Re: Warlock/Cleric concepts and fluff I have a character concept (ie fluff) where a cleric of good is tempted by darkness in a morally ambiguous world. Yes, gods of good and evil explicitly 'exist', but they are far removed from the mortal realm, even from 'epic' mortals. In this world, the concept is for me to play a cleric of light that taps into warlock as he delves into a forbidden...

To this last point...I say, so what? I am now willing to kill some sacred cows of fluff. To the extent that classes are balanced, I am fine with sticking with them for the abilities...but am starting to wonder why would it be so terrible to play a warlock who seeks knowledge and power like a wizard (or in my mind as warlocks already do) without a patron at all? It's just fluff and between...

I kinda think that there are two different levels of the issue here. One in a DM issue, and one is a player issue. In a more inclusive age there is a much stronger pressure on DMs to be inclusive in their world building - somewhat dependent on what they know about their group. If you know your group and their expectations conform pretty much to yours then you do not have to worry so much. But if...

Your ad hominems and unsupported claims don't hold much weight here, Emerikol. I am not projecting onto "old school D&D." I hoped that would have been clear in reading my posts. I have only spoken for the worldview that D&D 5e presumes. I have even made that explicit on numerous points, as I have been clear to include "5e" to clarify that this pertains only to 5e. I have not looked into the...

Hriston, I'm somewhat partial to the "hang time" approach if only because it seems to open up some amusing possibilities, but your articulation of your approach to adjudication has been admirably clear. Also, for what it's worth, 4e goes your way (Rules Compendium, p 139): If the creature runs out of movement before landing, it also falls. However, if the jump was part of a move action, the...

As I recall, Toho Studios (who made the Godzilla movies in Japan) were impressed enough with the recent Godzilla movie (where he fought the MUTOs - creatures made up for that movie) that they agreed to allow the US filmmakers to use Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. So unless they make up additional monsters for them to fight, the movie will likely focus on those four. (Although the recent...

I would say that you are artificially limiting a persons movement on their turn because you don't like to leave PCs hanging. Even though they aren't really hanging in the air ... there is no time gap between turns. Poh-tay-toe poh-tah-toe. Neither are "true", both are "true". It's just a different ruling and a different perspective that was addressed in the first few dozen posts.

I think a lot of people underestimate how life changing having a simple light source can be. Add in the fact that continual flame lasts basically forever and requires no maintenance. Unless your spell casters are so rare as to be only rumors I think they would be fairly common. Unless there’s some special circumstance, the DM normally says yes to movement and notes any resulting change in the situation. For example, “As you land on the other side of the chasm, the bad guy’s minions...

Sometimes when talking about RPGs it's helpful to actually talk about RPGs rather than just make stuff up. From Ron Edwards: this isn't what most people are talking about, when we talk about non-railroady Narrativist play. This is kind of a consensual-storytelling, make-it-up-as-we-go, round-robin type thing. Frankly, it's pretty boring in most circumstances and tends to create wandering,...

Yes but the price of rubies is also tied to their availability (and purity and cut for specific items but not for the crap stuff and dust) so if rubies are very rare their base price is higher and the amount of ruby dust needed goes down which makes it easier to find that smaller quantity - unless a GM adds in a setting specific twist to select components. 3e was written from the NPC/world perspective to build a simulation. 5e was written from the PC perspective to serve the needs of an adventuring party exploring dungeons. So what makes sense in the world is the genre and themes that are represented in the campaign. Also, it doesn't cost 50gp, it costs ruby dust. The amount of Continual Flames are limited by the amount of rubies.

My 18th level Warlock uses Glibness (8th level spell) when she wants to ensure success on her Charisma checks. Only once a day, but it lasts an hour and isn't a concentration spell.

So.... about Summon Lesser Demons... my wizard got some great use out of this spell when it was UA and before Xanathar's kinda nerfed it. While I get all the reasons you give a low rating, I feel like it was a very good battlefield control spell. Back then you could pick what demons you summoned, so taking 8 dretches and placing them so that they surround a BBG was pretty effective. They all do...

Abjuration Wizard gets it at 14th level, it's a racial feature for Yuan-ti. Pseudodragons ans Quasits (also possibly other monsters, I'm not sure) have variant rules where they can choose to serve as a familiar, and they then share their Magic Resistance with their master if they're within 10 feet.

For some reason I thought Wizards got it at later levels, or that having a Familiar out in a certain radius granted this. But looking it up that wasn't the case. Unless, this is a case of the Mandela Effect! *DUN DUN DUN-UN-UN-UN!*

I don't care for the ascetics of using a foot bow. I find them to be rather impractical for adventuring or any combat other than siege-craft. So, balance is irrelevant to me. I can't see something like this ever being used in one of my games.

I don't remember where I saw it, but if I recall correctly, something grants Advantage to Saving Throws vs Magic. I can't remember if it was a class feature, race feature, feat, or what. Is anyone able to refresh my memory?

Yea, I think I'll go that route, and maybe just lean more heavily into some of the MA style exploits. I'd want to make sure Players felt like their PC really bested a style where relevant.

I wonder if it would make more sense for the beholder to have to hit with an eye ray (like a caster has to hit with scorching ray, and if it succeeds, then the target makes whatever save is most relevant to see if the effect sticks. Maybe that’s too much fuss, though. (I’m certainly not a big fan of the arcane archer’s attack roll + saving throw special attacks, but then those are much more...

That doesn't sound very exciting or fun to me. An action movie where the heroes take their time and methodically go about their business just doesn't sound appealing. I also can't think of any adventures I've played in recent memory where this is the case. All of the WotC adventures have been like this. The only place they have faltered have been the random encounters over wilderness travel. ...

My highest is a ten encounter day playing an old 1e dungeon. I had gotten rid of short rests and everyone worked off of long rests but the results were similar. A drained party. Exceptionally fun, too.

When I am planning adventures and making maps, I try to build in area for the PCs to rest. There may be a side room or secret room that they find, or even something where it sends the monsters in another direction. My problem is when the PCs choose to rest, which is fine and they most likely should at that point, but it is how the monsters react to them and changing the other encounters to...

I find that the 6-8 adventure day is realistic only in certain circumstances - like in this instance there was a strong "time pressure". Now - let's be honest here, the party was going to arrive in the nick of time as long as they made reasonable efforts to hurry... BUUUT if they hadn't pushed, "oh I don't have the right spell list for this let's go tomorrow" or whatever... well they would have...

I see it like this: Gender roles and norms exist, just IRL and they mostly conform to how it is in reality, at least, in human societies and those that have similar cultures. However, due to the presence of magic, gods, adventurers and such, those roles and norms are a lot less strict than they were IRL through history. Even in reality, there were always individuals, who didn't conform...
