It depends on the cosmology. I use my own cosmology. If one is using the 1e Greyhawk cosmology, the positive energy plane is located inside the ethereal plane. So, make the faerie and the positivity into the shallow (bordering the material plane) and the deep of the same plane. If one is using the 5e Forgotten Realms cosmology, then make positive plane pervade the multiverse. The...

True. Whoever laid the eggs, could keep track of those particular eggs, if she chose to, even in communal hatching rooms/caves, and she could take an interest in the young who hatched from those eggs. Heck, egg-layers or fire-tenders could mark eggs, perhaps with wax if they don't have felt-tip pens. I figure that's a matter of each clan's traditions and taboos. Clans which associate closely with...

How did the cleric do for the other 5-7 encounters in the day? If the answer is "the party didn't have 5-7 more encounters that day", then you really have no comparison to evaluate. The #1 point I hear about encounters being easier than expected has to do with characters with daily resources who get to use them in just a few encounters. It is an often repeated myth that harder encounters...

I'm not 100% I have your concept, let me restate and see if I have it right. During a rest, HD spent can regain spell slots as well as HPs for full casters, at the rate of 5 HPs per spell slot level. This will result in more total spell slots per day, not replacing normal recovery. I think this would be very powerful. And common. But not common as in regaining a bunch of 1st level spells....

For IRL instance, the horses at the Kentucky Derby got too gracile, light, fast, and fragile. Broken legs on the track are a bad sign indeed. The breeders have had to look more at robust horses that can take...

Why put it on the sheet? Just say passive x is 10 + mod of x. Usually only the DM cares about the DC of these rolls so the player is just told "Make an athletics check. The DC to grapple the kraken is 23." Or "the alligator tries to grapple you, what is your athletics?" "+3" "okay he needs to beat DC 13." Roll happens. The passive stat never needs to be on the character sheet. (Passive...

I agree. They should have gone that route. The best explanation that I can think of is that they tried that, then someone looked at a character sheet that had a whole long list of calculated passive skill values, and thought it looked too intimidating. It doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, but in terms of appearance, it looks like it adds more complexity than it really does.

I'd probably just make a rule that allows full-casters (all of the Arcane ones; but not 'part time' ones, like the Eldritch Knight, or Divine ones like Cleric or Druid) to substitute 1 Spell Level regained for 5hp of "HD resting". Casters generally don't have quite as many HP's as others, so that makes it a trade-off. Making it 5hp also means it pretty much relegates it's use to very...

The dice are an illusion. They only impact the game in as far as they determine the result of an action, and both types of action only have two possible results. Rule simplicity is also a factor, because they want the game to be easy to learn. Grapple checks are one of those weird exceptions to the normal flow of combat which is not supposed to ever really come up. They need a rule for it,...

Once you do that you have complete freedom to invent arbitrary mechanics, and I'd not advise using PC stats for anything except PCs in 4e anyway. The idea of NPC allies that are built like a PC is just not something that is worthwhile as a concept in 4e. However, if you were building a PC with their concept being basically "pretty...
