Assuming you have the N.E.W. core rulebook, see page 65: "Checks and attacks. Most psionic powers operate automatically, with no attribute check being required. However, if a psionic power affects an unwilling target or creature, a PSI vs. RANGED, MELEE, or MENTAL DEFENSE attack is always required."

Just for Halloween fun, I've gone to the Wikipedia list of horror roleplaying games and made a poll to see what the top 10 most popular are. If your choice isn't on this list, post in the thread and I'll add it. You may select multiple games. I've tied to include RPGs, but not settings for RPGs (though that would also be a fun poll). Votes are hidden -- I'll reveal them in dramatic fashion later!...

Fair enough. To be honest, whenever I introduce a new monster into the campaign, I usually research the previous editions MM (monstrous compendium for 2e) to mine for inspiration for possible additional mechanics and roleplaying ideas. Although I love the 5e MM, I still find myself doing that, in case I miss something or do not play something true. I'm a mental case that way. :)

Wait, what? Why would any NPC have anything backgrounded? This isn't a class power and it certainly doesn't apply to NPC's. Why on earth would a DM have to background anything? Unless, your party is somehow tracking the PC druid for some reason? I'm rather confused. And again, you are stating that a T-Rex needs to be balanced against the inconvenience of having a T-Rex. That having a,...

I cannot claim credit: I stole the idea from (I think) Usenet decades ago. You can use poker chips or tokens for status effects and being under the effect of a spell too. And to denote you're Concentrating on a spell. And so on. The thing is that it's an immediate visual cue and reminder to everyone. You just need to remember to colour-code consistently and for everyone to remember - or have a...

Add in a random roll between stages in a combat and you vastly reduce opportunities to implement plans just due to the added random screw of a new unit roll. It was a city campaign and the PCs were law enforcement. The players decided to "bring them in alive" as a credo. There was a lot of subdual damage done and the arcane casters concentrated on investigation, battlefield control, and buffing the martial combatants.

This is one aspect of Gygax's rules and guidelines that I threw out pretty much the moment I saw it, back in the early 80's. My general notes: 1) I agree with many others that there are too many dump stats in 5e, especially Int. I don't need it to have a lot, but it would be nice if it gave something generally to characters. 2) Melee vs Ranged: I still see a lot of melee characters because melee is cool, but at the end of the day ranged is actually a superior option. 3) Too many encounters needed per day. 5e...

So in 1e henchmen gained experience points for killing things, but other NPCs didn't? Dunno. I never said that they had to be 10th level exactly. I said 10th level or so. A king's champion is probably not going to be a single digit level putz, though I suppose 8th or 9th is possible. Kings have powerful enemies, so they need powerful champions. Up until 5th edition(or maybe 4th....

I work on my setting as a hobby and I'm not just talking about prep for an upcoming session. It's my way of "playing" when we're not actually playing. As a result, I have layers and layers of things going on all across my setting at any given time. The vast majority of this work will never be seen or noticed by my players and I'm okay with that. It makes running campaigns within my setting all...

Levels in themselves are weird (and "gamey") because of the way they group together, and homogenise, various elements of human capability. Ability scores are similar in this respect (eg there are at least some human beings who have good reaction times but don't actually move very fast, and/or have poor balance; but in D&D these traits all tend to track one another via DEX). But it's especially...

Yes, cause why do wizards gain more arcane knowledge through killing stuff, and not, you know, actual study?

This leads me to a suggestion that might make a good rule for this site: as 5e is intended to be kitbashable, no complaint regarding 5e design may be posted without also including a suggestion for how to fix said complaint in the same post. Howzat? :)

Oh yeah, definitely only in the context of this book. In the context of the MtG plotline, planeswalkers are the real movers and shakers of the story shaping entire blocks of MtG.

Perhaps the former, but certainly not the latter intentionally. Then again, you made a reference to "dissociative mechanics", so we are probably playing two very different games, and are unlikely to agree. So maybe we'd best just leave it at that.

Art & Arcana is out today in both Standard ($50 MSRP) and Special ($150) Editions. Is the Special Edition worth the additional $100? Let’s find out! The first thing you’ll notice about this Special Edition is Hydro74’s (Joshua Smith) gold leaf cover on a black slipcase. Smith is the go-to artist for Wizard of the Coast’s special editions and it’s drawn in his distinctive style. You...

Very true. I've had it in mind, but never fully codified it, that non-adventuring NPCs can slowly gain levels in a class just through spending years at doing what they do; be it lab mage, street thief, stay-at-home temple cleric, militia or guard, or whatever.

You might not have passed your own reading comprehension check there. The rule explicitly allows for an improvised weapon (e.g., a shield), to the extent that it is similar to an actual weapon (e.g., focuses impact on a flange or rim like a mace), to be treated as such for its damage die and type. The DM may then, at his option, allow or disallow the application of the proficiency bonus for that...

Call of Cthulhu is still my favorite - the source material is pretty compelling and with a lot of awesome adventure material. Plus, questions like this give me a chance to flog one of the best RPG campaigns I've ever experienced, from both the player and Keeper side - The Masks of Nyarlathotep. Though I do have to say that It Came from the Late, Late, Late Show did have its charms. Having a...

Levels are a really weird. They can be fun, but totally gamey and abstract. It's totally believable that in a kingdom at peace, the king's champion might have a lot of training without having engaged in deadly conflict. The untested warrior...

"Impressive" said Kalorn. He looked around at the desolate, wintry surface of the glacier. He hoped the dragon couldn't hear the rumble of the ship on ice at a great distance - would the sound carry? "Well, I suppose we should press on ahead and scout. I don't think my bat will fare well in this weather. Lorenn, what about your familiar?"

I don't think you'll find me saying that. The process of authoring a RPG is (obviously) different from the process of authoring a book: most obviously because the audience is also the author, and there is both the real-time dimension to that and the consequent lack of editing. I think Galahad is an excellent example. On a slightly related note, on of my favourite things about 4e is that a...
