This seems unreasonably hyperbolic; you are creating an artificial crisis. This is hardly the problem you are fabricating here. Let's consider another case that does not involve deities. I create a character with a backstory pertaining to my family clan that I have also invented. A new player joins the game or a PC dies and a player re-rolls a new character. Having heard about my character's...

Just to bring some reality into this fantasy game... The male Bald Eagle (ranging between 7-14 pounds) can carry a 15 pound mule deer. Crown Eagles, with a wingspan of two metres, can lift a mandrill monkeys which weight 40-80 pounds. I'm guessing the 60 pound is it's cut off point if not lower. Crown Eagles can weigh up to 10-11 pounds. Note this is a lift not a carry. In D&D you have the...

I agree that a 12-foot mako ought to be Large. The thing is, most mako sharks are considerably shorter than that. The largest makos on record are about that length (according to Wikipedia the records are 3.40m to 3.70m and 4.45m). After wasting investing some time on the internet (this researchgate page was particularly good) it appears male makos are mature at ~200 centimetres and females at...

I can see quite a few ways to go beyond a T-Rex. Flying alone adds +2 effective AC (for +0.5 total CR), up to CR 10. Some sort of chameleon skin for invisibility would be +4 attack roll modifier and +4 AC, for +2 challenge. Adding a swallow ability would also make it more strategically challenging. Although I can't see all of those together on the same creature.

Oh, yes, absolutely agree with this. I probably wouldn't background stuff later on. Maybe I suppose. For example, the monk in my current Thule campaign has a bar. I have no real plans for it, so, AFAIC, I give up nothing doing so. So...

Sorry, what do you think is not weird? I thought it was weird that you have to state that "backgrounding" won't apply to major campaign elements (like a motorbike in a post-apocalyptic game) because that seemed self-evident. If that's what you're responding to, can you say a bit more because I didn't quite get it the first time!

Even if you where to create a Giant T-Rex, it would still just be a great big sack of hp. It's pretty much impossible for a monster to be truly challenging without magical-type abilities, which beasts, pretty much by definition, tend not to have. If you consider the Indominous Rex from Jurassic World, that still wouldn't be all that challenging for a high level party, and is it even still a...

@Hussar, I think the background idea has some merit. At session 0 most of what comes up is - selecting a setting, cosmology, level of magic, the difficulty, playable races/classes, published material allowed, house rules, genre...etc. What hardly or never comes up (at least at my table) is what each player perhaps likes least. It would be a good way for the DM to gauge what would be most...

Tell that to the writers of the old A-series modules. There's an auto-capture in there, and it leads to some potentially very interesting play afterwards (for the first half of A4 anyway; the second half is kinda painful and IMO best done differently somehow). Labyrinths and mazes can be great fun once in a while, but it's easy to overdo it. Agreed. Are you sure about that, that the...

That's guaranteed to generate some interesting roleplaying...

Presumably, thought, some posters think that the GM has a unilateral power to define "major campaign element" - that this is not something where the players might also have authority. It is hands off though in the sense of backgrounding. Note, we have posited that the character's church is backgrounded - it will not be the focus of play. Things like history, setting, icons, are all part of the background. They are not integral to the game and the game isn't about those things. Note, backgrounding doesn't mean that the DM can't do anything with the backgrounded element. ...

I will just add, in a DM-driven story, the big picture is known by the DM, so he would be best aware what will and will not work in a given campaign. Can a DM be too stringent? Sure. Like always, as a player you have to find a DM you believe is fair, respect and trust.

The resolution plays out very differently. "Hostile action" covers any display of hostility, including drawing your sword and preparing to strike (behavior that may be inferred in the "Attack" action when taken in combat.) The readied spell is one which can interrupt the attacker, so casting it before the ranged or melee attack is made is important. If the spell succeeds, the planned ranged or...

Yeah I'm currently loving my Divine Soul sorcerer. Twinned concentration spells are a gas. Twinned Suggestion: "Your friend here has been plotting against you and is going to kill you unless you kill him first." /popcorn

That would indeed remove any problem with cover and barkskin and make cover more intuitive.

For the latter, there are rules for disarming opponents in the DMG (in the additional action options section). For the former, you could try a Divine Soul sorcerer, as that would give you access to both the cleric and sorcerer spell lists, which would make you better at buffing others. The only real limitation is the concentration mechanic, which is purposely designed to limit the amount of...

Taking the attack action and making an attack are also real-world events. The latter also correlates with some event in the fiction. I already gave this example somewhere upthread. It shows that not all instances of making an attack are constituents of taking the attack action. It doesn't show that taking the attack action doesn't include, as a constituent, making an attack. The analogue in...

Unfortunately, the answers you are looking for explicitly not public knowledge. Although you can find descriptions of the Age of Lost Omens here (https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Age_of_Lost_Omens$ for example, the whys and what happens are closely guarded by a small subset of the Paizo staff. It is discussed frequently during their mysteries of Golarion seasons at Paizo con, which you can...

It was never only once per round. I can think of circumstances where you could sneak attack up to four times in one round.

If I wanted to fix anything, it would be to have cover be a penalty to the attack. Like I said, I prefer things like circumstantial and positional modifiers to adjust the active party - not the mostly static baselines.

What can I say? This is the one place where I'm just unwilling to suspend my disbelief between mechanics and story. For some folks it'd be hit points-- how their use and adjudication are completely separate from any sort of in-game reality of getting injured. Yet for hit points I'm right there like you are with Barkskin... not really caring about the integration between the mechanics and...

Interesting. 1. In the games I've played and DM'd the spell would only trigger after the first attack was made. There would be nothing considered to be a hostile action until one character in the game actually performed some hostile action like attacking another. I'm willing to bet that's how 99% of people play too. Most games wouldn't have triggers that reference some out of game...

Well then you believe wrong (at least as far as my DMing is concerned). See, much like these boards are an inappropriate place to air my political views, so too is my game time. Especially so for any game I run at the local shop. So please believe me when I state that my politics is not an influence on my gaming. (Hell, they don't even influence who I game with. For ex; one of my good...

I agree its simple. And understandable to a degree. But it makes no sense. I have barkskin on and no shield. AC 16. My buddy has barkskin and a shield. AC 16. No difference when anyone is trying to hit either of us.....although one of us has more protection.

I really do not see how you could play real life political views in a DnD game. I mean for a start you have Villains who really are Evil rather then merely crooked and illegal aliens that really are Alien.

Yeah, that is how things tend to work in the novels and general story line. Today's villain, is tomorrows savior and vis versa. Even the "Evil" guilds are good guys sometimes.

Looking into Boros Angels, I think they made War Leader Angels and Firemane Angels separate types of Battle Angels to help make sense of both the art and lore. Because Razia and Firemane Angels had four wings, but Aurelia while still a red head, only had two wings. So making them different, but related types fixes this.

Pro 1. This was a design goal. IME it's actually easier to teach new players 5E than 3E/PF, because of the simplicity. 2. See Pro #1 3. More intentional design. Characters can take as long or short as desired to create & level. 4. Sadly, this isn't quite true IME, but a rules lawyer is going to find a way... 5. By allowing the DM the freedom to make the call, rather than a game...
