Chapter 270 The meeting with the tabaxi elders took place at dusk. Bredan could still hardly believe what he was seeing as he and a select cohort of the shipwrecked survivors were escorted to the Hall of Feathers. The tabaxi—they had finally learned the name of their hosts, thanks to Quellan’s tongues spell—lived near the jungle canopy, on platforms erected around the trunks of huge trees....

My problem with your setup is that it reads as if you get advantage (uses the relentless barrage of sword swings to catch the enemy off balance) on your shield attack which the mechanics don't give it. The way I set it up you get advantage because of the opponent be off balance/down. But as you say, your table your playstyle. Having the shield master shove when you want you can have of...

Also with backgrounds, be aware that the default rule allows players to pick any two skills, any combination of 2 languages/tools, any equipment package, and any background feature. That's not an option or a variant rule, that's in the Basic Rules right on page 36 under "Customizing Backgrounds." I can provide a bit of context here. I originally got the name Obox-ob from the list of other demon lords that was printed on page 35 of the 1st edition Monster Manual II. For whatever reason, the sound of the name really appealed to me, and I ended up using it as the name of the primary bad guy deity for my homebrew setting, back in the late 80s. His footprint in my homebrew continued to grow...

Something to consider here - most great fantasy stories are allegories. The elements of the story stand in for something else, either intentionally or accidentally. When the story is not about the enemy, but the enemy is merely a force that opposes the protagonist, we don't need much depth for that enemy in the story. It can be superficial, simplistic and a faceless evil to be slaughtered....

Well, you say that alignment doesn't really mean anything, and that it's all just a "legacy" notion so therefore the logical conclusion is that any race is allowed since alignment doesn't matter. But then if a DM is up front about how is viewed in their world, they're a bad DM. Personally I just don't allow races that don't make sense, which includes non-evil dragonborn because they don't fit...

The extent to which a GM is able to veto/gate the first approach will depend primarily on table conventions. Off the top of my head I can't think of any...

The feat, to me, uses the relentless barrage of sword swings to catch the enemy off balance, allowing for a quick flourish to knock them down at the end as they’ve been so focused on the primary attacks. That’s why you can do it extra as a bonus. Without the string of attacks setting...

The players in my games make ability checks regularly in combat without changing the Help action. The DM just has to present situation where it's a possibility. Players shouldn't want to make ability checks, of course, but it...

The meaningful consequence of failing to Hep means your ally doesn’t get advantage and might not succeed in their attack and the monster goes on living. But we digress. The fact that you don’t need to roll means that skills get used less in combat then it could have potentially. I lament this but not enough to actually implement it in my games...probably.

I'm not sure what rule you're referring to. I'm not aware of anything like that in D&D 5e. As for attacking low-AC monsters, I ask for an attack roll if the monster is defending, which makes the outcome uncertain plus there's a meaningful consequence of failure (the monster goes on living).

Really. When I play, I love making rolls. You’d use a help action when your attack is ineffective, usually. That’s when I use the help action. So, if it’s between doing nothing effective or having to make an easier role (or do a role using a skill you are better at) to help an ally do something effective, I’d still choose to roll.

Because I use the Variant Ability Score variant rule, I dropped Acrobatics from my game and just have players make either STR (Athletics) or DEX (Athletics) checks as applicable.

Anything balance related. Slippery surfaces, tight walking space, dodging things, things that require quick reflexes that aren't a save. I tend towards using Athletics for more strong-man stuff, throwing things (that aren't attacks, like Shotput or Discus) or moving heavy things.

I wasn't specific in what defensive stance meant. (Dodge action) but I will let this play out. I imagine Everret becoming a new man after all this.

I guess he'll try to kill his way through. If he can drop one, he'll push forward to R24, but not provoke - yet.

VR bars are a thing. So you go to a bar IRL to go to virtual bar? Do you hang with real people to hang with virtual people? I know people text others sitting next to them.

I get another pilot in another tie fighter, thus doubling my survivability. Actually I’ll need about 20 more of these things.

Describing what you want to do amounts to stating a goal and an approach to that goal. It does not have to be a complicated or technical statement or require any expertise on the part of the player. "I want to make a Stealth check" is not a statement of goal and approach. At best it just implies one. What it is is a player failing to perform his or her role in the game and that slack is often...

I mean, sure. But what’s the party composition? How much combat does this group get into? Is there a healer or ready source of potions? Does the DM roll damage or use static values? Guide’s a guide. Adjust any number of the thousand variables you have, to taste. Edit to add: you spend about 5 minutes at level one and 7 at level two, anyway. IMO a proper use-case is between levels 3-10....

I think a lot of these skills would get more use if you had to make a skill check to use the Help action. I can describe how I leap across a table-top, then somersault down and slide between a person's legs and confound them as my ally smacks them in the face with advantage. That's the Help action. It requires no roll. I kind of miss having to do a roll for that kind of thing. 3e, the...

I like how you used the proficiency bonus, even though the "but that's too much" comment becomes real appropriate at first level.

No worries. :) As long as you're applying disadvantages to cancel off advantages I'd likely have no problem with it were I in your game. I tend to prefer the zero-to-hero arc, particularly as it helps allow for some long-term growth and change during a long campaign. Indeed, but in my game almost all of that happens at char-gen which to me largely falls in the meta realm anyway. The...

This is the curse of modern life, there's way more content being created than can possibly be kept up with! You have to choose the right mix for you. Critical Role is a big investment, I kind of wish they'd have their staff produce a digest version that's around 1 hour bringing in all the highlights and leaving out some of the filler.

Here: on a short rest you recover hp equal to NHD + N*CON. N = your proficiency modifier HD = your class’ hit die (d10, d8, etc) CON = your constitution modifier (which I hope is a positive value). Thus a 5th level fighter with 17 Constitution would recover on average 25 HP per rest out of their maximum of 49. Same fighter at level 20 would recover 51 out of their max of 175.

Yeah, the Athletics/Acrobatics conundrum is similar to Perception/Investigation except that it doesn't have nearly the impact that Perception and Investigation do. As far as parkour goes specifically, it's probably a combination. Climbing, pulling yourself up, and jumping would fall under Athletics but landing from high falls properly and running across narrows ledges and beams is Acrobatics....
