I like Paladin as it is in 5E, I find it just as overpowered as every other class(every class has moments of OMG) and I love the fluff behind it. Not a lot of my players decide to give Paladin a shot however,I wish more did.

I have decided on something after one of our member inquired about Gust of Wind. Gust of Wind is an Evocation Spell, not Conjuration. That means it does not create wind, it creates the energy that manipulates the wind. That said, I would have no problems allowing that energy to, instead, push the water, but it’s not that simple, says physics. Water is is much more dense than air, so...

HoML's implementation of Inspiration is virtually stolen from this article, though I think I changed one or two minor things (its been a good while since I read it, so I'm not sure). It works rather well. Of course what they are is simply not driven to engage with a system that is entirely secondary to the main thrust of play. I played in a fairly long 5e campaign. Nobody ever used their...

The priest’s consideration of bandits was a valid one. Crime was a rarely reported activity near Kalair and upon its most-travelled roads, but times were changing. Fear was blowing in on a Sandsborn wind, bringing with it the anxiety and unstability that criminals might feast upon. Surrounding a stranger and awakening him, wasn’t going to breed much trust. Praise Suru though, Dain and Otiroth...

You're operating on the assumption that he would *only* apply "setbacks" when multiple characters are attempting the same check. We won't know for sure unless he decides to weigh in on the topic, but it's entirely possible that "setback" is simply how he describes the consequences of failure, even when it's just a single character making the check. I didn't see anything in his original posts to...

Sure it does. It is everything that 4e powers were accused of. The mechanical effects of the rule are divorced (dissociated) from narrative logic! Nothing could clearer. So what? How would it be accomplished? The incentive is simply one side of a mechanical economy. It isn't about the player getting ahead, so it is hard to even call it an incentive. Not sure why you couldn't do...

I wish smite was the only issue, then I'd just change that but in a game so tightly tied to bounded accuracy getting +3 or +4 to all saves is a huge deal. Even my melee optimized Tempest ended up stealing the show more times than not. I do think that the 5e Paladin is the overall strongest class from top to bottom though.

This goes right back to the OP! Absolutely. I don't get this idea that "different" = "narrower", or that "GM curated experience" = "caters to/generates a wide range of experiences". For instance: if player X wants to play Fate, and player Y wants to play Moldvay Basic, a game in which the GM curates Ideals/Bonds/Flaws for X, while rolling wandering monsters for Y, isn't giving either of...

Compare Manbearcat's example of DitV, where the system establishes a relationship with the PC's brother; or In a Wicked Age (that's on my mind befause I GMed a short session of it not too long ago) which establishes interlinked and conflicting "best interests" for each character (PC and NPC). Agree, Divine Smite as written in PHB is the only real problem, it easily leads to what I've heard called the "Crit Fisher" or similar, i.e. you try and maximise your ability to land critical hits, then use Divine Smite on your crit so you get double a large pool of dice. I'd much rather it worked like most other spells and abilities - you declare you're using Divine Smite (e.g. as a Bonus...

The main difference I see that boosts Palladin in 5th vs. earlier editions is that they can declare smite *after* they confirm a successful to-hit roll. Every earlier edition had to declare smite before the to-hit roll and I had *never* landed a successful smite until 5th edition. I started in 1984.
