It is pretty much the official definition since 1ed. As we can read in ADnD phb: Each character has a varying number of hit points,' just as monsters do. These hit points represent how much damage (actual or potential) the character can withstand before being killed. A certain amount of these hit points represent the actual physical punishment which can be sustained. The remainder, a...

One thing that I have found helpful is to find an active message board or story hour that is associated with the mega-adventure/adventure path. This way you have a resource for your plot questions and advice on when your players do something a bit different. Monte's boards had a dedicated section for RttToEE and it helped me immensly the first time I ran it.

Because I as a player (and most of my play group) did not know the gods or the kings or the city locations until we had played enough. Just like how many puzzles are solved by the player with a few hints (depending) and not intelligence checks, information about the world is not necessarily known by the being playing the character. Having a handout or orientation session would solve this, but...

To address each... *Races? Sure, not a problem. *Stats? Those line up exactly. Most of the people we have on our side don't agree. A 20 Dex goes a lot farther in 5e than it does in Pathfinder. At least in our opinion, a single +1 to anything can be a game changer in a party. That doesn't really seem the same in PF.

The easiest way is to just use the 5e description/mods. The hard way is to open the Ultimate Race Guide (or whatever it's called - they have a whole book of odd PC races complete with rules for...

I know, I know, the verisimilitude of hit points has been an ongoing argument for decades... This is something I would like to try when I start up my next game: All hit point "damage" is simply small, accumulated weariness. Damage is not broken arms, sliced open bowels, or arrows to the back. It's the blow to the shield that takes a little more out of you, it's the sore muscle from...

If you want to tie it to something other than exhaustion, I personally rule that failed death saving throws only go away on a short or long rest. If it's insufficient, have them take a failed death saving throw on initially going down too (although I'd recommend also upping the number before death to 4, so it effectively stays the same for the first down).

However, if you say that they had to bump up the spell level in order to account for an extra feature of the spell, I can't see how that in any way argues against the idea that they have a rule set that defines how much can be put in a spell of a given level. I think I'd still argue against it. I think that a player reading the 2e PHB who rolled a paladin would be a little surprised when suddenly told they had to choose a god to follow after reading through the class description. As is, whether or not we agree hardly matters, what does matter is that in 5e, no gods are required for the paladin.

I was considering it more against the mid-level ring. Imagine a single wizard being able to hold you in a wall of force with a cloudkill. But there are some great lower level spells. Fly, haste, even spider climb. And it is not just for the arcane casters. How about having both spiritual guardians with moonbeam or spike growth? I think it is an overly large boost to casters.

I've participated in many a thread with only three or four other participants, but said threads had views in the hundreds or low thousands, so, clearly, others were interested in/benefiting from the discussion. Seeing the thread count may draw others who otherwise wouldn't think to check in on a relatively low post count thread.

Combining level tiers with rarity might give a better baseline power. The item's tier (5/8/11/14/17) sets their base price, which is modified by their rarity or if they're consumable. Which is then fine tuned. A little like the 4e Essentials treasure system that combined level with rarity.

I would take a step back before applying a new rule to fix a problem. You're experiencing a natural outcome of the combination of several factors: 1. Dropping to zero hit points results in a level of exhaustion 2. Your campaigns feature adventures with time pressure 3. Exhaustion takes multiple long rests to remove So, to me, the issue is that combats you're featuring in adventures...

I have lots of scenery. And I do find the stuff I want to use, is the stuff I don't need that often. Were currently in the middle of the Zeitgeist campaign, and I made some railroad tracks to use. They come up a few times in the campaign. However i may never use them again. I think the things I use the most are walls, tables chairs, pools lava or water , raised sections ,trees, hills,fences,and...

Instead of creating a new house rule to deal with unexpected fallout from a previous house rule, you may also consider changing the original house rule. You could just say that falling to zero gives a temporary level of exhaustion, that only lasts until the next short rest, or you could go with a different mechanic entirely and say that dropping to zero reduces your max HP by 10% for the rest of...

Do note that it is the monster's Challenge Rating that sets the hoard and not your own level. Thus the shift between tiers isn't as abrupt as you might think, since you might win a tier III haul already at level 9, say. (A level 9 party defeating a CR 12 dragon for instance). So the probability of a "next tier hoard" (which is worth approximately ten times as much) steadily increases for each...

TWF, Polearm Master, and the Slayer's Prey feature all take a bonus action. You only get 1 of those a turn, so it's probably not your best option to try and combine them. Rangers can go sword and shield. Or perhaps take gloomstalker for more stealth focus. Dex allows both TWF and Bows. Easy enough to switch. Polearm master requires Str, though you can carry some javelins. Stealth...

Yes, this seems in-keeping with the D&D 5e design philosophy -- draw on existing mechanics rather than create new ones. Then, if the player sets up an effective and entertaining flashback, he or she could potentially earn the inspiration back received once away from Velkynvelve.

Nothing in the GH material that I can recall suggests this. Some of the Greater Gods, like Boccob, don't receive much worship; and some of the more popular gods, like St Cuthbert and Pholtus, are only Lesser Gods. The first time I remember coming across the idea was an article in Dragon magazine - maybe issue 92, which would be c 1984, I think.

Anyone using it to clean themselves for 5 minutes comes completely clean and smells fresh. he also gains advantage on his next Charisma or charisma skill check. Once per week when used in conjunction with a Short Rest it can remove one level of exhaustion.

My take? It depends on the oath, god and pact. I run Greyhawk. If an Oath of Devotion Paladin of Heironeous forms a pact with an angel in the service of Heironeous or even other divinities of law and good, I think there's synergy that the deity accepts. If the same paladin forms a pact with a fiend, say, Mammon? I think he's likely to break his oath, even in the very forging of the pact. If an...

If you look at page 272 in the DMG you will see that Overrun and Tumble are both, an action and bonus action. As for Wildshape/ Combat Wildshape, when you become a 2nd level druid, you gain the ability to wildshape as an action (page 66 PHB). However, if you are a 2nd level Circle of the Moon druid, your wildshape is actually a combat wildshape and this ability is a bonus action (pg 69 PHB).
