If nothing else, this discussion has made me realize how terrible the jump rules are. I propose the following. Jumping requires an Athletics check. The DC of the jump is based on the distance jumped. For a standing long jump the zdC equals 5 plus twice the distance jumped. For a running long jump the DC equals 5 plus the distance jumped. For a standing high jump the DC equals 5 per foot jumped...

Buddhist teaching is not averse to self-control. If Stoics became interested in the Buddhist theory of the mind (I'm thinking of "textbook" Buddhism and glossing over the great variation in actual beliefs and practices) it's not obvious to me that they couldn't incorporate elements of it. I also think that Stoicism has some elements in common with Taoist-influenced Buddhism; and it's not absurd...

Twitter doesn't help, Jeremy's too busy ignoring WotC's research because it's inconvenient for him to answer questions, so to the forums it is! The Faerie Dragon has a feature, Superior Invisibility, that allows it to turn invisible as a bonus action. According to the DMG, this feature increases it's effective AC by 2. And nothing else. Compare this with Nimble Escape, which allows a...

I want to keep it super-simple, so here's what I'm most likely going to do: 1) Make it obvious that the Zhents are throwing their weight around in town because they want to find the tomb. 2) If the PCs stop the Zhents from finding the tomb (either by killing them all or running them out of town), then an old man dressed like a woodsman will show up and take them aside, thanking them for...

So many people don't really offer up much in the way of constructive criticism. They just want to shout out that others are wrong and that what they believe is right.

One can use that for every issue one raises with the game to just shutdown the naysayers - whether it be every other week for some or once in a while for others, like those who didn't like the amendment/clarification to the Shield Master feat.

Don't do that strawman. Nobody expects two editions to be "actually compatible", since as you imply, that would mean they're really only one edition. Leaving d20 modules (and frankly, 5E modules too) with "worthless" gold, is, on the other hand, breaking the level of compatability that is reasonable to expect.

It's the act of creation that differentiates RPG's from other games. And, since you play out what you create, rather than what the rules of the game tell you to play out, RPG's become game creation engines. The rules cannot tell you whether...

If you go tomelock you can get shillalah for a cha powered staff, and celestial warlocks can do extra damage with the green flame blade cantrip, which isn't compatable with the bladelock's second attack anyway. To get college of sword though requires a *three* level dip... but it does help a fair bit. You can go all out and go for a six level "dip" but that's now a bard with a warlock dip, not the other way around. My version of the character Warpiglet alluded to is an EK 3/Hexblade 5. I got the chance to start at level 8 in a pbp campaign so...

Ancalagon Yeah I'm okay with you changing your turn in this case - you'd rushed it before and I hadn't resolved it yet anyway. So no problem, your second post will stand. How'd the wife do at her event? EarlyBird What's Dellrak up to?

Have the coach let them know that there's a hidden pit trap and see if a single one doesn't try as hard as he freaking can. It's a False Equivalence to equate that example to D&D jumps that have consequences. It can in a game where it's needed for other reasons. The reality is, you aren't ever going to be able to jump the exact same distance every single time, but the game simplifies it for...

If your using Unarmored Combat with a 16 dex and 14 wis your AC is 15 and not likely to rise anytime soon. While I would agree Defensive Duelist is an option to of set that your end result is you muli-classes to get rid of a feat requirement for Moderately Armored at level 1 and polearm master at level 4 in trade for a Warlock progressions delay and a requirement for Defensive Duelist at level 1...

I prefer that you do not assume anything about my character's choices between effort and precision, safety and risk. i think that should be my choice as the decider for that character as to what they want to try and do. If i want an all-out jump with risk of failure and chance of longer distance *by the rules* then i expect you to allow me to choose that. if you decide thats not possible...

This makes zero sense to me. How is "best effort" when it comes to jumping distance not correlated with how far you try to jump? Coach: "Ok, I want you to put in your best effort on this jump!" Athlete: (Jumps five feet despite being capable of farther distances) Coach: "That wasn't your best effort!" Athlete: "Sure it was!"

Crawford didn't say they would not address the known issues with beastmaster rangers. He said he won't be offering an alternative version of the class. Not the same thing. And as many people in this thread have mentioned, just a few things like new fighting style and some new spells can go a huge way to fixing it, without the need for an alternative anything.

I made the distinction between "Skills" and combat abilities because the game mechanics do. They're acquired differently, they work differently. Even in 4e, which used the universal proficiency bonus, skills were acquired at time of creation and then never changed, unless you spent a feat on one, or picked something up through cross classing. They advanced in an inflationary manner, but...

But if GM says no well then I'll stick to the original plan. If yes... well let's see if my rolling streak is broken? Rodrigo's jaw dropped at the sudden flurry of ice magic and death. He heard Harb's cry and gasped in reply ...

IMO the very first session should be a PC building session and if possible the 1st level adventure. By this I literally mean everyone shows up with pad and pencil and start talking through and rolling up PCs right there, with the DM lobbing in ideas. The DM helps with “orc is a helpful language” or “lots of undead incoming” or even “you will be relying on hit dice to recover HP so durable...

Absolutely... you use greatest effort when needed and enough to get it done under the conditions when not. The jump distance under movement if free action as part of movement no fail unless terrain at landing jump distance - or in other words - safe, controlled and precise. Even with my *limited* athletics experience, i know that means there is more power than that which gives you perfect...

I'm giving your character the benefit of the doubt that they do their best when it matters. Would you prefer to jump fewer than your Strength in feet across this gap? Now you're just being pedantic. I assume competence on the part of the characters. That includes knowing when to conserve energy and when to spend it. That's part of doing the best you can.

By "dominated" I meant that she laid out tremendous damage, and definitely contributed her fair share when the stakes we're high. She didn't want to put Trinket in danger, however, which goes to show how differently the designers and many Beastmaster inclined players were thinking. Now, Crawford just mentioned the Ranger qua Ranger, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Beastmaster remains a...

I've studied it and commented in their thread, been a minor part of the discussion. It has evolved into basically a 'core system' approach where the rules being written aren't really a complete game, but more of a 4e-compatible platform. So, for example, it doesn't include classes or specific powers. You could simply use 4e ones, with a few terminology adjustments, or make up new ones for other...

Because of maximum effort. Again, the rule says that your strength determines how far you can go, and then proceeds to tell you how far you can go in the jump rules. If they don't use maximum effort, they aren't going to go strength distance. It's only auto succeed because of the maximum effort.

There seems to have been some serious necro going on but its a good topic... I chose other because it varies by character and often - ok always - includes all of those. Example: For my current DnD5e game, starting at 1st i was given a list of characters already in and saw "no mages". So, cuz i did not want to play "book guy" or "mage-shooter-lock" i chose sorc. i chose halfling as a...

A few things. First, "anything beyond that is the realm of an ability check" is false. Only the DM determines if an ability check is called for, so some attempts to go further can be auto success or auto fail. The player doesn't get to decide. At least not if playing by RAW. Second, my feeling on the jump distance = strength rule is that they made it that way to speed up play, and so that...
