My ruling would be that the creature feels compelled to perform the terms of the geas, but initially justifies it in some way appropriate to its personality. Perhaps if the caster who charmed the creature is known or emotionally significant to the creature, the creature has something depicting the caster in its residence (e.g. a statue of painting or locket), while it the caster is unknown maybe...

Most of us here did the math four years ago. So, no, you won't be hearing from the math-aware that this can't be true. 2d6 reroll 1s and 2s give four possible results that grant rerolls. If you do the same for 1d10 or 1d12 weapons (that is, reroll on a 1-4), the damage boost is similar. The boost for 2d6 rerolling is 1.33 so a boost of 1.2 (for 1d10 reroll 1-4) or 1.33 (for 1d12) is right in...

Hmm… I'd reword it slightly and add at least a few lines of background. How about: Astral figments are semi-illusory beings created when an amazingly rare combination of magical forces interacts with a lunatic mind. Despite being at least partially formed from mental energy they are unrelated to the psionic entities known as astral constructs. An astral figment looks like a "solid shadow"...

Yep, by no means were the lists I provided exhaustive. If foes start taking OA's then melee greatly increases the amount of damage they are dealing. Thus melee is now doing significantly more damage than their ranged allies in this scenario. Ranged can always focus fire at least till a melee gets up to them. Then they typically start having to take an OA to do so after that which...

I posted these in the other threa: Dodge can be a more attractive option than disengage - if you disengage you avoid AOOs but are hit normally next round, if you dodge then move away you take any AOOs at disadvantage, but also give enemies disadvantage through your next turn. If you think enemies might follow you or hit you at range, dodge can be your better option. Dodge is also great if...

I would disagree on this point. An important factor that you seem to have overlooked is that taking the Dodge action can cause enemies to re-evaluate who they attack. If nobody attacks you, your Dodge action was only wasted if their decision to not attack you was made without regard to your Dodge action. If your choice to Dodge causes them to not attack you, then your action had the effect of...

I haven't read those old Epics in a long, long time and I know Cúchulainn isn't the best example because he was forced to choose between conflicting Taboos, but Wikipedia states that traditionally a Geas...

Advantage is a flat +5 -5 for passive scores iirc... for other cases its effect varies. For example... Say i need a 16+ roll of the die to succeed. that is a 25% chance of success - about 5 times in 20 average. With advantage - that goes to 43.25% chance of success - about 8-9 in 20 average. Good improvement but not the 50% a flat +5 would have given. With disadvantage - that goes to...

Consider also the number of times you might be attacked (that's a lot of zombies). So, let's assume that I (only) mitigate 15% damage from the horde of zombies that's cornered me here with the original example. That's still pretty attractive. What if I have a high AC and am already severely wounded? What if they need a 20 to hit? What if I'm already severely wounded? Your odds of rolling a 20...

I would have to see your changes to the other styles first, but my immediate impulse would be to take this style and keep the full bonus to AC at all times (until such point as I hit the cap, and then the extra bonus is wasted as damage). The ability to use a greatsword, while still gaining +2 to AC (later improving to +3), blows the shield and defense style out of the water. Of course, I...

Fighters with the Great Weapon Fighting style are supposed to use greatswords rather than greataxes. It gives a greater bonus with the former than with the latter. LOL so Fighters aren't supposed to use shields? And that analysis includes those weapons, the greataxe doing a d12 and even the 2d6 for greatswords and mauls only raise the expected average 1.33 points. Hardly impressive for a Fighting Style, which the character only gets one of unless they multiclass or go Champion. So, basically, I don't get your point. ;)

I'd describe him as an enchanter specialist in 2e terms since they had a bonus to learn enchantment spells and penalties to learn any others that weren't prohibited. I'd probably give him...

Nightbeat84 - comments in your last 2 posts sound good. One other suggestion is to beef up "100. Re-roll". Perhaps roll twice more on the table?

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc manservant. I gave her no end of crap, making Quij take trapfinding detail, ordering him into danger first, etc....

Interesting. If we go by how you describe RAI, you can temporarily ‘cure’ someone affected by Geas with modify memory.

