When your interpretation is so outlandish that you are claiming that a shield resembles a mace then it’s a house rule.

You're still just describing a player and a DM who are not on the same page which isn't unique to the Inspiration mechanic. In any case, this thread is "Ideas for Improving Inspiration," which I've already provided upthread. What's your idea?

You did it. You got it. You spent it. You did it again. You await for the DM to provide you the reward. They do not give it to you. You may be doing it too much, and the DM may not want to keep giving you Inspiration for doing the thing, as you fish the DM for more Advantage. IMO, this is why I view Inspiration as a poorly designed Skinner Box mechanic.

I'm thinking about allowing our sorcerer to renew his pool of sorcery points at every short rest. The idea here is to trade the potential of "going nova" for reliability through the adventuring day. How many do you think he should get? Is half his sorcerer level (rounded down) too many?

Discuss it with the DM. He or she told you how to get it, you did it, and didn't get it. That's a reasonable discussion to have in my view to get back on the same page.

No, Frog, I don't think I'm making a house rule for shields. The rule for Improvised Weapons is that "An object that bears no resemblance to a weapon deals 1d4 damage (the DM assigns a damage type appropriate to the object)." I tried to explain, in those three paragraphs, how I conclude that the phrase "bears no resemblance to a weapon" does not apply to a shield, and that I think the shield,...

My question about knowing where the lizard folk were was based on this post: I take it, though that Surina doesn't have a sense of where the larger figure is, so she'll head for the kobolds, as stated above. She will, however, try to keep an eye out for the larger figure.

It seems to me the optimal choice as a player at a table where the DM rewards Inspiration (as opposed to at mine where the player claims it) is to set about the "more reliable methods of gaining advantage" as you say plus do things the DM is known to reward for Inspiration. When I join a game with a new DM, it's one of the first questions I ask: "What do I have to do to earn Inspiration?"

You get experience in D&D by killing things. It's in the rules, so I learned it..............in the rules. Without killing and being intimately familiar with killing and people trying to kill them. And before you go on about how NPCs in 5e don't need stats and levels, a champion who has to fight does. They need everything a PC needs for combat, since a PC may end up fighting him.

"Min/maxers" are roleplaying though and what a character "would do" is whatever a player says he or she will do. Inspiration just rewards a player for portraying the character in 5 specific ways. If one wants to see more of that, taking away the requirement for disadvantaging oneself or one's party should see an uptick in portraying the character as established.

Both sides agree that the a particular thing is just going to bump along in a satisfactory way without spending table time at it. If the player breaks the agreement then the GM needs to respond. There is no loss of consistency from backgrounding...

There's a difference between adding something new and changing something already established. I'm more open to the former than the latter. That said, I'd be tempted to only add new feats if the whole table agreed. The natures of spells and gear are more fluid; new stuff should appear from time to time.

It very specifically mentions that you don't get to be one of those things without killing.

EN World talked to Tim about his history of game design and Thousand Year Old Vampire itself. Sean Hillman (SH): Tim, before we get into Thousand Year Old Vampire, can you tell folks about how you got into gaming and game design? What were the biggest...

Yeah, adventure backstory can be a pain. Especially if the adventure doesn't give any real way for the PCs to learn any of that lovingly-crafted detail. One of the big issues does indeed seem to be that there are two markets for published adventures: in addition to the market of DMs who want to use the material, there's a (larger?) market of people who just buy them to read them. For the...

For something like a spear, I could see STR helping out with that. Knives and axes take some finesse to throw properly, but spears are pretty straightforward.

A bit of both. I find coming up with the "big picture" stuff comes quite easily, but filling in the detail a lot harder. Plus, I tend to repeat themes a great deal, so it's some effort to make sure that that is kept to a minimum. :)

For me it's important to make suffering disadvantage (not necessarily in form of a roll, but let's call it... a "suboptimal move") a requirement. You're right that it's a disincentive to trying to earn it - but that's what I want to accomplish in the first place. If all my players are min-maxers that always do optimal decisions, then they just don't earn Inspiration. No losses here. The gain...

"One should never be without his Kalorn. For the blanket and the Alchemist's fire. And since you are evoking monster stories, I have a good one. Some of you remember SnorLoska. One day I told him what I've heard about Hydra meat, after we killed one. When you cut off a hydra's head, two heads grow, right? It seems it has some latent magical energy in it, even after the hydra dies. It...

While I would very much like to see this, I'm beginning to think that those might be one of the truly sacred cows of D&D.

Again with monster complaints. :erm: It is like no one bothered to read what I posted upthread regarding modifying monsters, using terrain, weather and most importantly using the fluff. More ideas. 1. Rest: Change up rest periods or possibility of rest. If rest is always possible, then PC's resource management and attrition (a big part of the game) is absent and will negatively affect combat...

right, he said that and Shalosha remembered it. As for Katrina and Shalosha... usually I decide on the NPC's stances by background, general attitude and narrative. But there are times when I simply cannot decide between two or more options and then I simply roll the dice. Hence Shalosha's (good and successful) sense motive vs. Katrina's (good) bluff and Katrina's (rather bad and failed) sense...

Yes, we dropped Inspiration entirely. My players don't like that there's a shortcut to optimizing - to them it cheapens the accomplishment of setting up Advantage. Do note that the proposal above works no matter what. It provides a static bonus and extra movement - not advantage, precisely for this reason. Also, a player might never use the Inspiration he starts each session with, and...

Okay, that's a fair point. Then I guess the player needs to learn to ask his DM instead of consulting books. The idea that a player could overrule his DM using rules quotes was never a good idea in the first place. But you're right, if that is what one was used to, then the complaint makes sense. (Do note that if WOtC had written what I just wrote, "use DC 15 unless you're sure it's...

I would have liked a little bit more balance in the general usefulness of the 6 ability scores. There is still a certain tendency to "dump" Strength, Intelligence or Charisma significantly more often than the other three. During the playtest I always wrote that in my feedback, the difference between the "greater three" and the "lesser three" could have been mitigated a bit for example by...

I disagree... mostly. At 1st level, I think Backgrounds make for a great addition to the character. I agree that they very quickly fall by the wayside, though. I think I'd be inclined to suggest that at 5th level they should consider having the character's Background be superseded by something else (maybe Faction at 5th level, then a Paragon Path at 11th, and Epic Destiny at 16th?). Yeah,...

What you describe seems non-simultaneous in the strictest sense because the archer's shot lands **before** the wizard finishes his spell. So there does seem to be a sequence of completion off tasks. This seems to indicate a set of staged resolution steps with spells after bows. Have seen that in systems before and nothing wrong with it especially when you dial those resolution stages to...
