Looks like the vast majority of your complaints are about Adventurer's League and not the game itself. No game can fix a bad DM. DMs from any game can ignore the rules. Your DM having you do hard ability checks for what should just be automatic success isn't a fault of the game, it' s just the DM ignoring the rules. The exact same thing can and will happen in PF or whatever. As far as: ...

I just finished watching Episode 1: Enemy of the Guildpact in the Ravnica: Broken Pact series. It is the first episode of a planned 10-part series with plans to continue the story if the show is popular enough. The third episode will be broadcast live from TwitchCon. A Q&A also revealed more Ravnica information. Each episode is followed up by a Q&A and discussion called Talk Pact that...

Some people read it differently because it's possible to disagree on what the general rules are. For example, the combat mechanics are abstract, and in an abstract system I don't see any reason to assume that the statements "you cannot do two different actions simultaneously" and "once you start one action you need to complete it before you can start another action" are true. Instead, I...

I realised just before the last session that we finished our original run on session 130, and with this being session 70 of the reboot, we were now at a landmark 200th session. I decided that this would be an appropriate point to switch our count back to 'total sessions played' rather than 'reboot...

I have to ask the ecology of this thing. Spines are typically a defensive countermeasure, and this thing has the intelligence of a hunter. As for giving it a melee attack, it shouldn't change the CR unless it somehow does more damage than it's spines. Even just using the spine attack in melee range should be ok.

I can see quite a few ways to go beyond a T-Rex. Flying alone adds +2 effective AC (for +0.5 total CR), up to CR 10. Some sort of chameleon skin for invisibility would be +4 attack roll modifier and +4 AC, for +2 challenge. Adding a swallow ability would also make it more strategically challenging. Although I can't see all of those together on the same creature.

You have a lot of ideas here, but it all appears to be tuned for 3.5, and not for fifth edition. Level adjustment, for example, has not been introduced (yet) to 5th ed.; natural armour works differently; races no longer have favoured classes; some of the skills with bonuses no longer exist; etc.

Obviously. Backgrounding can't be done for major campaign elements. If we're playing a post apocalyptic setting a la Mad Max, then backgrounding a motorcycle couldn't be done. Sorry, I thought we had made this clear earlier. Wow, that's harsh. O.O I guess it's because I value my players. It has taken me many years to build a solid group of people that I enjoy playing with week...

The problem with repeating these old tweets is that the tweet we are discussing here is from May of 2018 (including the year for people reading this next year) where Jeremy says he ruled against the RAW in those other tweets, that he was wrong, and that the triggered action having to come after the triggering action matches RAW and does not change anything about the wording in the books. Also,...

In your sleep you are visited by your Gawds Angel. As you prostate yourself before its glory you hear its majestic proclamation. "You have not been tithing enough to the Church. It is 10% of the Gross not Net, you knew the rules when you signed up. No more spells until you pay."

How’s this for an unpopular opinion: I don’t think its intended function is particularly incongruous with the fiction. Look, the way I see it, a creature’s AC generally represents how difficult that creature is to hit. Being more nimble, holding a plank of wood in front of you, ducking behind a chest-high wall, being surrounded by a magical field of repulsive force, wearing a...

Last session was mainly RP (yay) but we ended on a fight (which I try to do if possible). The fight was a single CR9 Glabrezu. It gave them real problems - it has some really neat abilities. I'd say I've seen them more easily handle 3 or 4 stone giants. CR is a funny old thing ;) However, I normally use Kobold Fight Club to calculate XP budgets etc. Of course what they don't know, since we...

Tense! How does this sound as a resolution. Gimlak shoots 2x wolves before Faenala moves in to block his way. Just as things appear to look like things are about to get "serious", Zemryn moves in and makes it clear she will intervene if Gim and Fae get into melee.

I took on milestone-ish levelling once they reached level 5. At first I kept a rough tally but now I don't at all (particularly as the campaign gained momentum), and I can't imagine ever doing the other way again. Anyway, I expect that's another thread entirely!

Some of the suggestions that getting sent on GM-initiated fetch quests or whatever by the patron is part of the "cost" of playing a warlock did make me think of this. It's as if the "cost" is content that (in the posited example) no one at the table (except perhaps the GM) wants.

Shield is a little different by design, since it consumes a resource (spell slot) for the casting and it is a reaction natively, without being readied. The spell was very carefully designed to not waste the spell slot in a situation where an attack would miss the caster anyway.

It's simultaneous, not after. Unless you are arguing that if you make an attack with a sword, you've made the attack and the sword comes into it sometime later. This is not true per RAW. Per raw you can use your movement before or after the attack action. "You can break up your movement on your turn, using some of your speed before and after your action." Once you engage the action,...

I wasn't focusing especially on the "hostile action" bit as that did not seem relevant to the work your example was doing. My point is that the example plays out no differently whether the trigger is "hostile action", "make an attack", "take the attack action", etc. Whichever wording is used, the in-fiction trigger is the drawing of a sword, the nocking of an arrow, or whatever it might be. I...

"Taking the attack action" is Attacking. It absolutely correlates with "some event in the fiction." In the case of a dog, Attacking is coming at you with teeth bared, snarling. Making an attack is trying to bite you with a d20 roll. I referred to the opportunity attack as a part of illustrating that Attacking (taking the attack action on your turn) and making an attack were distinct things in...

I think 5ekyu answered this question pretty well with his filter post. I will just add, in a DM-driven story, the big picture is known by the DM, so he would be best aware what will and will not work in a given campaign. Can a DM be too stringent? Sure. Like always, as a player you have to find a DM you believe is fair, respect and trust.

The resolution plays out very differently. "Hostile action" covers any display of hostility, including drawing your sword and preparing to strike (behavior that may be inferred in the "Attack" action when taken in combat.) The readied spell is one which can interrupt the attacker, so casting it before the ranged or melee attack is made is important. If the spell succeeds, the planned ranged or...