Of course feats are more powerful than fighting styles. Fighting styles only effect, well, fighting. + to AC/+ to ranged hit/+ to melee dam/whatever two wpn fighting does.... Feats? Sure, you've got your awesome GWM, SS, Pole arm master etc. But you've also got all kinds of other stuff that can give your character/fighter abilities not reliant upon hitting/shooting things. Things that can...

Harb handed his bow and arrows off to somebody else to carry. Then he lifted the hood of his cloak over his face and proceeded at a bit of a hobble, leaning on his staff and doing his best to seem frail and unthreatening. Not sure if Harb has the best Persuasion or not. Only a +2 bonus. Deception to hide his potential for violence:

Vadin, taken a bit aback by the request to lay down his weapons, gives a slight huff. When he hears Bolo's comment to the guards he begins to laugh, stopping himself before he does. He looks at Merin, and Tor as they surrender their weapons and agrees that giving into the command is the best course of action. He turns over his sword and knives to the guards saying, "As my friend here said,...

So Im starting to put this together as a high level planar campaign merging Dead Gods with Savage tide stuff. Starting at level 10 Strahd is on Faerun up to his own stuff aparently, but the party starts to notice Ravenloft like happenings and suspects him. They investigate and discover that Demogorgon is using Strahd to try to turn Faurun into an abyssal layer (Thanks Dausuul). In order...

I think there’s a fine line between RP-focused bickering between characters, and what amounts to in-game bullying. At a con a while back, my cowardly tiefling and a valorous cleric, as you might imagine, didn’t see eye-to-eye. We needled each other throughout the game (though outside of the in-character RP, we worked together). During a break in the game, we talked to make sure neither of us was...

It's not that the +1 to AC while dual-wielding is a negligible benefit for a dual-wielder. It's that dual-wielding is not relevant to tanks, who use shields. There are dozens of formulas and features for calculating AC, but if you care about AC as your main thing, then you've already disregarded dual-wielding and archery as possibilities. A +1 bonus to AC for a dual-wielder is worth less than...

Which is a personal choice. I try not to do it myself I when I run a game. So back to my point, which is on topic: I was simply saying that dodging will vary depending on how the DM uses ooc knowledge and how true to character they play the opposition. I’m not sure how it came across as frustration but that happens with text.

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are disobeying the caster. Their very disobedience is what triggers the spell - reinforced by the fact...

Did you follow the link? It explains how ADV/DIS actually work. A roll of 11+ changes in probability by 0.25%, a roll of 20 changes by 4.75% This post actually shows the maths. There are hundreds of google results showing the same thing.

Dandin grins suddenly and laughs at the startled greenskins. "Gotcha! Come and get me, if you dare, 'general'!" And then he ran back into the hallway laughing. Viscious Mockery vs the general, then move action into the hallway as far as possible on 25 ft. Reaction of cutting words readied to interfere with any attacks that seem on the verge of missing.

Let's see. Each of these characters was from games that lasted 3-4 sessions, even though they were all run by different GMs. First, there was the crocodile demon (from an Egyptian-flavored pantheon) exiled to Earth in the Buffyverse campaign. She had a tragic backstory that never got to be used. Then, for D&D, I had a monk in a game inspired by Shadow of the Colossus. Her village was...

You don't get to have it both ways. If you're going to count +2 to ranged attacks only as +2 to every attack you'll ever make because your preferred style is ranged, then it's only reasonable to treat +1 to AC when dual wielding as +1 AC all the time when your preferred style is dual wielding. You don't get the +2 when dealing nonlethal damage, if conditions make ranged attacks impossible, if you...

No, because it only applies when you're dual-wielding, which means you're still at a net penalty compared to using a shield. The feat helps you overcome part of the AC penalty from dual-wielding, but it's not good for characters who care about optimizing AC, which is where the fighting style really matters. Now you're into the realm of trade-offs, rather than benefits. Increasing your max HP...

Now now Taran, you started this tangent by noting frustration with DMs who ignore dodging and spells like sanctuary. Overlord is basically saying turnaround is fair play, that as much as DMs may use in game knowledge to make their monsters more tactical, players can do it too.

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1) I would create a PC, (2) he would get tired of the PC he was playing and retire them, and (3) a new PC...
