Let me see if I can't produce a more jovial reply, now that I've gotten a good night's sleep, Cap'n Kobold :) Oh, I agree. I just think there's no good reason to make the longsword the average. In general D&D-iana, it might be considered the "standard" weapon. But we've seen enough "nobody's using longswords" threads to know that is not reflective of the truth in this edition. And this thread...

I do use skill challenges in 5e. However, I follow two rules: 1- even a well made skill challenge is just a framework, not the be-all end-all. The DM must be ready to improvise and go with the flow, even if it means throwing half of the skill challenge out the window; 2- skill challenges are a DM's tool, and player should not be aware they are playing one. A well executed skill challenge is...

I think a degree of light touch is helpful, and being flexible from context to context, as the logic of each situation demands. I think this sort of rigidity in interpretation undoes some of the benefits of the fact that a given episode of hp loss can be whatever you need it to be at the moment of narration. I think Rod Staffwand articulated this really clearly: Cortex+ Heroic mostly...

No, it means that the designers, who lavished a lot of attention on dragons, thought this was an interesting idea to...

Saw Black Panther today. Good but not what I expected. The "greatness" of the movie isn't the plot or acting. It is the attempt to use proper African myth / life. Still good. Course, I believed no one in my family was bias or the sort. Perhaps not bias but they are ignorant. Wife had issues with the use of plates to stretch the lips and ears. Had to let her know this was a social...

My absolute favorite RPG activity is creating the setting. I have created dozens of homebrews. It's a curse! That said, I will sometimes run in a published setting, if the adventure is really good and is tied in to the setting. (Curse of Strahd, Holdenshire Chronicles, and Princes of the Apocalypse are good examples that I've run, and I'm itching to give Zeitgeist a try once it's fully...

Ugh. That's not a comment on Veins of the Earth; I haven't read it. That's a comment on the link. What an awful, awful review. I have no respect for any review that spends so much time bashing another product, or (especially) the people who like that other product, as a way of trying to build up the one it's reviewing. Unprofessional and unpleasant.

There was a kickstarter a few years back for the Dungeons & Dragons Documentary. It was running behind, of course, but it seemed to be moving forward. From what I am seeing now, I can't see that the project is still in the works. Now I'm worried that I'm out some money. Anyone know what happened to this project?

This seems like taking, "I don't like it, and this is why" way too personally. Edit: If you'd like to know my reasons for why I experience so many D&D settings this way, I'd be glad to elaborate, but arguing over matters of taste seems pointless to me.

Gentlemanly Scent Stick This item, when rubbed on the odorous portions of your anatomy, makes them smell fresh and clean. The effect lasts for at least 4 hours, probably a day, maybe up to 24 hours if you are fortunate. You cannot take CHR penalties due to body odor while this effect lasts, but it is DM's discretion if you gain any bonus from it. Individuals of the new Gentleman class are...

OK, here's my attempt at a cogent response. First I would note that D&D (as an example) never calls out what the fiction proscribes, or what it prescribes, except specifically where it intersects a mechanic (I will use 1e as my example if it matters since I'm most familiar with it). So, for example the rules state that every 10' a character falls deals 1d6 damage. Likewise when your hit...

No but it does say "If there's ever any questions whether something you're doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack." If I wrote that sentence, I would mean that if you aren't sure whether something is an attack, you should use the presence of an attack roll to decide. And if you wrote that sentence without meaning that, I'd say you...

I prefer not to script the outcome of my games, and breaking the rules scripts my games to turn out the way I want them to. For me, this pretty much applies to die rolls. I've not really had any other area that would tempt me to transgress. I've had this conversation with my players and they're cool with it, which should be the standard for any game regardless of your personal philosophy. If they...

Such as? The rules come into play to resolve uncertainty which the DM establishes. If the DM decides an NPC does something with certainty, then it does, with no references to the rules required. There's no need to break rules in this scenario.

Every part of the Rod should be found in a different climate (prairie, jungle, tundra, desert, swamp, underwater, what else is good?). This allows you to have the PCs meet up with different animals / encounters as the adventure progresses. If you want time travel, offer a limited Time Machine. It doesn't go anywhere on a map, just between yesterday and tomorrow. The point is to explore the...

I'd really recommend giving the idea of Mega damage another look - it'd help stuff make way more sense in my head. I wouldn't go with a damage multiplier/divisor myself, though. Instead, I'd have it so that damage from lower stuff (personnel -> vehicle, for instance) can't do anything against higher stuff - after all, a handgun will never be able to completely destroy a house or a tank - while...

Talin stays to the back as the ghost appears. He had thought the ghost was just a hoax. He had not expected to actually find one in the tomb. When the ghost says the girl is in trouble he curses under his breath. He needed to find the girl to gain trust in the town. When Terry mentions going to the quarry Talin nods in agreement. White Plume Mountain (From Yawning Portal) offers a straight-forward plot: Find these three Magic Weapons. There are plenty of fights, encounters, puzzles, and traps along the way. The dungeon itself, conveniently, splits into three parts. Hmmm, I wonder what that signifies? But the fun part - and where you can start writing your own plot, at whatever level of complication you desire - is:...

But if you took damage it put unplayable cards into your deck that took up space in your hand, but you could give up...

Maybe try some more classic adventures? They tend to have more going on then first meets the eye, but plot is very straight forward. Tales from the Yawning Portal has Forge of Fury that I am running right now. The backstory is well done, but each part is pretty straight forward. As for the PCs, once they are in a dungeon, they only thing they "have" to find is like a key to open a door. ...

I find the problem here is that you discourage players from taking long shots, or contributing to anything outside their bailiwick, and if nobody is willing to attempt anything, then the hazard... does nothing? Personally I do this sort of thing much closer to a combat, wherein the PCs advance their cause by successful actions (rolls or otherwise), and the hazard advances it's own cause in...

Bounded accuracy being the idea that even after level 20, a PCs armor class doesn't really improve massively? Good point. So by 2nd drafts do you mean looking over each creature and tweaking them? Because for instance there seems to be big power differences between Garl and Bane, despite not a huge CR difference, so I'd assume you made Garl using newer ideas.

If a Sha'ir was needed to free them then the words would need to come from the heart. Salahuddin turns to the two whirlwinds that separated from the others. He would need a good look at those he is to pardon before he could speak those words. "Ashtigal and Yehiena please come...
