This is (ostensibly) a reply to a post which actually set out (part of) the role of the GM in DitV. I think it's very telling that once the role of the GM is not to manage secret backstory, but rather to establish situation and play the opposition within that situation, you describe the GM as "useless". What you call the "useless" GM is what I call the non-railroading GM.

I agree, the Sorcerer works better as a Wizard archetype. Heh, the 5e Sorcerer is a case where the class survived because of a good story − despite the fact that its mechanics are mostly redundant or trivial.

I view alignment as a code of conduct. It defines what a character is willing or unwilling to do. For some classes it is easier to view than others. A good warlord does not use child soldiers, an evil one does not care. Yet this is still shaded by fields of grey. What if the action is a last ditch defence?

Wilhelm grimaces as he realizes the worg has lost interest in the sound of a baby. With but a thought he lets the illussory cry reach a high note, then stop abruptly. Already the warlock is casting his next spell, one of his standard beams of arcane magic, and he takes one step out of his corner to unleash the energy in the worgís direction. Dismiss the Minor Illusion, then cast Eldritch...

I think it's ok if magical weapons are rare, as long as the ones without magical weapons get something else, and at higher level the reverse. So a level 5 fighter could find a +1 sword that can shed light (always use the quirks table folks!) and his barbarian friend would get a cloak of protection. At level 15 the fighter is still using his trusty magical sword, but he's also found a ring of...

Conceivably, you could put +4 as the floor of effectiveness, but still allow +5 or higher to work if someone has the score to do it. So a Barb 20 could still benefit from his 24 Str and Con. A 20 is still better, but you have to decide if a +1 to attack and damage is worth all the resources you might have to spend to get there.

And therein lies the disagreement. You and others see each god and what is important to them as back-and-white, others of us see possible shades of grey (even with a god like Gruumsh). So all that's left is for WarpedAcorn to decide what to do with their player now that they've received the requested feedback from the rest of us of what could/should/would be possibly done.

You can have as many you want... but just bear in mind you're probably only going to see two or three actually have any place in the game you end up running. So my advice is to not go too deep on fleshing them all out, but rather wait until you see which one or two your players latch onto. Then you can just worry about fleshing out the churches for those one or two and perhaps a third one that...

I use it as an identification. - chosen by the player and can be changed by the player - tells the DM in shorthand roughly how the PC feels about some concepts and maybe how they react - enables the DM to reward role play that matches alignment - allows the group to limit some activity, like PVP or murderising by forbidding evil alignments - useful as a...

Hit dice based healing and overnight healing were inspired by 4E IMHO, they are not exactly the same. They are a lot closer to 4E though than 1-3 hp overnight or your level in hp overnight from AD&D and 3E. The healing is a bit closer to Star Wars Saga where you could get 1-3 second winds a day (1 by default another 2 via talents/feats IIRC). Rapid non magical healing did not come from pre 4E...

There were a lot of weak classes, PrCs, etc in 3E and 4E that did not really need to be a class. Scout, Berzerker, Avenger, Warmage, Healer, Ardent, Warden all come to mind. Even alchemist and artificer argueably are a mage subclass, the artificer was a mage subclass in 2E (it predates Eberron). You can also make a good argument for warlord as fighter (I think it can be its own thing its...
