Sure, this is very likely the case. But then this is more about the GM using the game mechanics responsibly, so to speak. Ideally, he wonít be pushing an agenda. But it certainly seems possible, no? This goes back to it being more a case of GM performance. Separate of the rules or mechanics or even the chosen style, the GM can perform well or poorly. Pemertonís premise and much of the...

The way you streamline the Arcane Lock works great - minimizes the intrusion of rolling the same thing over and over. Where you're just highlighting one character doing the same thing over and over, I'm with you to simplify mechanically. The other issue about progress on an adventure coming to a stop on a failed check is something DMs need to dealwith in many cases. Did the players miss a...

David Eddings has a whole series (Elenium, the Diamond Throne is the first book) where the order of paladin-like knights learned magic from the 'old gods' to help their mission. An god-like avatar points out that their god does love them and would've provided, but isn't upset.

I tend to go with 100-75% of hps: the hit hits, but adrenalin takes over and no effect or only minor outward damage (the PC will feel it after the fight is over, but not during the fight), from 75-50%: bruises, small cuts, maybe an inspiration point if the PC wipes some blood of his/her face on his/her finger and looks at it, gets mad, and attacks again, 50-25%: at this point the pro wrestling...

Thatís the purpose. Itís not for the players to use, at for the DM to use for his wizards. Several spells are in the PHB for that purpose, so their is a reason for them when the DM uses them. As a DM if you are running the players into a wizards tower you better have Glyphs everywhere, Guards and Wards running, etc. I like the idea of the flammable carpet. I used the glyph on the floor...

Glyphs of Warding - both protective and offensive - should be everywhere in a wizard's home so they can be easily activated. Indeed, activating a GoW could be a Lair Action. Consider also the floor trap: the wizard has a highly flammable carpet. The carpet covers numerous GoW. Burn the carpet and the floor becomes a huge trap. Even better if the ignition of the carpet is initiated by another...

Well, the main problem I see is that the amount of gold varies greatly by campaign. That said, if I wanted to create a magic item list, I would start by assigning values to the magic weapons. I would go with a utility-based system, and I would begin by the assumption that a silvered weapon is 100gp. (PHB 148). From there, a magic, +0 weapon should cost 1000gp. Given the huge advantages...

Here's a guideline: Taking players occasionally out of their comfort zone by taking away something they normally rely on is good. Look, you've been jailed and have no equipment. Or in your case "this specific NPC nemesis can't be spotted". Regularly negating a character ability because you don't want to deal with it is a dirty move. "in the rules" is not the same as "that's what I think the rules mean." I know that can be confusing for some people. What is in the rules is that the spell ends if you attack or cast a spell. Attacks don't have to cause damage, and not everything that causes damage is an attack. Spells don't always cause saving throws, and saving throws aren't always the result of spells.

NPCs are not bound to have the same abilities as Player character Classes do. This doesn't mean that they aren't generally bound by the same rules: unless they have a capability that says otherwise for example, they still have to make stealth checks to sneak up on a PC. However it is generally perfectly fine to allow one-off rituals, spells or similar capabilities that don't appear in the...

I ordered my lizardfolk barbarian (I've made a lot more characters on there), it is a bit pricey, and ordering physical does take a while, but their good quality, and if you have access to a nice 3D printer, you can cut both those issues down by a considerable margin.
