That's true, because in the situation where my players are lost but I tell them they are not, I would be lying to them and never lying to my players is one of my DM principles. I don't see the benefit of putting my players in that situation. I can put them in the situation where they don't know if they are on the right or the wrong path and that seems sufficient to me. Yes, I sometimes do...

None. Mind Flayer was the original name in the 1st edition Monster Manual. When the lore about them was expanded in the Dragon magazine, Illithid was invented as thier name for themselves (Mind Flayer being what others called them). This was fully incorporated into he core rules by 2nd edition.

Dandin easily sidestepped the goblin's clumsy thrust and put himself between the greenskin and the nearest exit. He grinned and tipped his rapier up mockingly before making a thrusting his blade smoothly past the flustered goblin's guard. I'm assuming that there was no usage of his bardic inspiration this time? In either case, same reaction, AoO if any goblins try to move past him, or...

The only PathFinder material I've played in 5e was We Be Goblins. I've never played Pathfinder and am not familiar with its APs. The only reason I played We Be Goblins is that it was provided free to Realmworks customers. I really enjoyed it and found it pretty easy to convert to 5e on the fly.

Interesting, in another recent thread about bad DMs someone was complaining about DM who read boxed text. One of the main complaints about boxed text is that they gave all this detail put the description of the important things, especially the monsters, at the end. I think it depends on the encounter and feeling your are trying to create. If there is a big, fearsome dragon, it makes sense...

It’s certainly not true of all players who want a lot of mechanical options, but some players want a lot of options because they want a lot of combinations, and they want a lot of combinations because they think they can “win the game” with them. They want those options to be in official published products because they don’t want to ask the GM’s permission to use them, or at least want to have...

Also it has access to the full wizard spell list compensating for any shortcoming on that front.

This may seem minor but you guys have described most of the other ways we've all improved. Describe the monsters last. Over the last few years I've run a lot of older modules. Invariably, when there's boxed text and a creature present, the creature is always the last thing described. Presumably, it's because the monster is the most important thing there so if you describe it last they'll...

The marks in no way are, or should be, equal. The powers of a halfling subrace are not strictly balanced with the powers of an elven subrace or a gnome subrace. You have to compare a PC halfling with the Mark of a Hospitality to a Human with the Mark of Making. When you then compare the total abilities and powers of the PCs, they look a lot more balanced.

They certainly don't *need* a shield guardian to help them out, but it could potentially be fun having them deal with sick/poisoned/lost NPCs. I'm also considering saying no long rests unless they find an existing sanctuary or take the time to build themselves an outpost (as per the new downtime activity).

Sure, something happens: The PCs enter the dungeon and face the next challenge. Not every die roll needs to have all its consequences fully resolved on the spot. Statelessness is for websites, not D&D games.

What if it makes sense for the unnoticed hidden creatures to stay hidden? Surely you’re not going to make them take the suicidal action of revealing themselves to a well armed party of PCs just so something happens. What happens at my table after a navigation check is the party enters a new area. Whether or not it’s the area they intended to enter depends on the result of that check.

In theory movement should not specify anything. In HERO, Teleport is used for the "ninja throws a ball of dust on the floor and disappears in a cloud of smoke" ability. Usually with the limitation "there must be an uninterrupted path between the starting and ending locations." In M&M, that would just be "Medium - no physical obstacles." :)

Yep. I do this. But that's also because of my previously stated point about classes supposedly taking years of training to develop, et al. So if a character was created as a Fighter, them suddenly MC into Monk isn't cool with me. That said, if a character is always presented with this concept ("I was trained in a monastery, but rejected because I pursued war rather than peace"), then the...

Its set up for someone to try and breach the first level (lower level) would activate additional security, while if they detect and try the higher level first it will also detective/unlock the door. IF the second level had not been detected and the first level unlocked instead would set off extra security.

It does make sense. The only thing I would add is that if a player's concept involves a fighter(fighter first)/wizard starting at 1st level, then I'd expect to see the roleplay throughout level 1 reflect that. It bugs me when it's not in the backstory, there's no roleplay at all, it's not mentioned to me, and suddenly at 4th level the player says that the PC is going to be fighter 3/wizard 1.

A couple of years ago I was in a similar situation with collectible gameing cards (I didn't want to relocate again carrying with me that boxes of cards that I haven't been playing with for many years) and I went to eBay, first offering some rare singles (that I found in high demand) and later on some packages (that are harded to sell). The money that I raised from that auctions (after paying the...

It’s an option thing. You get more uses for ki that make it more variable and powerful. But it’s still just expanding options for a resource pool rather than outright gaining more resources and powers. It feels more lateral.

I don’t know where you heard that. They talked about an errrata pass to coincide with the colletor’s editions, as it had been many years since they did an editing pass. But like past errata, I imagine it will just be clarifications and not “fixes”.

Yeah, the two other minions are a tough fight - but then again, this is supposed to be the climactic encounter for the 1st level party, so it's presumably designed to be tough. But as for the big "villain", yes, he should be able to escape easily before most of any regular-sized adventuring group should be able to get into a position to potentially block him. One of his minions is positioned...

So, in today's Dragon Talk, there is a Lore You Should Know where Perkins talks about a vampire named Artor Morlin: apparently, he was going to appear in Dragon Heist but got cut, has some small role in Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and has plans "which will be revealed soon-ish." Could be that he has a role to play in the next AP, based on what Perkins was laying down: not sure what that might...

He said people felt like the costs are too much, not that they are in fact off. I doubt it will ever be erratad.

Chapter 208 The interior of the grove was quiet, almost hushed. Even the cold breeze didn’t seem to penetrate into the space between the giant trees. In fact, it was noticeably warmer, despite the lack of light. The interlaced canopy was so dense that the forest floor was wreathed in a perpetual twilight. The ground was covered with a dense layer of decaying matter. It was slippery, and...

Chapter 208 has the better cliffhanger, so I'm going to double-post today. Happy Friday! * * * Chapter 207 They reached the Green Tower around mid-afternoon the next day. The forest thickened as they got further from the marsh, but the undergrowth receded and they were able to make good time. The ground rose slowly, enough to be noticeable but not enough to slow their progress.

Does to me, I do it the same. The class doesn't define the character, just her abilities.

Whoa. You should climb down off that high horse lest you fall. Incoherent? No, sir, no such admission. I thonk knowledge skills are incoherent. Roll to remember? Nah. Incorporating them into active use (approach and goal) is challenging because of how 5e built them like 3e knowledge checks. I already purpose them to discover things -- ie, history lets you more easily discover knowledge...

What magic items would be well-suited for the night hag Widow Groat's personal lair? I'm open to homebrew items, older D&D items, DMG items, or items from other published resources. So far, the PCs have found a little treasure and minimal magic items (scrolls & potions, a cape of the mountebank, and a homebrew Lifeblade). Based on their feedback ("give us more!"), and my own reading of the...
