Finona Duvall in 4e has absolutely no skill trainings. This conflicts with how she is supposed to be an arcane researcher (Arcana training is required to detect magic, for one), and with how she is supposed to be a viable double agent whom the party can bring along the train (this would suggest Bluff training). Finona Duvall's Pathfinder incarnation has ranks in Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge...

A creature could be resistant, immune to, or even healed by fireballs. That's why information gathering is valuable. Sure charm is only an auto-win if the DM allows it to be, but that's much the same as saying if the DM doesn't actively road block it, which is true of literally everything in the game. As the DM I believe that it's my job to be not only entertaining, but even more...

You go back to the 70s and 80s and you can find some really wild and wacky stuff. I guess publishers where less risk-averse back then! Dungeonland and Land Beyond the Magic Mirror, based on Lewis Carrol; Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, based on Metamorphis Alpha; and there where a couple of Conan - based modules, the exact names I can't remember.

So foreshadowing, essentially. But then doesn't this run up against the problem of railroading? Telegraphing too far in advance presupposes certain PC actions in response to the stimuli.

I don't know Cortex+ well, added to which this is a tricky question because many games wouldn't be very satisfying with this type of 'Train with Yoda / Han is Frozen' action resolution. But I think it's correct to identify it with a troupe or faction-based play, where the PCs can and do act reasonably independently while driving towards a common faction goal. So it doesn't really work for,...

I am biased because I really like EN Publishing's campaigns (and I am doing the 5e conversion), but I would suggest War of the Burning Sky. It hits a lot of your points: It is for 5e, saving you the conversion. Each encounter includes a means to adjust to your number of PCs. It has an included setting with distinct people groups, nations, and history. PC options are included to more closely...

How important is it, to your DM style, that the PCs encounter foes which are closely matched to their abilities? I'm happy with a game in which the PCs don't know whether a foe will be easy to defeat, hard to defeat, easy but only if they burn resources, or it's time to run away. If the DM doesn't know either, and both sides of the screen find out the hard way, then so much the better, as long...

Stunts are mostly built around three ideas (though there are more): (1) Add a New Action to a Skill: Use skill A instead of skill B under certain circumstances. e.g., "Backstab. You can use Stealth to make physical attacks, provided your target isn’t already aware of your presence." (2) Add a Bonus to an Action: Usually a +2 bonus to skill action in certain circumstances (e.g., "Gain a +2...

One of the great improvements of 5E that you tend to forget about is doing away with useless third and fourth attacks. I guess we need PF to remind us of exactly how great 5E is in actually fixing 3E's issues.

What on earth are you talking about. In what universe does the Rogue player NOT say "are there any secret doors in this room?" Please stop reflexively defend the indefensible. Why someone would go to the trouble of making a "secret" door that everybody finds... it makes no sense. In truth, it makes you wonder if the writer understands how the game rules work.

The huhhoad is a 3.5 OGL creature created by Ogdoad in roughly 2004. You are missing an "H", which is why your Google search is coming up empty. I think you aren't really supposed to know what it is as it is fairly obscure (which I suppose works for an extraplanar creature). Biomantic is more of a description than a template that is applied to monsters. They are in appendix B of the Complete...

I got into D&D during 1e. When I read the books, I misread hit dice and thought hit dice equaled hit points, so a 4 hit die monster had 4 hit points. Two things puzzled me at that point. First, giants and such were REALLY easy to kill for how highly the books ranked them. Second, why the heck did some monsters have 8+4 hit dice when they should have just told me 12?! I figured it out before...

I have the other opinion in these discussions, not having a problem running a fun and effective game at any level. We used feats; everyone had plenty of magic items; and at least one PC multiclassed. One PC was a GWM champion with a Defender greatsword that frequently had foresight cast on her. 1. I converted Age of Worms to 5e and ran the campaign from levels 1 to 20 over 3 years. We had a...

Of course 5e supports high lv play. You only need 7 things: A PHB, A DMG, a MM, a set of dice, a pen/pencil, a notebook, and your imagination. You do have all of those things, right? WoTC can sell you the first 3 or 4 of those. WalMarts got you covered for the pen & paper. The imagination? That ones on you. Official adventures top out around 11th lv? Yeah, that's intentional. It occurs to me that, in general, mechanics may not be the best place to look for creating suspense in RPGs. As soon as you have a player doing math to see uncertainty or danger looming, they're out of the immersive moment, and dong metagame analysis - logical thinking - which isn't what you want when you want suspense, right? You want visceral thinking. I may not have missed it earlier in...

Which makes sense, except you then have the meta-issue of Luke's player deciding to quit before things get dangerous for Han. If they see these assets start to build up, the threat to his friends become obvious, and they are apt to stop before the situation gets so critical that Han ends up in carobonite.

IMHO, putting on my AD&D player's cap for a minute, it is rarely a good idea to waste time in a combat situation 'setting up' anything. There's a great deal of value in doing that AHEAD of combat, but once you're in combat the business should be to follow the cardinal rule of Musashi, who said "Every movement of the sword should be a killing blow."
