So can I take that as meaning you're game to work on a conversion? I can see a fair few synchronicities with what I was thinking about for their stats in there, but I'm more inclined to build them from scratch.

Well, maybe this could help kick start things? I did not write this up. I believe I pulled this from an old WotC conversion thread back in the 3.5 days. I only have the mechanical effects and this was sort of my cliff notes version that I used years ago when I ran some of these guys in an encounter. I don't know how accurate this draft is, but here you go... Reave Medium Monstrous Humanoid ...

I suspect some of the problem with traits being underused has to do with the fact that some are just much weaker than others, mechanically speaking. I rated the different traits in a previous thread: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?655070-WOIN-Trait-Tier-List In our game together we have one character who does Ambidextrous shooting to good effect, and one who does lots of Reckless...

There isn't really such thing as a 'main tank' in D&D, that's a concept from MMOs with aggro mechanics that force enemies to act in a really dumb way. Define exactly what it is that you expect a main tank to do, and you'll probably do it better by taking more cleric than more fighter. If you want to wade in with a high AC, you've already got that. If you want to hurt enemies enough to make them...

Morrus's answer is entirely correct. I will also note that the sort of hack you describe is quite common in gaming communities, legally dubious or not. For example, you might see someone hack the Mouse Guard RPG as a system for running 'Star Trek' or 'Harry Potter', and say, "Look, what do you think of this a write up for the TOS bridge staff?" Whether you'd get a cease and desist over...

Honestly? This probably won't be a popular opinion... As a GM, they would not be allowed to do that. They would have to give some sort of speech, however stuttering and bad, and then roll the dice. The reason is that though the dice may govern how the speech is received, the content of the speech matters. If the character has 'Oratory +100' it may be the speech will be received as the...

Sounds simple enough. After all there's two ways to disable a ship: Shoot the :):):):) out of it, or disable the crew. Make the ships the map, but don't forget to give them AC and HP like other objects. That way players can choose to board the opposition's ship, shoot the opposition's crew, or just shoot the other ship, be it with cannon or spell.

You could try making the actual ship battle a narrative background element while the PCs themselves do something important in the battle. Maybe they have to board the enemy ship and get something while the cannonballs rain down and enemy sailors battle them in the lower decks.

Yes, the horror days of the dumb fighter, because it was the only class to which you qualified. That said, things did get fleshed out over time. From Elf as warrior mage "Class" and Dwarf as class to multi and dual classing, then actual warrior mage classes. It reminds me of the catch 22 of job descriptions: the job is listed as entry level, yet it wants you to have X years of experience. I...

I totally agree that guns can be a bit out of place in most D&D settings. That is partly the draw for me: artificers SHOULD often be a bit whacky and crazy. If I get to decide they are the "crazy scientist" type of character, and not really fitting in is part of the identity for any variety with a gun, automatic crossbow or robotic enhancements. The subclasses suitable for Eberron (and the base...

I switched to Savage Worlds because of the Savage Rifts kickstarter and now i'm writing both a fantasy and a sci-fi setting to SW in my spare time for my next campaigns. I'll get SWADE before my next campaign, but for now I'm happy with the Explorers edition. FYI, i'm old so I've been playing D&D in all its incarnations since the red box as well as dozens of other games, so this is not unusual...

That's not a bad warlord style class. I still prefer KibblesTasty's version on Reddit, but this one is pretty good. Better than the Robert Schwalb one from a few weeks ago, anyway.

Interesting title for today's episode, and I'm not sure how much to read into it. Taken from a classic science fiction short story, the prototypical crushing-a-butterfly story about the repercussions of changing the past, and it opened with images of butterfly-like creatures flitting between flowers, yet for all the talk about the Red Angel's potential time-travel capabilities there was no...

So, in fairness, there was a lot of stumbling in the dark early on. It was the beginning. Which is why a lot of the old rules don't necessarily make sense for more modern games. Not just mechanical restrictions on roleplaying, but all sorts of things; an easy example I think of is the gatekeeping function for classes. One of the fundamental flaws in 1e (which just got out of control in...

We've had some success trying out Captains and Cannons from the DMs Guild. It has some nice mechanics that incorporate environmental effects and combine character and ship actions during the course of combat to make it more than just "fire at will". Additional action types allow non-ranged PCs to contribute to encounters in a meaningful way. There are also a few interesting mini-adventures...
