMThis was the path that I had in mind (or picking up spell sniper even later if not going variant human). I had already accepted that I would be just using polearm master attack routine for the majority of the character's career. I suppose it is also heavily campaign dependent to take spell sniper. If at that level you aren't facing a lot of melee oriented, non-reach foes then it's not worth...53 replies | 824 view(s)0 XP

Today, 02:36 PMshidaku replied to Campaign regretsSure, it can't be helped. There's one DM, 3-5 players and a dozen NPCs to run at any given moment, eventually something slips out or gets forgotten. Today, 02:14 PMI'm looking into different options for maneuver mechanics. Could I get some opinions on this one please? Today, 02:12 PMSomewhat yes, but the two biggest draws of Polearms are 1) Reach and Sentinel/Polearm Master reaction attacks and/or (if using a quarterstaff) 2) The extra Bonus Action attack, either for similar damage as the quarterstaff, or another attempt to add lots of secondary damage from sources like GWM The blade cantrips unfortunately forgo all of those unless you invest in both War Caster and...53 replies | 824 view(s)0 XP

Today, 02:05 PMI still think you're making a lot of assumptions. The usefulness of this spell is going to depend on the game and on the situation. The same can be said for lots of spells and other game options. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.107 replies | 3909 view(s)0 XP

Today, 01:57 PMImaculata replied to Campaign regretsI don't have regrets often. Sometimes I may regret not making the encounters in the session harder or more interesting, I always try to improve as a DM. But as far as the story and adventures, I'm usually happy with my choices, since my players seem to enjoy it all. But there was one particular session where I had prepared the island of Witchclaw. I had specifically prepared a lot of random...9 replies | 203 view(s)0 XP

Today, 01:51 PMThe major flaw in this? By the time this combo comes into fruition, you've played your character his whole career without it. Today, 01:48 PMDoug McCrae replied to Why Worldbuilding is BadYes, I think you're on to something there. Talking about one's PC falls into the same category. That's an advantage to talking about game rules, artwork and other published texts we've all read - we all have equal access. Whereas played rpgs are private. Also, it's weird that we don't have established terms to distinguish between 'roleplaying game' in the sense of a published game text and...1312 replies | 46157 view(s)0 XP

Today, 01:41 PMDausuul replied to Thoughts on Eldritch Knight Polearm BuildThe focus of the combo is opportunity attacks, though. Stacking booming blade with Spell Sniper, War Caster, and Polearm Master means you can make an OA with booming blade any time an enemy comes within 10 feet of you. So you're already doing bonus damage on the OA, and then you add more bonus damage if the enemy closes to melee. (And if they came within 10 feet, they probably wanted to be in...53 replies | 824 view(s)1 XP

Today, 01:39 PMWhen James closes the door again, the room once more becomes quiet, if not peaceful. Traubon nods as Thadius asks the dwarf to translate his words, and the goblin starts nodding as it listens to him. Today, 01:33 PMMerricB replied to To MAX HP or not to MAX HPI should really do that. Actually, having a dice-rolling app to roll hit points for monsters might be a very good idea to bring more variance into how monsters work. (Although, with the variance of player damage rolls, does it actually have any effect?) I often announce when a player reduces a monster to 1 hit point, which some might see as cruel. Though, if I don't, the paladin might...44 replies | 1053 view(s)0 XP

Today, 01:30 PMAtomicPope replied to To MAX HP or not to MAX HPIn an alternate game (when folks are sick, can't make it, et al), I tried out MAX HP and Monty Hall. The DPR was pretty insane but it allowed for some great content. I never gave the monster's MAX HP though. I don't want the monsters to stick around forever. Today, 01:27 PMMerricB replied to MagicWeaponsDo whatever feels right to you. What's the worst thing that can happen? Everyone leaves your campaign? ;) I think, in general, once a PC *has* a special magic weapon, then it's very hard to upgrade it. Magic Weapons and who gets the most from them? in *D&D 5th Edition News, Rules, Homebrews, and House Rules
That's a pretty one-sided poll! :) I noticed in my Storm King's Thunder game how poor the monk and paladin were at hurting things compared to the barbarian. Then the paladin gained a giant slayer sword. She's not bad at fighting any more! The monk has a +2 bonus to Dex and Str at 6th level and likely needs help. Cheers!17 replies | 729 view(s)0 XP -

Today, 01:17 PMMerricB replied to Do you use skill challenges? There are things I like about skill challenges, like the consequences for failure, but the overall structure didn't work for me. I recently ran a D&D Adventurers League CCC adventure that used one, and it just didn't work. Today, 01:15 PMWhy don't you ask your player upfront about how much (s)he wants you to be involved? Some players may certainly respond well and be grateful to have RP opportunities and quests given, but other players may just hate it that you might end up pulling strings on their PC, if it starts to feel too much that the patron is forcing them to do this or not to do that, while other PCs are totally free.12 replies | 322 view(s)0 XP

Today, 01:12 PMAldarc replied to Why Worldbuilding is BadI think one of my primary criticisms with threads about worldbuilding - and this is not aimed at anyone in particular - is that they almost always invariably devolve into people wanting to talk about their homebrew worldbuilding. Today, 01:03 PMLi Shenron replied to MagicWeaponsThat's pretty much one of the trade-offs that can make the game tactically more interesting. Do you prefer a flat permanent bonus or a "burst" bigger bonus that is otherwise situational? :) I don't think there is much problem in combining the two, but then clearly the weapon becomes a no-brainer unless you find a flat one with an even bigger bonus.10 replies | 217 view(s)0 XP

Today, 10:59 AMDoug McCrae replied to What is *worldbuilding* for? That's a good question.
