The reason why you couldn't fight lower-level enemies in 4E was tied directly to the HP-recovery mechanics. The assumption is that you would recover to full HP after every encounter, which meant that every encounter had to be potentially lethal; a low-level encounter that only ate through a small portion of your HP would have been pointless. I'm not certain that it will be the same in PF2. I...

Personal peeve... GMs who think dead pcs are valid teaching (metagame cuz the dead pc did not impart wisdom to its replacement) but players thinking meta-game for their choices is wrong. In the gameplay your describe, as long as i was allowed replacement characters, each would be role-played "greener" than the last, not "educated" by the previous failures.

"But, death (final, un-cheated death)" is a choice put into play and onto a PC by the GM (or by the players and GM in more abstract sense in the setting deginition stages) and not an absolute. If a GM doesn't want that to be, they can have setups where not dying or at least not-unreversible-dying is plausible outcome for the various types of failure. It requires fore-warning, pre-seeding in...

At the same time, sometimes players are handed one and only one story hook by the GM and with nothing else to grab they take it. Then it leads to a monster they know they can't beet but they don't think their is another path so they think, "well I guess the GM wants to start a new campaign, at the very lest I am going down swinging." If the Same GM gives opens up an exit the players are likely to...

Yes. I have a large group (7 players) and if they focus-fire they can bring down just about anything in one round. So if I want a "miniboss" monster I'll crank up the monster HP, and maybe give out extra attacks or damage. I don't do a blanket increase in hit points to all monsters, though. Example: The party fought an efreeti and her fire elemental servants. I doubled the efreeti's hit points...

The problem is that it takes a high level of system mastery on the part of players and DM for this to work, since it's not really made clear in the rulebooks. There's no advice to "avoid rolling if you can" for either party. It also means that high level rogues (amongst other roll boosters) are designed to break the...

But the old lore works just fine in the meantime. And a book of rules for how gods work is pretty darn niche. There’s very few campaigns were you need hard rules for how gods and divinity work.

I'm not sure what 5e has to say about it, because, TBH, 5e could have been written in 1992 and it would hardly have been remarkable! DW and FATE are a LOT more like 4e than they are like 5e, so I would say that, if you think PF2 is paying attention to 4e, then it would likely be paying attention to those games as well, at least by my reckoning. I consider 4e to be a heavily story oriented game,...
